Resident Evil Movie - Teaser Trailer

Not Bad Real Madrid GIF

Not bad...

Call it anything other than Resident Evil and it would've caught my attention.

Then again, this is the same dude who helped give me this so I gotta watch it.

Sure, why not. Can't be any worse than the dumbass RE movies we got in the past. This sounds a lot more grounded considering who it's following. Looking forward to it!
No kidding. I think a lot of people are forgetting how bad all the previous Resident Evil movies are. Even the first "okay for what it was" one.

The first one had great ambition for something new and different by also utilizing the lore of the games but taking it in a different direction, more Umbrella-focused. Then they decided to make the next one which felt like an odd apology letter to fans of the game.

That's where they messed up. They should have stuck with the Umbrella side of things and kept Alice separate from the game characters, because around that time Umbrella was the least-explored aspect of RE.

Yeah, I agree. Honestly the second film was where it really started losing me for a lot of reasons. I didn't bother with the films that came after because they just looked like they got worse and worse IMO.

It was though. It had the same absurd ridiculous horror as all the other ones with people morphing into building size monsters, corny one-liners, etc.

The only thing that didn't feel like Resident Evil was the original trailer and reveal. When you play the game it's very Resident Evil, just in first-person.

I feel like we already saw whacky absurd looking mutants in this trailer.
a massive grey naked fat guy sitting in the sewers, and whatever is coming out of that house that seemingly uses dead bodies as hands.

I assume they don't want to spoil the monsters yet, but we already see very Resi like stuff in there.

The funny thing is a lot of RE fans somehow like that movie because Nemesis, Jill, and a cool bike/dog action scene are in it.

The movies after part 2 double down on the cheese, which is what made them fun summer blockbusters even though the narrative took a huge hit. I have a soft spot for Extinction (third movie) and Retribution (fifth movie) because of that.

Yeah, I get that, I just remember rolling my eyes at quite a bit, lmao.

They were definitely not afraid to be "fun popcorn films", which I respect, but at that point they just weren't for me anymore, haha. Clearly people still enjoyed them because they kept churning them out.

I always hoped we'd get a film that just follows the events of the first game. Hell, I'd be fine with a gritty anime or CG film even.

imo the best ones of that series from a purely filmmaking quality perspective are the first one and the third. all the others are insanely cheap looking and terribly directed.

the first movie as a standalone thing is still very decent imo.

I've played RE since I was a kid and if I didn't knew this was a RE movie I'd would have find nothing that suggested me that. At least Barbarian and Weapons were decent horror movies, so maybe the movie will not suck.

Beating diarrhea water tier movies is not really an achievement at all...
Apparently a lot of people really love or are attached to diarrhea water.

Really though, yes, anything better than diarrhea water is an achievement when people throw money at it and it continues to be "successful".

Looks RE7 inspired for sure. Maybe the guy's name isn't Ethan, but I fully expect him to be terrorized by hillbillies in this movie.

Some interesting notes from Zach Cregger and the teaser trailer.

"Resident Evil Director Zach Cregger shares some of his favorite moments from the new teaser trailer, along with behind-the-scenes insights and details you might've missed. Check out his insights below.

0:01 - We see our lead character here walking with a pistol. This is the first weapon he acquires in the movie. Just like in the games, as he progresses through the world he'll get better weapons. It's such a fun moment when you're playing RE and you finally get the shotgun or the machine gun and I wanted that sense of progression to be in the movie.

0:32 -
I wanted this movie to tell the story of what would happen if some idiot like me were dropped into the world of a RE game. So Austin plays not some badass with combat experience like Leon but just an average dude. That makes his experience of moving through this hellscape way more interesting to me than somebody who's psychologically equipped.

0:52 - Resource management! Just cause you found the shotgun doesn't mean you get to go blasting your way to safety. I love how in the games you're always very aware of how much ammo you have - and it's never enough. In this movie we're always keeping track of how many shots he's got left. Pray and spray is not an option in the games and it won't work in this movie either.

0:59 - Locks. Fuck locks. Navigating obstacles as you move through the games is a big part of the experience and it's something that was really fun to integrate into the story.

1:04 - What I really love about RE4 is that you aren't trapped in a single location like the mansion or the police station but rather you're moving through a larger world. In this movie our character is progressing from one location to the next and each new setting holds a unique threat. (You can also see that at this point he's got his hands on an MP5)

1:08 -
RE is of course a franchise that's got a ton of zombies but it's also got all sorts of weirder monstrosities. Really wanted to make sure that we never got a handle on what kind of dangers we'd find. It's not just a zombie movie. The T-Virus can have a lot of different effects and I wanted to make sure we had a variety of adversaries.

1:25 -
The slow discovery of horrific elements is something I really love about RE. It's not a run and gun action game. It's about tension and atmosphere and so I really wanted to lean into that. As much as there's plenty of action in the movie it's equally important to honor the dread. That moment when you look down a dark passage and you know something awful is waiting in that darkness for you. You don't want to go forwards but you can't go back. That's the sweet spot."

I don't even know what this means. A good writer-director wrote and directed a film that specifically references the rules and tropes of the series (healing items, weapon upgrades, scrounging, puzzles, Umbrella, etc), telling a new story in the world where the Umbrella outbreak happens.

How is that a "Random Horror film with a Resident Evil logo slapped at the end?"

I don't know what people want? A shit fanwankery film of Chris and Leon, retelling the garbage story of the games? Probably.
Nearly every sequel is exactly what you're are describing, every Resident Evil game is exactly what you're describing too.
This ain't it, doesn't mean it won't be good.
But by this trailer alone it's look like your standard horror movie that releases in the dozen each year.

I love RE games but the their story telling is very much gamey which only works as video games.

If you to try adopt RE movie to be 1:1 to RE games it would end up terrible as we saw with CGI RE movies.

Directors are better off making their own "version" of RE movie.

Doesn't look like resident evil at all
This is absurd, you didn't see the whole thing. And what does RE look like? Mansion, zombies, Chris and Jill cosplay for a billionth time? This is an original story, the author didn't want a rehash, which implies a brain in his skull. His movies were interesting and original, I don't doubt this will be better than any RE movie up till now. I just can't believe people want the same thing over and over and over.

Looks like a fun zombie movie, but a shit Resident Evil movie.
What would be a good RE movie? Turn the whole RE2 into a fmv? There is not a single RE movie that can be called good yet anyhow.

That's exactly what most people here want. For some reason, they want an 8 hour video game plot condensed into a 2 hour movie.

I agree with you that I just don't see that working without looking like a RE Cliffnotes: The Movie, and then one would have to ask who is that movie even for, because the idea of it sounds like a mess to watch for anyone new.

I just want a good Resident Evil movie. I'm intrigued by whatever it was I saw in the trailer but I didn't get any strong Resident Evil vibes from it.

I maintain the first film is pretty dope. That, and Event Horizon, are Anderson's only good films.
The second film is fucking terrible. It's fun, but it's atrocious. It's just so, so stupid, terrible acting, cheap.

Iron Jim Cameron also really likes the first film.

What the fuck! No references to the games in a 2 minute teaser trailer! This clearly has nothing to do with the games and shouldn't have the Resident Evil name attached to it!!!
What's funny is there are literally some references even in that short teaser, like the medical bag like Rebecca Chambers had.

I can get RE buffs not liking it. I never paid too much attention to the story. I loved Weaps and this looked awesome to me.
I mean, I'm a RE buff and it looks exactly like the games.

I also have friends who love the series who say it looks nothing like it. Those friends have only ever played 4, 5, 6, and Requiem, the action entries. I think that's where this disconnect is. This looks like the survival horror entries, but a lot of people are only familiar with the cheesy action super hero protagonist entries. Personally, if I saw that trailer and no one told me it was RE, I still would have known.

In a minority here, but I thought that Barbarian (one of Cregger's other films) is one of the worst horror films I've ever seen in my life.

It was like it was written by two different people - one who wanted a tension filled, psychological horror, with an atmosphere conceived to make you feel grossly uncomfortable; and another, who wanted some banal, cliche riddle monster flick.

Going by that, the first half of this film will be amazing, and the second half will be a complete turd.
