Resident Evil 4 Review thread

I'm sold. Game is solid. I've watched about 5 video reviews so far. Interesting how there's almost no mention of the lack of Mercenaries mode (although Capcom have teased it in previous trailers, so perhaps post launch DLC?) and puzzle complexity. I also wonder if Capcom will release the Ada missions as post release DLC?
They have teased Mercenaries in the trailers? Don’t recall seeing that, but if so great to hear. It’d be a shame with all the combat improvements not to have a Mercenaries mode.

I am sure the game will be a huge hit with great production values. That said, turning my favorite side character (Luis) into comic relief is enough reason for me to avoid it altogether.

P.S. Mercenaries was revealed at the end of the last trailer as free dlc. However, it will released at a later date.

The levels are a lot more readable and clear in the original version of part 4. It becomes a lot more obvious that your main defense in the village section is environmental interaction points. In the new one, I'm not surprised if new players just can't see most of it in the dark with hyper detail textures and it not being clear what you can interact with. The original is crystal clear.
  • Hop over fences.
  • Hop into or out of windows.
  • Shoot the lamp on the ceiling in the barn.
  • Barricade doors with furniture like a zombie movie.
I'd bet money that new players didn't catch half of it.
I didn’t

But how are we to know that?
You’re saying we (the player) have to do a specific thing (go in barn and shoot the chandelier etc) to beat that section?

I don’t like that in an action game: “you MUST do A and B to win”
Because then it becomes a memory game

What I like is:
For example (please don’t get mad, people), in The Last of Us (1 or 2), when you encounter a boss OR environment filled with infected or human antagonists, you can beat them how YOU want. Sneak around, Run and gun, melee, bombs, Molotavs etc in other words, whatever your game playing strengths are, you can pass a section.

Are you saying there’s no other way to beat that section unless I shoot that particular chandelier?!

The game is likely releasing across all time zones at the same time. There is enough disparity for it to release on one day on one side of the world and on another day on the other side.

No lol. It's just optional things you can interact with. You can skip it all.

I'm just saying that in the original game, the graphics make it so much clearer that it's immediately obvious that you can use that to your advantage, as much as it's immediately obvious that you can jump on a platform as Mario. My argument is that modern day hyper-detailed graphics obscure some gameplay elements.

Dial it back on the insults and antagonization.
There's nothing to refute when one's opinion does not follow the basic rules of reason. When you claim that the game looks like garbage, there's no debate to be had. You've already lost due to hyperbolic statements which make you look insincere or flat out ignorant.

It was the same crap with the Demon's Souls remake where people claimed it looked worse than the original.

Might as well posted you believe that pigs can fly.
It's a bad remake and visually it's nothing special. Sorry the truth hurts you :messenger_winking:

What can they refute? The reviews are pretty great, but you automatically say they must be paid shills.
They can refute specific points I've made. But no, that'd require having a criteria beyond "reviewers say it's good".

And yes, 99% of early reviewers in this industry are shills. Like this is not a known thing.

They’re not wrong. You just decided the game was trash a long time ago. Definitely welcome to think so. But this essay writing and thinking that all great reviews are paid is beyond embarrassing. The fact that you’re even doubling down on it in here borders on odd behaviour.
So just like I said before: "if you don't agree with shills you're wrong" :messenger_tears_of_joy:

You’re still going on about game reviewers being paid shills? I think you’re at the wrong place, /v/ is over there. I gave you examples yesterday of hyped up AAA games that didn’t review well, but you’d rather continue looking like the class clown on here. For what? For a video game which for some reason you have some stake in seeing it fail?
The opposite, you gave me examples of games that did way better than they'd objectively get, specially with the case of NMS. You really played yourself there.

It ain’t gonna fail. It’s critically acclaimed, most people who played the demo are excited, and it’s guaranteed to sell incredibly well. So now you’re trying to rain on people’s excitement, because that’s all you’ve got left. A grown ass man acting like a troll on a video game forum.

You’re so cool dude.
Oh look a meltdown, all because one person doesn't think this game is the second coming of Christ :messenger_tears_of_joy:

What’s the point in refuting your points if you’ve already made up your mind? That was their point, which was very clearly right based on this ridiculous response. You’re just proving them correct by continuously dismissing everything anyone is saying in favour of this game. So, to you, users can’t possibly like this game and reviewers were paid off.

It’s fun that you call someone out for whining when you’ve been whining about this remake for countless posts. You’re the personification of the no fun allowed meme in these threads, and it’s hilarious to see you clutching at whatever you can to save face.

The original is my favourite game of all time. It was on the precipice of the bullshit that is prevalent today- dlc, updates ect… the game you purchased had everything on the 2 discs and it worked perfectly fine cause it was released FINISHED!
To say I’m excited about this remake is an understatement. I’m beyond excited after all the positive reviews and have already organised my time off for this Friday to play this beast all day!

I think all the RE games are brilliant in their own way, depends on the flavour you like
RE4 is goofy and thats great

I played the demo and it looks, sounds and plays ten times better then the original. So the purpose of the remake has been fulfilled. It is the superior version. Calling it garbage is basically like saying the original is ten times worse than garbage. So yeah, you're playing yourself.

Take ten casual as well as ten hardcore gamers who NEVER played the original (so there is no nostalgia factor at play), and have them play both versions. I am pretty sure that the vast majority will agree that the remake is the better game - the version that looks better, sounds better, plays better, and overall FEELS better.

Feel free to LIKE the original better than the remake, because the original when you played it had you experience emotions that are strong even to this day. I love the original RE1 on the PSX more than any other RE game due to the emotions and the rollercoaster experience I had back then. But in no way shape or form do I think it's the BEST RE game. It's my FAVORITE, but it's not the best.

The original RE4 is not better than the remake. Its controls are dated, its visuals are dated, the gameplay is dated. Which is natural, because it's a 20 year old game. There's no shame in being surpassed by games who build upon the formula the original RE4 was a pioneer in.

If RE4 was your favorite you'd know the changes made are for the worse. Generic modern additions like parrying, item durability, stealth, one hit takedowns, etc... A generic shooter is what this is.

You still have your beloved original at your disposal.

No need to keep shitting on a game you clearly have decided is not for you. Simply don't play it. Problem solved :D

Madflavor Madflavor my suggestion is stop bothering with someone like O OCASM . He seems to have personal hate against RE4R for some weird reason.

If he wants to troll against the game, let him, me and you and majority of people going enjoy the crap out this game, so who cares?
Oh I know. I think my last post showing him sloppily contradicting himself closed the book on that whole clown show.

Okay so, it's obvious this is a tribute to the 'turning head' zombie from RE1. But ... that shot wasn't in the demo. Did they scrap it? Or will it be shown somewhere else? Or is it simply off-camera as Leon looks at the wallet?

I think it's just your average standard marketing shot taken via photo mode or some other means that isn't in the actual games cut-scenes.

Some folks here are really attached to metacritic score.

You gonna miss a lot of good games with that obsession of posting metascore pictures.

Is a behavior of fanboys I quite dislike. They not only keep posting Metacritic screenshots, but also edit the pictures to hide the user score.
They need metacritic to validate their interests because they are insecure

I've never played this and after the absolute stellar VR Resi8 as soon as they patch in VR mode its an insta buy for me

It might also be in the full game. In the demo they cut the scene with Leon in the car with his two escorts, and him getting out of the car. Guess we'll know in a few days.

Asked the same, nobody gave an answer
Any ps5 impressions? Same as demo ?

My understanding is that the full game looks and plays similar to the demo version. PC plays and looks great. For consoles you gotta pick your poison. PS5 controls fine but has issues with the image quality, particularly with how it looks a bit blurry in some places. With the Xbox it's the insane deadzone issue on the controller.

The game still reviewed outstanding, so my guess is that either the reviewers eventually got used to them, or they simply didn't notice or care enough to let it bother them.

I don't do it often, but I preordered the special edition on Steam. I want the damn Samurai Edge and the cases. If anyone is deserving, it's the RE team.

My problem is that the Ganado when Leon enters gives you the impression you're seeing him for the first time? I mean, you could be right, and we could be seeing this when the cop enters the building to do what he wanted to do and the Ganado is alerted to his presence (the remake equivalent of his shadow looking at Leon from the window in the original).

Hope they will release a patch for the ps5 version.

I tried the demo again last night. Still can't get past the image quality in Ps5. Dof, chromatic aberration, lens distortion, rt all turned off. Looks good indoors but as soon as you're outdoors the image takes a nosedive. Looks like 1080p-1200p native. Nope can't do it I'm tired of spending $70 on disappointing next gen visuals.

That sucks - hopefully it's fixed in the retail version. Steam version runs beautifully and I'm very happy with that.

I've made my peace with the deadzones in the demo. Playing both back to back, the IQ difference is noticeable even on a 32 inch monitor.

Hopefully the prophesied day 1 patch has improvements for both consoles.

I've seen somewhere hat previous RE games have the same bad deadzone on xbox so I wouldn't get hope up.
PS5 is softer but with lens distortion disabled, it's bit better.
Remember. You play the game at the end and dualsense offers a better experience
