Resident Evil 7 Spoiler Thread

Man, Ethan is shady AF.

I mean it was fairly obvious with how little he acted to everything happening around him and the whole "he doesn't really love you" comment, but I just got Ending 2 and the way he just tosses his phone after watching Mia's video on it was a pretty big WTF moment.
Hey, friend!

Ethan tossing his phone out of the helicopter cracked me up. :D

I don't see this as shady at all. My interpretation is that Ethan is devastated, having lost Mia again after 3 years. His monolgue at the very end, "The only door I see.. is closed." reinforces this, IMO. Him throwing the phone is similar to the typical "protagonist bids loved one farewell one last time and throws a prized possession" trope.

He totally has an ulterior motive and is keeping a ton of secrets. Major props to Capcom for writing such interesting characters that I actually want to know more about! I'm really surprised by the many subtleties within the characters and I can't wait to learn more about them in hopefully DLC or future games. It's so refreshing to feel that way about Resident Evil again!

Oh and after seeing the ending again, I'm convinced more than ever that
IT'S NOT CHRIS! :V

He may be shady and his composure when facing the things he's facing is suspicious, but I don't think you can question his love for Mia.

Lol, I mean, why would he stick around looking after her after seeing the butchered animals and the Andre's tape etc etc etc if he doesn't love her?

I feel like I'm in high school English again except that the subtext is actually being imagined by people 💀 💀 💀

True, but given how chill he is when bad stuff happens to him he could also be like " Ehhh I guess I'm gonna die in this house. Might as well talk to her to find out why she brought me over here just to die."

Hi Goonie! : )

Yeah, you're probably right. It did come across as a little odd though, but it probably wasn't intentional. It kinda felt like Ethan was like, "Whelp, Mia's dead. Oh well, I tried....hey guys, what's for dinner?"

I think Ethan does care for Mia, but I'm not 100% sure that she's his top priority. Like I said, I feel like he might have ulterior motives that won't become clear till a later game or possibly from DLC.

I'm really keen to find out more about Ethan and Mia in particular, they intrigue me quite a lot. I'll be sad if Capcom doesn't expand on them in the future.

Just finished it, is there a good writeup about the story?

Also apparently there are multiple endings? Is it decided when you have the choice to give the serum to either Zoe or Mia? We gave the serum to Mia.

Overall a pretty good game, although that Jack fight where you had to shoot his eyes was tedious as fuck, I think we did 10x at that spot :/

I finished the game this weekend. After cogitating for a bit, I'm comfortable saying this is one of the best games I've played in years, even in spite of its faults and fumbles.

It took me around 12 hours to finish, and the first 3-4 are unimpeachable. It's pure brilliance. The setting, the tone, the characters, the interactions, the moments--it's the most fun I've had with a horror property in ages.

I can't blame folks for falling off the bandwagon once it moves away from the house. Personally, I appreciated the shift in tone, and thought the ship was still a pretty good setting. What's problematic is that it's not as compelling or as interesting as the house, and there's no interactions or moments that play out as fun as before. It's just a scary, drippy old ship full of monsters--which is fine in and of itself. It's just pales in comparison to the first half.

Probably the least defensible is the salt mines, which continues the downward trajectory of interest. It's the least interesting and engaging area, and it feels like they cut it short. I was fully expecting a showdown with Lucas that never happened. Aside from a few traps, the man just ghosted from the game altogether. Not cool.

Though the brevity of the salt mines, and its focus on gunplay probably kept it from becoming a slog. I was in and out of there in no time, and kind of surprised that the "boss" fight was just a couple of fat molded.

That led to what I felt was a cool reveal with Evie being the old woman in the wheelchair. I suppose I could have figured that out had I been more perceptive, but it was a satisfying moment, and had me thinking about all those times I'd be wandering around the house and just suddenly see her in a hallway or room.

The final boss fight was, I don't know, maybe "clumsy" is the best word? I know they wanted the Hollywood blockbuster ending, but it barely felt like I had any control aside from hammering the R2 button. And the old "wait for the super weapon to finish the boss" is pretty tired. I get the impression the last third was basically autopilot to get the game out on time.

DLC? I bit. Nightmare mode is pretty fun, and about as close as we have to Mercenaries for now. There's a good mix of strategy and gunplay to warrant multiple playthroughs.

I haven't really checked out Ethan Must Die. I don't draw much enjoyment from modes that sell themselves as uber-punishing.

I thought Bedroom was the most enjoyable, but it's kind of a one-and-done. The Misery-esque scenario was a brilliant setup, and I hope the forthcoming DLC continues the trend of taking the core game and focusing on different aspects.

What part are you working on? EMD can be really frustrating, but it's really just a 15-20 minute long puzzle with just one or two execution-based elements, and RNG.

Margie at the moment. Can pretty consistently get up to that point but I will fuck myself up with bomb boxes because apparently I can't hear properly. Current strategy for Margie is to avoid the initial grab, unload one weapon on her, run upstairs into the room with turret, blow up the bomb near there and then just sit and wait for Margie to come there and keep shooting while hoping the turret notices her.

This mode is just so stupid. Like everything being OHK without single checkpoint or save point is just nuts. There is no reason why this wouldn't have 1-3 points where you could save or have a checkpoint. Or just have lower damage output if no checkpoints.

One thing I'd recommend off the bat is to not blow of the tripmine there. Marg can hit it, and if you're tucked away in there it doesn't hurt you (least, it didn't hurt me, though I was blocking in preparation).

Honestly if you're making it to Marg consistently, then it's just a matter of time before you get it. Good RNG will set you on an easy path to a win (you won't even have to drop down and use the second turret after the first runs out of ammo with enough bullets in her).

What's interesting about the salt mines is that you can run through it in 10 minutes. It's a very small portion of the game. I think the salt mines would have been better if it was more open and allowed for backtracking to the house for more puzzle solving. Might have helped with the pacing of the game keeping it steady instead of speeding up too much.

Maybe I could try to save it.

I am just so tired of everything up to the living room area. Everything up to that point goes on autopilot without any effort. This just isn't really all that fun after you have done it multiple times. And boxes having bombs is really starting to tick me off. Atleast make the sound audible enough so that I don't have to crank volume up to 100 everytime I see a box just to make sure.

I hear you man, it's aggravating. As soon as I get the flamethrower, or pistol/machine gun, I don't even bother listening I just shoot boxes. As long as you can come into the Marg fight with plenty of shotgun shells / flamethrower with 200, you're good, so pistol ammo / machine gun ammo, I only save enough in case I need to pop a box open here and there.

The first area is a drag though, but you can always skip some optional places if you're feeling like other areas can net you better stuff. I occasionally skip the left path when you get downstairs, and to speed up things on the second floor I don't wait for machine guns to empty their ammo -- just run past/block if necessary. Depending on your RNG, you can tank some hits here and there with block no problem if you're packing plenty of health items.

Look on the bright side though, I think most people will end up spending a majority of their time on the early area and give up. If you can do that stuff in your sleep at this point, it really is just a matter of the game handing you great items and you'll get it. (And trust me, when you finish it, like anything hard, you'll get that sense of satisfaction that just can't be beat)

Thing is I don't get almost any ammo in any playthrough. I use shotgun once before Marg and I usually end up with 2 shots in the barrel and 4 in inventory if I am lucky. I try to prioritize ammo always so that I throw other stuff away to get room for them.

Yeah, that's the part of things that just comes down to RNG. On one play-through I had 20 shotgun rounds somehow (and I lost this run, lol). Another time had nearly 400 flamethrower. And a majority of this ammo came near the end of the run. It's all luck of the draw. That said in all runs I've made it to Marg, I've had enough to finish her -- just died from stupid stuff.

Hell, I could be convinced you could technically kill her in that fight without firing a shot. There are so many explosives everywhere she can be baited into.

I get the feeling they were pressed up against the release deadline. Unless the intent was to make it feel as if events were accelerating faster as you got closer to the end, they could have fleshed out that area much much more.

EMD done. NEVER. AGAIN. Wasn't expecting to finish it due to having only shotgun with two shells at generator room. Also noticed that bomb boxes have one tape and item boxes have two. Holy shit did that knowledge make it much easier to decide what boxes to open.

Edit. Watched this run again and I used way too many bullets in that living room section. Oh well still finished it so doesn't matter.

Yeah it has bunch of stuff you could lure her into. That would take lot of time to figure out to though so not sure if worth it lol.

Just finished the game and had to watch what the other ending was like since Ending 2 apparently was a rare trophy. According to IGN I was a freak who chose to save Zoe instead of Mia. For me it was a no-brainer. Mia said in the video mail that I should stay the fuck away. But then she didn't remember. She also tried to kill me several times so I just though, "fuck, at least Zoe helped me a great deal up till this point".

My former wifu as I see it, was long gone when I came to Baker house. I've read minimally on the first video tape DLC, but is it anything that add to the overall experience, or is it a arcade which I can gladly skip. I'm more fan of the story, and not that eager to "hide'n gun."

Also: My aiming in this game really sucks, and the molded's movement was the only stressful thing about them. A tad bit disappointed with the enemy variation.

I think that's Chris at the end, but it wouldn't surprise me if "Redfield" was just a random Umbrella Corps dude with a Chris mask.

I hope Jake comes back soon

Characters that haven't come back and how much do I want them to return? Let's see.

Rebecca: She's coming back in Vendetta
Billy: Meh, his story is done
Carlos: Meh
Ashley: No. Fuck Ashley
Sheva: Yes please
Doug: Fuck yes
Jake: Yes
Helena: Meh

And I'd really, REALLY like a RE game where you play as Hunnigan. Maybe her workplace is attacked or something. She's not really a fighter so it'd be interesting.

It literally makes no sense why Mia wakes up from the wreckage after you chose to save Zoe. It's nonsensical and I can't imagine how confusing it would be to someone who chose Zoe on their first play.

i made that choice >.> my gf and i were confused as hell, i immediately felt ripped off and knew i did what they didn't mean me to.

best opening sequence of a game ever though, i hope some of the dlc is as fast and ferocious.

Lost like 30 minutes of progress in madhouse because I foolishly decided to postpone saving because I thought I'd be in the clear at the point I was in the old house and then died because of a devious encounter they added on this difficulty.

So good.

Got the platinum yesterday. It's funny cause I didn't like it much at all at first and now it might one of my all-time favorites.

I love the little things about it: the humor, how it wears its influences on its sleeve.
As a huge, life-long fan of films like Texas Chainsaw and Evil Dead, there was some shit that really made me laugh. I just wish the second half could have been as strong as the first, and Mia magically ending up at the ship if you cure Zoe is really dumb.

Why would Ethan be surprised by the molded and the Mega Bakers? Giant ogre monsters are fighting wars in Europe. China's still reeling from the grasshopper leg terrorists and zombie nukes and giant fly T rexes. His former president was a zombie.

Well it never crosses your mind until it actually happens to you

I hope he stays forever in limbo with all the shitty RE characters

How dare you.

All my yes. Sherry too.

This should be the real Revelations 3, and then maybe some guests they run into like sheva.

Not before Sheva, damn it. >_>

I'll be surprised if we get one or the other and not both.

As How About No said. It's all different until you're actually in it.
There's a difference between "Oh that sucks" seeing it on the news, and going "Oh fuck" if you're actually in it.

I've been stuck in the same 10 minute loop in Madhouse for a few days now* and I'm starting to lose it.

Save room > go downstairs > pick the Dissection Room key > go to Dissection Room > start Jack chainsaw boss fight

Every time I die at one point I have to start the whole process again. It only takes about 10 minutes but it's so grating. Loot from boxes is also randomized so sometimes I'll get bullets instead of a potion from the box in the morgue, so I end up getting killed faster.

I'm not sure I'm making it through Madhouse tbh.

*I usually quit after 3-5 tries.

What part are you having trouble with?

Enchanced ammo + Albert is all you need dude, makes the boss a cake walk. Buy the defense coin if you have enough antique coins, and try to juke enemies if you're low on ammo.

I have like, 2 enhanced bullets right now. The Albert hits like a truck, but 3 bullets per magazine makes missing a shot or having to reload a death sentence.

I don't have the circular saw either since I haven't done the speedrun yet, but I heard it breaks the game so it kinda takes the fun out of it. (You could argue I'm not having fun either right now but eh, dunno.)

He doesn't even look like Chris though. It could be almost anyone. I hope it's Hunk and they're pulling a fast one, but it's probably Chris.

Beat the game twice already. I didn't mind the ship section that much, but found the final boss to be disappointing.

Also would like to know more about Mia. In the end I found her more interesting the Ethan.

Are you saving after you clear out all the Molded from the basement? If not I'd do that.

Took me a few tries too :x

I unloaded all my ammo into him before picking up the chainsaw
