Resident Evil 4 HD Project - Progress Thread

Yup. The problem is that that tombstone is repeated throughout the graveyard about 3-4 times, and used in a strange, slightly stretched manner on the other tombs right next to the church. So it would be as if a string of Sarah Ann Elizabeths, all married to George Lamberts, died and were buried in the area. :) I went with somewhat difficult to discern Latin text because it looked good in all locations and didn't scream out to the player, "Look at the repeated texture!"

Also, it's now possible to edit environmental 3D models (all credit goes to Son of Persia (user from “Resident Evil Modding Forum”) who developed the needed tools to edit 3D environmental models). We're using this to address only errors / glaring issues. Some examples:

Note - the face is a WIP and doesn't look right. Just showing what's possible - it will be improved.

Whoa whoa whoa -- does that mean it's at least possible to add tessellation to some geometry now? Or is tessellation only every done on the fly by the GPU? Total programming noob here.

Looking forward to the day this releases and Resident Evil 4 HD becomes the #1 selling game on Steam.

Fantastic work guys!

They found the door.

So awesome.

They found the original texture for Leon's hair, I don't doubt they could find everything. Probably got the model numbers for the Separate Ways shipyard

did Capcom create no textures of their own for this game?
I find it quite amazing that so many of RE4's textures are either photographs of existing locations or textures freely available online.

It's not like this is a minor title from a small publisher..

Well I would think that for most games that take place in real world type environments, the textures are largely photographs and stock stuff.

If true, that would probably explain at least part of why this industry seems to love realism as a visual style. It seems to be very cost effective from a content creation point of view.

The in-progress screenshots continue to impress. I don't think I've ever seen a better, more faithful texture replacement mod.

BTW, is it possible to get the PC version of the latest RE4 release to display a clean image? Even though the game plays on a 16:9 monitor with no black bars, the geometry/image is slightly blurry. Probably has something to do with the way the game was originally programmed, with a forced 16:9 even on the 4:3 televisions that were so common at the time.

I'm doing a poor job of explaining the issue. But the image is definitely blurry, especially when compared to the first PC port. I didn't mind since it was great to have the Gamecube lighting effects. The low resolution textures hid the problem too. ..but with this mod in the works, I'd like to know if there's a way to correct the issue.

This is an absolutely, completely fantastic texture pack, congrats!

It's so great to see a texture pack where the modders actually understand the original artists intentions and have the skills to back up the creation of the textures.

And it's especially great to see such a fantastic texture pack for one of my all time favourite games!

This is gunna be like playing the game for the first time again :)

That's so dismissive. I acknowledge I'm ignorant, I don't think it's unreasonable to wonder about that. If you know why, will you inform me? I'm trying to learn.

I have a basic understanding, but not an advanced one and that's why I can't give you a full explanation as to exactly why it won't happen but from my basic understanding it would require reprogramming the game to accept, understand, and utilize a technology that it wasn't designed to accept, understand, or utilize. On top of that, it would require modders to create displacement maps for all of these tesselated things which would be even more time consuming than the current mod already is

Downsample.

My understanding is that when you play it in 16:9, it just zooms to crop out the black bars.

So it's rendering at whatever resolution you give it, and then zooming in.

to combat that, you can render at a higher resolution, like 3840x2160, then the flow will basically be something like

3840x2160 render -> slight zoom in -> shrink down to 1920x1080.

It should stay pretty sharp that way

Tessellation is done real time in other games, and I'm pretty sure that's practically impossible to do in this case. Maybe it's technically possible by injecting code, but major code changes is extremely challenging without access to source code.

Anyway, models can be replaced, so that means higher poly count models can be imported into the game. I think there is a hard poly count limit on models in the game engine (this limit wasn't actually in the original PC port), but still, they can look a lot better than what they do now. I think UV mapping errors can be fixed that way too.

Mind blowing work as usual.

At what percentage are you guys at? Resident Evil 4 is a massive game, and it seems like you're being very meticulous.

After this is done, I'd love to read a postmortem. Things you've learned, things you hated, things you appreciate even more, etc.

A big update from Albert has just gone up. Here are 6 comparison shots. The site has 8 more and a video (re4hd.com)

He's doing some excellent work!

Totally agreed! I'm certain we'll do that.

Oh man. Truly inspiring work you guys have done here. Only now I see how beatiful the spanish-y artwork in the game is. The quality is outstanding and the loyalty to the original style impeccable.

This has seriously gotten to the point that I'm more impressed than I've ever been, but can't think of any more words to explain how amazed I am.

Anything being done to the character models? Maybe a bit jarring to have SD characters in HD environments.

Modding community on PC is as glorious as ever.

AFAIK the textures on the models are being redone as well, here's one of first updates they posted.

Leon's jacket was one of the first updates too

Everything looks really great and I'm holding back my playthrough until this project is done.

Textures yes. Models themselves no. But the models aren't jarringly bad or anything so it's fine.

That's awesome.O_o

Truly exceptional work, as always!

This image I found particularly interesting:

It looks like the underlying geometry for the chain texture was reoriented. Is that correct?
and if so, was it done using the same method used to fix seams in other models?
