Retronauts Podcast Thread

Super 8 was discussed in the episode.

Comedy option: Eggman cosplayer.

Oh Bob. Fat guy jokes? Comedy depends, above all else, on an element of truth.

I read your USGamer article too. Still doing some weird things with the research/comedy IMO:

Pretty sure Mark Ekko was somewhere behind the idea for this fantastic game dev interview motif.

I don't know if you're being deliberately obtuse but there's a huge distinction to be made between Dyack's situation and the typical "crummy book" or "crappy J.J. Abrams movie." Context is everything.

There are examples of film flops being so bad that they permanently killed the careers of execs/directors/entire studios. Lots of them.

So the best way to get Bob to lavish attention on you is to turn the Retronauts thread into your own personal livejournal!

Well, you've gotta post that stuff somewhere. LiveJournal's been all downhill since the Russians took over.
Don't you ever say things like this again! Your podcasts are the best podcasts I have listened Mr Parish!

You must not listen to many podcasts, man. There's a whole iTunes out there waiting for you.

I thought Robotnik was the preferred retro nomenclature.

This has probably been asked and answered a million times already, but how can I get to all the old episodes?

Loved the episode and the waves of nostalgia it brought. Great job, guys. Really encapsulated what I love about the show in how it brought back a ton of memories.

The Shenmue music was a great touch too, Bob.

This is in reference to the backer episode that went up yesterday. I enjoyed the episode a lot, as usual.

That being said, I really like the Laser Times folks, in fact I just listened to its Best and Worst Christmas Special podcasts on Monday, but I'm hoping we get some other guests on the podcast sometime soon.

Maybe get some of the old regulars like Kat Bailey or Chris Kohler to be guests or perhaps bringing Sam Claiborne, Dr. Sparkle or the woman from the Girl Games episode back. I feel like inviting in new blood for each episode is one of Retronauts' strong suits, so why not mix it up a little more?

If I remember correctly, they're recording some of these episodes in batches due to time and geographical constraints. It might be hard to get enough variety of guests while doing these batched episodes. I would pay a king's ransom for some Scott Sharkey appearances though. I dunno what Sharkey's been up to lately but I saw his Twitter lamenting the loss of so much 1up / Retronauts content across the internet. I think it's time for him to come back. I miss his writing and reviews and miss his general anti-BS attitude. Maybe he's a bit too contentious for the regular Retronauts panel or too offensive for Imbarkus though. :(

Not sure if others are aware, but Kohler has a really good trivia podcast - Good Job Brain - that's been going on for a few years. It's one of my favorite non-gaming, non-NPR, non-tech podcast. It'd be cool to have him on for a few episodes too.

For future consideration, I think one of the Patreon tiers could be for putting together a big retro-retronauts episode. Include former regulars and guests and discuss retro gaming today, the future of retro gaming, and wax poetic about retro gaming's and Retronaut's past. Perhaps making it a live event? I'm sure something like that could get a few new backers and would make for a great cap to a season or something. Ohh I'm just full of wants and ideas...

I think I'm getting close to starting a new re-listen of retronauts...and maybe I won't skip the call-in episode era this time.

Oh - but first I will listen to the new one! The first full and mini episode this season were great and I look forward to the rest. I hope the hosts don't take fans' wistful reminiscence of past episodes or co-hosts as a slight to the current show! I..just think it's par for the course for fans of a nostalgia-driven podcast to be filled with nostalgia for the show itself :)

Been a bit behind, but I have to say while I really do tend to like Retronauts, even when I disagree with it, the flops episode was pretty bad. I just don't think it was a concept that worked well with the show itself, primarily because almost none of you had played the games that you were talking about, and admitted it.

This one was probably the worst episode of the show in recent memory, I agree with what others have said, it was kinda like the "Internet legends of flops", you all have done better work in the past.

Then again, I can live with you guys having different opinions than mine, but this episode came off as uninformed, and added little if anything to the conversation about these flops.

I think you have a good point there. While we might criticize the podcast, it comes from a place of love and respect. After all, I wouldn't have backed the Kickstarter and then the Patreon, if I didn't feel that way.

It's just we have ideas about how we think it could be even better than the already great product they turn out week after week.

There's actually been a fair amount of variety in guests for the episodes we've recorded so far — the overlap in first two full episodes is more a side effect of timing the holiday episode to... be out in time for the holidays. And some of the planned guests for our first two sessions fell through, so in a few cases we had guests from one episode kindly volunteer to sit in for another to make up for no-shows. It's hard to coordinate a large number of guests for these episodes, because we're making demands of their free time on weekends.

The unfortunate reality is that the old days, when the show consisted of a bunch of people who sat at adjacent cubicles chewing the fat, and the only person who normally had to come in from off-site was Kohler, who didn't have a wife and kid and a podcast of his own at the time... those days are long gone. The old format of the podcast is logistically impossible to produce now. We don't even work in an office now! The show was born of the convenience of a bunch of interested people working together in the same space, and it only keeps going because listeners continue to give us incentive to try to keep it happening despite all the complications and challenges.

To be honest, I miss the old podcast more than any of you, because it was part of an amazing period of my life that I really didn't appreciate nearly enough for the short while it lasted. I wish we could still make that show, but we can't, and we've made a commitment (and already put forward a tremendous effort) to make the new season the best it can possibly be. I swear to god we are pouring our hearts into this, and I'm sorry if some of you find the results disappointing. I ask that you give us a few more episodes to see where we're going with this before you write us off, please.

When it comes to the old days... we'll alway have Parish. ;)

I remain a fan. Generally happy with the output and results of backing. It's an incredible value I get from the program you put out, debate and disagreement is part of having an interesting conversation. Keeping conversations positive is hard.

That's just as true here as it is anywhere. I'm still listening, though I fear the Bombcast Games of the Year thing is about to swell up and eat a bunch of time any day now.

I'm always criticizing the podcast, for which I apologize but I like the current Retronauts as much as the old days.
They both have their good and bad. Going back and listening to the old show again now, I realized I forgot how chaotic some of the old episodes were. Some of them became legendary but there were some less interesting ones as well.

The only thing I miss from retro-Retronauts is the swearing. The hosts used to recognize the show was for adults so they didn't censor it. Now they aim for a larger audience I guess.
It sucks but it's not a big deal really.

I think Jeremy became a better host over the years. Outside of some rare silly comments in recent episodes (Framemeister? Eff that!) he knows how to control himself and that's really something I greatly appreciate.
People forget that doing a podcast like Retronauts isn't an easy task. It requires a lot of energy and time.

Anyway, Retronauts remains one of my favorite podcasts this year that's why I continue to support you guys. The host's passion is what makes this podcast so great.
Keep up the good work. I love you guys!

And sorry for my broken English. (´д`)

The old podcasts were great - but so are the new one. I am just happy we still get new amazing content like this. And like is already said, all the criticism here comes out of love.

Btw, will there ever be a USGamer podast? That would be interesting imo?

Wow, longtime Retronauts fans are going to lose it over the latest episode (at least for backers).

It has finally happened; Shane Bettenhausen and Christian Nutt are talking Nihon Telenet for the latest episode.

For those not familiar, this has been promised since the 1up days of the podcast. It's like the Duke Nukem Forever of Retronauts, only I expect it to be much, much more satisfying.

I can't wait to listen later tonight after work.

I still can't believe they did a Nihon Telenet episode without inviting Brandon Sheffield.

Oooooh, neat. That's one of those near-complete blind spots in my knowledge.

Nice! Always wanted to check out the Valis-games.

Btw, I quickly checked out the Nihon Telenet wikia-page, and it says that Sunsoft recently (which I guess means about 2007) acquired their catalog. Which makes me wonder - what really happened to Sunsoft? They used to be so great in the late Famicom-days, then became kinda shitty but still prolific in the Super Famicom/Mega Drive-days, before they just lost all relevancy (but still released some games during the Playstation-era). However, there recently was a small revival when Victor Ireland reopened their american division to release games on Virtual Console (and the Blaster Master-remake), before they eventually disappeared again. So what is the story here? Why did they go away? Why did they return? And why did they go away again? And what is the company up to these days? Maybe a topic for a future Retronauts?

They do mobile/social games these days, just like everyone else. They're one of those companies that "restructured" around the turn of the century and lost/laid off pretty much all of the dudes who made their classic games. They do still exist and they do still seem to care about their legacy--they just did a big retro exhibition at a recent expo, for example (http://idaf-nagoya.com/about/)--but their glory days are long behind them.

I don't know what went down with Vic Ireland... I get the impression that they were itching to give the consumer market another shot and Vic just happened to approach them at the right time, but it didn't seem to stick, did it? Maybe they had unrealistic expectations about how well their re-releases would do, maybe Vic overpromised, maybe they just picked the wrong platform, who knows. (I think he still posts here, right? You might as well just ask him directly.)

This makes me so sad :( How could gaming fall so hard when it used to be so great. Anyways, yeah, I feel pretty sure that they overestimated the power of Blaster Master, and that wiiware-release probably didnt no anything for them. Glad to see they care about their legacy at least, that more than can be said for Cacpom and Konami at least. Would be interesting to know where their former dudes ended up - the people that made Gimmick, Ufouria, Batman Nes etc were insanely talented, and I sure hope they are still out there somewhere making great games.

Do the backer episodes still have the Patreon advertisement at the beginning? I'm not a backer yet but it'd be nice bonus to have clean episodes.

So I dunno if people who actually played the Valis games will be unsatisfied but this last episode was so so excellent, all that trivia + critical insight = HOTT STUFF.

The long prophesied Telenet/Valis/Shane-cast just showed up in my feed...
