Resident Evil 7 Spoiler Thread

Anyone know when chronologically the conversation between 'normal' Jack, Zoe and Ethan happens in the flashback? Couldn't figure out where that was supposed to happen, or was it an Evelyn hallucination?
It's the latter, it's just their consciousnesses talking to him. Jack has gone crazy by the time Ethan shows up.

Oh, thanks guys. That was not entirely clear to me.

Loved the game, but the story was very straightforward. I liked grandma being Evelyn all along. I thought gameplay was fine up until the mines, then I just wanted it over with.

Man after the small scale of 7 im obviously craving a bit of the action games atm
But weirdly I think most of all im craving a more open world-ish Outbreak type game now.

I figured the lab was built in a salt mine because salt kills mold ...but several molded seemed to have no problem coming after you in there.

It was built in a salt mine because Capcpom seriously had to wrack their brain for an abandoned industrial facility they hadn't used yet in the series.

Finally got the RE7 Platinum. What a ride.

Regarding Sheng-Ya, it's interesting that they named their black ops unit "Umbrella" Corps. Any reason why or is that still unknown?

My second half:

You choose Zoe, and then the both of you end up being shipwrecked. You wake up to see Ethan standing beside you, you're now playing from Zoe's perspective with the former protagonist following you, but he can't fight because his left-hand is gone and well he's frankly tired of this bullshit. While inside the ship, Zoe and Ethan find the tape showing Mia's relationship to Evie. You discover that infected Mia is stalking the floors, brought on deck to fuck with you. Ethan chooses to stay in the VCR room while Zoe explores. She eventually finds Ethan's hand, returning it to him, only to be ambushed by Mia, where she chases her into that one room where Mia dies in the canon storyline. Ethan kills Mia to save Zoe.

Both her and Ethan exit the ship, ending up in the shack with the communications equipment. Zoe flips a few switches, sending a signal for help. You both hear Evie calling to you, and you get the option of choosing either character to finish the last stretch, while the other one waits for Redfield to sexily save the day.

And I finally realized what Ethan's end run in the game reminded me of- Evil Dead 2, when possessed Ash remembers who he is, and becomes the protagonist of the movie again.

Brilliant! This game, as good as the first half feels like it could be, fails to live up to its potential and turns into something indistinguishable from Condemned 2, starting from the Lucas stuff and through the end of the game.

How do you all rank the areas in the game?

Overall:
1. Baker mansion (obviously)
2. Old House
3. Ship
4. Test facility
5. Guest house
7. Mines

In terms of level design I'd put the ship second though. I wish the old house were bigger, I loved it even though the bug parts were annoying AF.

About the same for me, I think I might put the Guest House at number 3 just for the atmosphere and visual element. The mines were obviously the weakest part (which is a shame, because the walk up to the entrance of the mine is actually pretty creepy).

Even though I spoiled myself with the ending, I still very much enjoyed this game. As much as it doesn't fit into the series after the action packed 5 and 6, it was very much Resident Evil at it's core and the game was just creepy as fuck.

I do wish the story was extrapolated further towards the laboratory motif near the end, a la RE:1, but now with the direction they went, I'm really curious to find out who "Redfield" really is as well as how Ethan will play into future RE games.

I REALLY want to play this in VR now.

Changed it a bit. Baker Mansion is obviously the best. Test facility would be second for me, since i'm assuming this includes the last jack fight. Which was a highlight for me. Guest House is where things start to drastically drop, since using a flamethrower to mainly just kill small bugs and nests is whack. Though thekid room section is great. Old house after that, since it's heavily scripted. Mines is boring to look at but it's not very long. Ship just drags on for way too long, and the multi level aspect isn't fun.

You have Guest House and Old House mixed up, lol. Bugs are in Old House. But I agree with the list anyway. I liked the Evil Dead prologue more, even though it's a pain in the ass to replay.

Did I miss something post credits? A phone was vibrating and I pressed X as if to answer it and it abruptly took me to the stats screen.

BTW I might be in the minority here but I actually like the final act. Outside of the VHS tape I enjoyed exploring the ship. The mines were short and linear but I loved the atmosphere (especially the exterior) the mini-lab and just the overall sense that you're approaching the end. The final boss design was great but it was a disappointing fight, it all felt scripted. Can you even die?

Evelyn wasnt a good choice though IMO. The whole hallucination/supernatural chasing a little girl has been done to death. Also I was incredibly disappointed that there was only one monster design.

I have a new rule- use unlocks when I hit Mia's section. Hey, already beat the game twice vanilla, I earned this.

The flame rounds are kinda ass. Two direct hits to kill a regular molded, although it does have the ability to damage multiple enemies.

lol, you don't even get anything for beating Ethan Must Die mode but that trophy. Capcom punishing people for nothing.

Fuck. Well at least I wrote it out anyway.

To rank locations~ (and curious how the DLC may shape my opinion in the future here), I would say there's a few more areas than people are listing here, but to give my personal order:

01.) Baker Mansion
I think this will be the top choice for most people. How it connects, intertwines, has interesting rooms, and how Jack stalks you around here is all ace. I wish it was bigger.

02.) Burnt House
This is the house that you fight long-armed Marguerite in, in a note it mentions it was burnt down by Lucas and only partially repaired. I love the boss battle here, and a big part is due to this house's design.

03.) Ship
Yuuuuup. It's grown on me. I like the different floors, various unlockable rooms, and how the Molded function here more than any other location. I think it's cool to see it as its fancy then decayed self, and I think it has a good differing more vertical layout.

04.) Old House
I like its design quite a bit, I think I almost want to place it above Ship due to Eveline's room part, but how small scale it is kind of knocks it down for me and the limitation to how Marguerite can stalk you here. Still very fun to explore.

05.) Testing Area
I wish there were more traps, but it's fun to maneuver. The Happy Birthday location elevates it for me, as well as commentary from Lucas throughout.

06.) Processing Area
I think the basement of the house should be counter as a different location, has a different map and a different feel with an obvious transition between the two. A fun basement location which does put me on edge, both the first time through and second in the dark.

07.) Yard
Hey, the yard counts too! I think the Yard worked as a great hub, trailer was visually nice, love the Lucas rave lights touch later, and how it connects to most of the main areas in the game for the first 2/3rds. Also fun to explore and find some secret about.

08.) Pier
This area's very brief, but I love the visual look of it, it has by far my favorite save room in the game, and the "Pier of the Molded" moment was nice, as well as I liked Jack's third boss fight. I thought it was a nice sub-area.

09.) Wasteland
This is the small intermission section you go between the Ship and the Mines, go through two areas of dead forests split with a little rickety shack in-between. I don't know, loved hose desolate it was and various visual touches, plus the march of the Molded before entering the mines.

10.) Guest House (Beginning Hour House)
The second visit to the hallucination house does elevate it, but not enough to put it above the others. I still like it but it's a bit small and very few things happen. It ends up being the most scripted area of the game on both occasions which I think never helped it really shined. Do have nostalgia for it thanks to the Beginning Hour demo, though.

11.) Mines
I don't hate it, but it did turn out to be my least favorite. Visually I actually like it, but I think the situational stuff is kind of just throwing Molded at you. I did enjoy the climax climb, but feel more could've been done here. I think this location may be expanded more in upcoming DLC.

The ship onward is noticeably less fun on replays. The scenery isn't really interesting compared to what came before, and the lack of new enemies doesn't help. Just returning to the shack before the salt mines is refreshing.

But I do agree that if they didn't force you to do Mia's tape again, it would improve the pacing. Besides one door you can open with corrosive (that stays unlocked... although I haven't checked if it's open regardless of what you do in the tape), none of the items carry over to "present" Mia. I tried opening the small lockers without picking up the items, and nope, they're gone later.

The great intro in the guest house is evened out by the disappointing return at the end. I also wish the progression through it was less linear. The updated demo did a better job using the space (although I get why they made it more linear for the final game). I also really dug the area right after the ship and before you go down into the mine itself. It made me pretty excited for some more creepy, atmospheric level exploration, but alas.

And it would also take up 2/3rds of your expanded inventory. And using it causes Ethan to fly back ten feet and his left arm detaching.
I very much doubt that would bother him. He had his hand chopped off and stapled back on, and had his leg chopped off and somehow just stuck it back on using a med kit. Losing an arm to a rocket launcher is child's play for Ethan.

But there's no longer a Zoe to staple his parts back on and kiss his boo-boo in a sexy rural accent

For all we know, Ethan is still infected. He used the one serum on Jack, and the other on either Mia or Zoe. Ethan wasn't cured. And I can't help but think that Redfield didn't rescue a survivor, more like he extracted a target. He can still regenerate limbs.

I always assumed the whole welcome to the family business was supposed to be indicating Ethan was infected as well, although I'm not sure why they then proceed to try and kill him repeatedly

Maybe it'll be like the movies, and Ethan ends up becoming the new Tyrant. Or him and Chris team up to go boulder-bashing. Can you imagine that, a VR game where all you do is punch boulders in coop?

Aside from the guest house intro, the locations progressively get worse for me in chronological order. Oddly enough.

The Happy Birthday stuff also becomes overly tedious on replays. They should really make all the tapes optional after you've beaten the game once.

I do hope ethan dies, Mia too. Could finally have some main character death outside of piers, and get rid of some boring characters while we're at it.

Not like capcom wants to show Ethan's face. So why should I care about him?

The ship is as high as it is for me becuase apart from the main house it has the best, most fleshed out, level design. The atmosphere is pretty good too. But visually it lacks identity for all the parts of the ship and the lack of enemy variety hurts it.

Yeah I can finally join this thread.
really good game but it had fuck all to do with Resident Evil other than....was that suppose to be Chris Redfield at the end?
Seriously the Resident Evil part was taped on last minute, this game was something else beforehand and there is no if or buts.
And I ain't gonna argue about it, it is what it is.
what I will talk about though is Imposter Chris Redfield working with Umbrella or something?

When they showed it off originally it wasn't Resident Evil, but it was by far a hugely positive response for VR, I honestly believe it was never intended as a RE game originally.

Goes against what they said not long ago about main series being action and Revelations series being for horror fans too.

They didn't say the main series was for action, they said the main series would be more experimental.

They're going to go with a huge reveal about just who Ethan is.

Just finished the Bedroom part of the DLC. It was pretty short but good. Very similar to the Happy Birthday tape where you are in a confined area and have to solve puzzles to progress. Probably would have been a good add on to the main campaign to be honest.
Onto Ethan must die and Nightmare

Probably been brought up, but at the end of the game when "ghost" Mia says "You were always watching me, why?" was she talking to Ethan or Evie? If it's the former... I could see Ethan having met and married Mia on orders.
