Resident Evil 7 Spoiler Thread

That's not based n the door, that's a random event that can happen. Happened to me in the Main Hall randomly elsewhere, he can do the "welcome to the family, son!" punch he does in the main hall (though without the dialogue), knock you to the ground, and then he'll have mysterious vanished. Happened to me once on the opposite side of the shotgun door once. Was quite confused when it happened myself, bt I think it's an event that can happen in the main hall.
This happened to me as well just before doing the shadow puzzle.

I know I'm okay with a lot of things in RE, but man... I really hope there's no clones lol

The movies already succumbed to "oh it was just a clone for the sake of plot retconning" and while the games are by no means masterfully plotted, it's not something I'm sure I want to see make it in there just short of time travel. I guess 6 did it with Carla or whatever but we can stop there kthx (and that was dumb as fuck, no coincidence right)

If you put the 'Happy Birthday' tape into the VHS player upside-down you actually see Redfield Chris (that's his name, it's backwards) being birthed. It's him in a cocoon, butt-naked, bursting free then flopping onto the ground and looking at the camera.

If you do it right the nearest phone rings. When picked up Ethan asks "Is this what you wanted to show me?", and Zoe replies "No, I thought...", then Ethan hangs up.

I. Sorry brandonh, clones are part of the RE formula, the Ashford,Sergek, the Tyrants, and now Chris.

I would be ok if he was mr Redfield's husband though.

Don't forget Carla.

Although she wasn't really a "clone," more like "extreme plastic surgery, down to the haircut, thanks to virus."

Kinda dumb you can't bypass the Birthday trap with Clancy. Considering all the hell he went through Capcom could have given him an optional ending where he lived. But then Lucas would have probably changed the passwords.

I'm okay with the cloning of monsters because... yeah, but every time they do human clones it's just not really my thing. I'm not sure Chris is a clone or even... not Chris, I'm honestly taking it at face value: that was Chris, and maybe he's working with Umbrella for more dubious reasons than Umbrella realizes.

Determination was my favorite track from the soundtrack, it reminds me of the music at the beginning of MGS disc 2 when you get into the compound after the Sniper Wolf fight.

I mean, this is obviously not the same Umbrella. Everything else though I agree with. That's obviously just Chris Redfield. Everybody actin' like RE is a Kojima series all of a sudden lol.

Well, Umbrella (from what I gather?) wants to put viral strains into unsuspecting individuals like Eveline so they can mind control people so it still sounds like the same Umbrella, unless it's a different organization that did it. Did the game even clarify that it was Umbrella that Mia was working for and that experimented on Eveline?

It's supposed to be a different organization. 'Tentsu'. But, apparently, if you read the notes they've worked with Wesker's organizaton (the 'HCF') in the past, so maybe they're an Umbrella shadow corporation.

Umbrella Vs. Tentsu.

They go to war by infecting a small town with their own unique virus and let their BOWs and mercenaries massacre each other.

And anytime there is a twist, Capcom sucks at hiding it. Jill as the hooded figure in RE5 and clone Ada in RE6.

It just seems obvious to me that Chris' dumb appearance was just to say "Look, it really was a Resident Evil game", and they probably rushed to get a face-captured model for him because he wasn't a big part of the plot.

I don't get the "the RE elements were SO OBVIOUSLY tacked on at the end" comments.

The game has mutant/infected enemies since the beginning and even the gameplay is classic RE right off the bat.

They're talking about the obvious connections to the series as a whole. Though that could be argued with the picture of the ark lay mountains, names on reports and such too.

Well, I'm talking about story-wise. "Hey look, it's a dude who was in Resident Evil 1 - these games are connected!", because outside of that moment there isn't really anything tying RE7 to the rest of the franchise narratively.

The gameplay is classic Resident Evil, but I'm sure the same could be said about some indie games - that alone doesn't make a 'Resident Evil' game. Feeling narratively connected to the rest of the games is a part feeling like Resident Evil.

They shoulda just relicensed Jill's face model if they wanted to shift to the photogrammetry thing and made her the cameo. It would have been instantly more recognizable without having to say her name. Instead we get Chris going "please clap."

This made me laugh out loud. It really was that.

See to me, that's a huge positive. I don't want the games to always involve the same characters being involved over and over. I'm totally ok with brand new characters, doing new things. I'm completely over Chris and Leon by now. I mean Leon went from a rookie cop to a US agent who got caught up with another biohazard in South America, then in Spain, then at a airport, then in some Slavic country, then in another small town like when he was a cop and later in China. And guess what? Him and Chris will be fighting zombies again soon!

Having Leon YET again, or Chris or Jill doing the same thing they've been doing for 20 years just wouldn't cut it for me. I much prefer RE7's story to that. Smaller scale, more intimate, new characters, and some light connections to the main lore with potential to get biggerr later (Umbrella's return). This to me, was more important to the series since it brought something new and fresh, than the same ol, same ol' that the classic characters would have brought.

I generally agree. I love RE7's choice of protagonist. He's the partner of someone involved in the bioterrorism world, and gets caught up in it - it's a cool premise, and a good way to justify a bystander getting caught up in Resident Evil nonsense despite the amount of counter bioterrorism organizations that exist in the RE universe. I do think that after Resident Evil 6 it's time to retire a few of the characters, but them disappearing into the sunset would be weird, so having a classic RE character to pass the baton seems like a smart move, albeit clumsily done in RE7.

I'm with you on that. There were nods to prior games sure, but I did feel the connection was weak overall. That's not to say I needed the game to star older characters. But if you ripped out Chris at the end, and any files or pictures relating to old events. You could easily hide the fact that this was RE. Some people like that, but I don't. I know the rebuttal will be "But RE4". Which gets a pass due to the older characters and explanation of prior events before the start of the game.

That's always the benefit to having older characters in new situations. It lets a bridge be set up far easier to as a connection to the rest of the series.

Regardless RE7 tried, and I just feel it failed in that regard. Doesn't take away from the game itself, but does a bit from the universe until we see what's in store for DLC and RE8

Revelations Jill is super pretty too IMO. Different but still really attractive.

*Takes off helmet*

"I'm Kennedy. GET READY FOR RE2 REMAKE BITCHES."

*Clears throat*

"I'm glad we found you."

Dropping as many plot threads and characters from the prior games as possible was the best decision they made though

You can still have better connections, and start fresh.
I don't think too many newcomers who played RE4 went "but I have no clue about Ada and Leon, this game is ruined"

I don't entirely disagree, I'm just saying that when it's called 'Resident Evil 7' there will be a need to justify that '7'. The Chris moment reads as an almost reluctant "We've sort of left this behind, but this isn't a reboot, so here's Chris, roll credits and we're done". A little something for the fans. I do think the connections to the rest of Resident Evil could have been done in a less clumsy way.

I just mean in terms of iconic faces, REmake Jill has the most iconic face in the series that is based on a real person that they could recapture. A face people could see and instantly go, "oh shit it's that Character!"

Finished madhouse run; I thought the fatties at the end were going to make me physically ill.

A few more trophies and I'll have the plat.

Ya I really hope that's not Chris...the game felt pretty detached from the rest of the franchise up until the ship level when we start to get glimpses of an outside organization being involved.

Then the Redfield reveal was just disappointing for people who enjoy Chris's character from RE5/6.

No chance this is a prequel is it? I do remember seeing anningame file about Racoon City though but I don't remember what it said.

The reason I think that they don't do every RE game (after CV) as a direct story continuation is that they want to keep adding fresh elements to keep the IP alive as its their strongest. RE will likely never see a true "ending." I think we need to get over that happening. 6 was an ensemble piece when it came to characters, but was still missing faces like Jill, Claire, Barry, etc. It introduced new ones like Jake, and even left a thread dangling for that character, but unless they feature him in a spinoff we'll never see the bastard again.

I was fine with 7's connection to the rest of the series, but any weakness of it could be alleviated by 8-- they could easily mix Ethan or Mia (or both) in with the rest of the gang. I liked Mia and would love to see her with the older cast in a situation. It's pretty much all it would take to strengthen 7's place in the main series.

Side note, I felt like they could have used Natalia from Revelations 2 in place of Eveline though the "family" story would have been different.
