Retronauts Podcast Thread

Great topic, and the guest was knowledgeable and insightful. That said, I'm disappointed Bob Mackey didn't finish the game and even more disappointed that Jeremy didn't play it. As far as I can tell, there IS a Mac version of Planescape: Torment, at least on GOG.com. And it's $10.

This has been a persistent problem with Retronauts. There's a big, noticeable gulf in quality between the episodes where the podcasters have played the games in question and where they haven't. As far as I'm concerned, it's not even worth covering a topic unless at least one of the main hosts knows the game properly.

The Castlevania episode was pretty good, too. Really great to hear discussion of how well-made Castlevania and Castlevania 3 are. I love how Parish started it off by saying Castlevania was tough but well-designed and fair, basically cutting off any contrary (and wrong) opinions from showing their ugly heads. There's a lot of general whining and exaggeration these days about difficulty and bullshit, pseudo-intellectual complaints about "bad design" in NES games that drives me crazy.[

this is why you're my dude

did anyone else see someone fucking bought jeremy a framemeister?

damn...talk about generous, pretty awesome to see too!

Hey man, I really like the knowledge you drop during episodes that comes from interviews with developers. Is there an easy way to see all the interviews you've done?

Just about all of them are either on 1UP or USgamer. Try a Google search? I don't have a central repository for them, sorry. I guess I should!

Re: the Framemeister, yeah, that was an unexpected and generous gift, and I've already started using it for Game Boy World (Super Game Boy captured via an RGB-modded Super NES I bought). The GB footage in this video was captured with my new setup:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3YTtp5-QGg

Because of this, I've also picked up a modded N64 and intend to get as many other modded retro systems as I can find or have made, and possibly an Analogue NT for NES capture (since it costs about the same as modding an NES with a PlayChoice 10 video chip and is the easiest way to do 240p RGB capture of Famicom Disk System games). Basically some dude sent me a $300 gift and now I'm going to spend thousands on equipment and games... but man, the videos I'll be able to make. For Retronauts, too!

As for the Mac version of Planescape, that was added a couple of months ago without any particular fanfare. For the 15 years prior to that, Planescape was Windows-only, and I've dropped by GOG a few times over the years hoping they'd finally added a WINE version to no avail. I'm happy to learn that I can finally play it, though I wish I'd known about the Mac port before recording that episode.

just to throw this out there: there are much better & cheaper options than gutting a Playchoice 10 now, thankfully! got my board modded by a gaffer here, i wanna say the whole thing cost maybe half of the Analogue's pricetag. also, does that thing support FDS games? i hadn't heard that, might justify the price if so though

Yeah, I've done a lot of back-and-forth with company reps via email about its capabilities. You can hook it up to a Famicom Disk System, and it outputs at proper 240p with external upscaling. It's way overpriced but by all appearances it would be a REALLy good option for video capture. I'll look into some of those other options, though! Thanks for the link.

All will be forgiven once you post a detailed retrospective on the game (preferably with video) on US Gamer or Gamespite.

I wish they'd do an episode on kotor games, specifically kotor 2. It was totally out of left field, liked to play in the shades of gray. I think it's sad that they never had the chance to complete the game themselves. I shoould play the completed game
Sorta reminds me of planescape...

finished the gamecenter cx episode. them bringing up robin williams was a weird coincidence :(

I'm a little bit behind and I had the same reaction yesterday listening to the Sky Blazer ep.

Fantastic episode. I enjoyed Retro Game Challenge and really wish we would have the sequels :(

RGC2 is even significantly better than the first one and has an extremely polished English patch which you can play on emulator or flash cart. You should play it.

RGC3 is apparently pretty awful so you probably don't want to play it anyway.

I don't know how to use those flash cart things...but maybe I should figure it out. I've heard it's much better but didn't realize there was a translation (they may have mentioned it in the episode or in another episode previously but it sailed over my head)

Thanks for the tip!

Hope we hear about the future plans for Retronauts soon. They've been on a roll the past few months.

Latest episode is Retronauts Pocket about a few games that were played on GameCenter CX.

Also Retronauts is going on hiatus until maybe October, and looks like they're gonna finish the rest of the Kickstarter stuff like the DVD before they finally start a Retronauts Patreon.

Pleased that Bob picked LayLa. As a fan of the game (username quote!) I felt he undersold the good things that it does, but as he hasn't actually played the game I guess that's understandable. Sad that Ray will not be hosting any more as I tend to enjoy his episodes most. Patreon is a good move.

I really enjoyed this retronauts "season".

I hope they will return to do more shows (I know is almost a sure thing...but not a sure thing yet).

When they return I hope they will revisit some previous covered games. If they turn out half as good as the castlevania episode, they'll be excelent.

I'm only about 40 minutes into the Game Center CX episode and the Nintendo Channel specials (which I believe had a brief revival during the 30 Yen Wii U VC game promo) have not been mentioned yet maybe it gets mentioned later (they have mentioned other specials though). Just in case they do not, those were basically shorter special episodes and tended have much simpler goals (Qix was clear a stage with 99.9% of the screen filled, Fire Emblem 3 was make it through the first 2 chapters of book 1 without anyone dying) so more of an introduction to a game or a "this is a cool thing you can do".
Edit: Turns out it was mentioned. I wonder if copyright police took down the ones I saw on youtube years ago.

The AVGN mention reminds me that the Nerd does tend to complete quite a few of the games, even if he does have to pull out the game genie sometimes. I guess it is a live comedy vs. acted comedy difference though.

:(
Hope Ray reconsiders. Godspeed to him. Look forward to finding out where the show is headed next, but it's just not gonna be the same or quite as good without R.Barnholt

I think people are overreacting. He just said he wasn't going to host anymore, not that he wouldn't be on the podcast.

yeah, but he also said something along the lines of "if they need me for an episode here and there i'll be back for that"
seemed to imply he wouldn't even be a regular anymore

which is a huge bummer i love ray

Hearing the news about Ray quitting makes me sad :'(
He is a great host and some of the episodes he hosted are among my favorite in this season.
But when you think about it, he didn't talk much in the other episodes. I'm looking forward to his contribution in future episodes.

Now I'm catching up the last episodes and I must say that the Castlevania one was fantastic. Very focused and the discussion was flawless. I would even say I enjoyed it more than any of the old Retronauts Castlevania episodes. I really wish to see more episodes like this in the future.

Other than that, there is something that bothers me.
I like Bob and what I does but his frequent whining about difficulty in games and how he encourages emulation is starting to become an issue for me.
I'm perhaps the only one who is bothered by this so if such is the case, please ignore my comment.

Keep up the good work guys.

Hey everyone, Bob here -- The Dark NEOGAF Overlords finally approved my account, so now I can participate in this thread instead of just lurking. Huzzah!

Welcome! I'm glad you finally made it in. I hope you didn't have to wait a year like I did, but I guess that's a standard thing based on what I've heard from others. Anyway, thanks for this Retronauts season. I'm looking forward to many more!

Here's a link to the Retro-GAF thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=555654

It has links to all the specific console appreciation threads in the first post.

We should open a Retronauts community thread to discuss about podcast topics. With that you can address them in the following podacst. (Kinda like a Q&A)

Was streaming my Retronauts database from my Subsonic in the car today. I usually burn through a replay of the first 100 episodes every year on the way in to work and back. Today I had on the classic Saturn episode and was filled with so much glee.

Sharkey, Shane, Jeremy and the old crew rejoicing in one of my all time favorites.

Such good times.

Does anyone have links to the original series? Seems one of my kids deleted them from my HDD and the backup won't restore it :(
