Retronauts Podcast Thread

Been away from my work PC for a couple of weeks so I haven't listened to Retronauts in a bit. Just catching up now, and wanted to say this Nintendo Power episode is fantastic. Wish I would have heard about it and commented on it on their website before it was too late. Going through and listening to it again before I move on. All of these episodes with the backer being a guest host have been exceptional!

Pocket Episode us up.

We’re all pretty big RPG fans on Retronauts, but in the (roughly) 30 years we’ve known them in their current console form, very few games from this genre have been set in the present day. And just why the heck is that? Well, I could tell you here, but then why would you bother listening to the episode? Thanks to Kickstarter back Juan Soto, Retronauts Pocket 20 brings you a thorough discussion of the surprisingly limited world of RPGs with contemporary settings. Joining us for this one is guest Kat Bailey, who knows her RPGs — and you may remember a few related podcasts on this topic she hosted in the past. Anyhow, enjoy, and please leave us your thoughts in the comments section below!

Man the Jeanne D'arc name drop makes me want a sequel. Just take the armlets, burning aura's and lizzard men etc and plant them in a different public domain story. Robin Hood, King Arthur etc.

Retronauts Volume III Episode 21 is up. The subject? Games tailored towards girls.

Special guest Rachel Weil (aka Party Time Hexcellent) is a terrific contribution to the show.

It was pretty good. I like episodes that deal with stuff I have no clue about.

I like the point the guest made, that people will shame girls for liking things that adhere to their traditional gender role, in an effort to subvert said roles and push their agenda.

I fully expected the show to be pushing for androgeny, and skwewer the games covered for supporting traditional gender roles. It was nice that they could acknowledge said roles exist and that it's okay for people to enjoy stuff that falls into them.

It was hard to hear Ray on a couple of the most recent episodes (the two before this "games for girls" one, which I haven't listened to yet). It sounded really faint like maybe his mic wasn't on and his audio was getting picked up by someone else's mic.

People do this? Guess not anyone I would interact with.

I stayed away from the topic, but I think a lot of people were upset with Nintendo for "submitting" to gender roles when marketing the shopping elements of Animal Crossing to girls.

I don't interact with this type of person in real life either.

Just listened to the girl game Retronauts, most interesting episode in a long while. really want to track down the Sailor Moon RPG now!

The girl games episode was fantastic. I love unexpected topics like that because they are so informative.
It was very well done and I enjoyed listening to it a lot.

Thanks.

I enjoyed Bob talking about how much he liked Princess Tomato and the Salad Kingdom, lulz.

Bob mentioned somewhere that they had mic problems during that recording session and he had to go in and manually screw around with Ray's voice to get it even as audible as it is on those two shows, unfortunately.

Cool episode about Joe & Mac. I never heard anyone talk about Congo's Caper before. It is a good game.

Only thing I could nitpick is they forgot to mention that Caveman Ninja (Joe & Mac) appears on the Wii compilation 'Data East Arcade Classics'

So you might wanna see if you can pick up a copy of that before heading to MAME. It's got some other cool games on it as well.

The girl game's episode was really great. Going in I expected a long-winded episode detailing how most games tailored towards girls are rather sexist, but instead I got to listen to a really informative episode with a really knowledgable guest. One of my favorite epiosdes to be sure.

Retronauts 22

Chris Kohler returns!!!!!!! :D

A whole lot of rambling on this episode but man, it's so great to have Kohler in there. His chemistry has been missed, and all four guys (in the same room) were terrific. Final Fantasy V music for the interludes this time too.

This is the most 1up of the new Retronauts, I think. Brought a tear to my eye. :)

I actually started listening to the Game|Life podcast (which is also excellent) when Chris wasn't showing up on Retronauts Vol. 3, but it was nice to have him in there this week for sure.

I don't know much about the Secret of Mana games, but I enjoyed it when Chris said that people who thought Secret of Evermore was better than any of them should be murdered.

Congrats Bob!
I think there is a non-zero chance this becomes a USGamer sponsored podcast at some point

oh man, that's pretty great news
i've been a pretty big fan of bob since he started at 1up and it's been kind of a bummer seeing how much trouble he was having getting work
well deserved
'bout time jeremy hired him! (i'm sure jeremy doesnt actually have the power to hire people over there)

Nice to see USGamer has turned into Little 1up. Well, Little "Final Days" 1up when Jeremy ran the show. Good to see that team working together again.

The show is roughly 5 times better when Kohler is on. His energy is just what is needed, also he's the one who is just impolite to interrupt at the proper time to either get things back on track or turn it into a new more interesting tangent.

He is a very dominating voice. The others are often more reserved, but Kohler is a powder keg of energy. I love it and wish he was on more often, as he perfectly compliments the crew

I could never remember it's name until now, but my friend had a Colecovision in the 80's. That was in New Zealand where they must have been less popular than in the US, and I never knew anyone else who had one. I remember playing a shooter where (we thought) the bullets fired faster if you rubbed all the buttons at once, so we would drag the three middle fingernails on our right hand up and down the numbers until they started to get bruised.

t's official: We're headed to TooManyGames next month! Slated for Friday evening; more details to come as we get closer. See you there!

The longest-lasting retro game podcast continues its series of live appearances after its revival last year! In a first for the show, we discuss the mocked but fascinating history of the 3DO: its big promises, its small successes, and its ultimate flameout — but it had some pretty good games, too. Join us for an entertaining history lesson and plenty of memories to share from the hosts, and you!

The topic makes me want to go to the convention just to be there for it. Travel looks like a PITA though since the convention centre is so far North of Phili it's practically in Canada. Kidding but man that urban sprawl is not good for people who don't own cars.

Is there any chance Chris Kohler will be more often on Retronauts? Or is he too busy with the Wired podcast and Good Job Brain? Retronauts really becomes a lot more lively when he's on the show. There's a situation in the most recent episode where Parish and Kohler are arguing about whether or not the Colecovision was really a noticeable generational leap over the Atari 2600 - and for a moment the podcast really felt on fire. That was really a nice pace of change, since recently Retronauts feels a little too often like Jeremy gives a history lesson while the rest listens to him and agrees.

Episode 23 is up and for some reason isn't titled Gotta Go Fast:

Hey folks—it’s Bob again, and happy to report this is the first episode of mine in a while where I didn’t sit down to edit and discover some horrible audio problem that didn’t present itself during the recording. So hooray for that! Anyhow, you might not think this topic is your cup of tea, but in recent years I’ve become a huge fan of speedruns, and discovered they’re much, much more than watching people cruise through games at an alarming speed. And if you don’t believe me, listen on and prepare to have your mind changed and/or blown by our deep dive on this topic—and be sure to check out the links below if you’re interested in seeing these speedruns for yourself. Thanks again to Nich Maragos, who provided the generous donation (and topic suggestion) that made this episode possible.

Great episode overall, though Jeremy seemed a little down.

Also, is the show going to continue after the first year is up? Are they going to run another Kickstarter?

I would have to imagine he is, but I'll pledge extra towards a Kohler stretch goal in next season's Kickstarter.

This I will also cosign. Another favorite Retronauts Classic guest.

He's on the Insert Credit podcast, which is much different format than Retronauts.

I'm still behind with the episodes but I'm starting to catch up. Some thoughts:

- Harvest Moon was a great choice for a topic, so I had high hopes for the episode being as good as the Wario Land one. Unfortunately, I couldn't stand listening to the guest, at all. Someone in here described him as too "casual" which I think is one way to put it. Also, Ray and Jeremy only played one or two games in the series?!

- The retro compilations episode was very insightful and well-prepared. Everyone participated.

- The Destiny of an Emperor episode really intrigued me, but only because of what Ray had to say about it. I also feel like Jeremy and the guest seemed to me rather unprepared. If I were the one who requested the episode, I'd be disappointed. Hope the backer got what he wanted out of it.

- Matsuno episode was fantastic. Glad Kat was on it. Everybody had something meaningful to add to the discussion which is what I come to this podcast for (if it wasn't clear already, haha).

This has always been one of my favourite gaming podcasts, and while most, if not all episodes are worthwhile, I think that some of them could be even better if they would give themselves more time to prepare. I'd be ready to accept a bi-weekly format for that.

Speaking of format, I like the division between regular and pocketsized episodes in theory, but so far, a lot of the pocket ones (not all of them) have really suffered from a) probably being recorded right after the regular ones (I don't know that for sure, but the gang tends to be a bit worn out in those) and b) maybe not being taken that seriously which often leads to less preparation resulting in a more monologic show.

But yeah, like I said, I love the podcast, and I'm actually planning to go through all the 1up episodes again once I've caught up with S03!

I don't think there will be another Kickstarter -- Jeremy has lamented the burden of reward fulfillment on his blog, and he's going the Patreon route for Game Boy World. If they do continue the podcast ( please please please -- not sure if they've actually said one way or the other yet) and use a funding method outside of regular ol' PayPal donations, then I bet it'll be Patreon.

I totally get wanting to avoid the difficulty of shipping out physical goods, but I hope that whatever strategy they pick opens up the possibility for topic-picking/guest-hosting duties again.

They said explicitly that they'd be continuing although not how they'd plan to work it.

The dream is to get it hosted by USGamer, right? I'd be fine if they also dropped the Pocket episodes and went biweekly- I find them pretty skipable.

Did anyone catch the name of the Japanese (?) legend about lost youth they mentioned? I couldn't quite make it out. It was referenced around the time they were talking about Ingram's cryostasis.

They just need to pick the right topics, I think. The Colecovision one was perfect because not much needs to be said about it, but the console still is worthy of an episode.

Personally, I could see them using that format on quirky '80s developers, like Hot B for example.

I don't think we got an episode last week, presumable because of E3? I'm still catching up so I don't know if they mentioned something on the most recent episode. Also, today's episode isn't out yet. They're not on hiatus, are they?

Oh, and all the best to T-Frog. Fingers crossed that it's nothing!

They posted this on twitter last week:
Maybe this won't be a surprise, but due to E3 priorities, the podcast will be taking the week off (at least?!). You'll know when we're back!

They're recording an episode on the 3DO live at Too Many Games Con this Friday.
