Retronauts Podcast Thread

This episode reminded me how underrated the Mega Man X6 soundtrack is. Almost makes up for how broken the game is otherwise.

This weeks episode was easily one of the best in the shows run. It's so amazingly nitpicky, in the best way, with three of my favorite people to listen to. Really I could just listen to Frank talk about history and preservation for hours.

I used an AMAZING flat-tube Sony Wega 27" TV from 2000-2009 until I bought the HDTV I've been using ever since.

Yeah, I had a similarly excellent CRT (repoed off an ex-roommate who couldn't make rent) that I had to abandon when I moved to California. I don't regret it or anything (I think it would take up about 1/4th of my apartment here) but I definitely miss it on occasion.

Haven't you been through this before? You might get the bug again.

Then you get to actually go out and collect it again. Bonus!

Nah, not really. And I'm keeping the games I know I'll actually revisit; I suspect my pared down collection is still quite a bit larger than the average.
That's the major rule for me, and I've found over time that I'm only interested in revisiting a select few. For all the rest, I'll listen to Retronauts! *turns to camera and smiles*

The scales have fallen from my eyes.

I have a 36" CRT sitting in my living room right now... gonna be very sad once it finally breaks or we have to leave it behind in a move.

That behemoth weighs 250 pounds easily though, I feel bad paying people to move this ridiculous piece of outdated technology.

A friend recently gave me an old Sony Trinitron flat screen (sorta) CRT and I was gonna replace the very curved CRT in my classic game setup.

It weighed a ton, a slipped and dropped the damn thing bringing it into the house, crunch, boards spilling out, etc. :(

You can't really buy them anymore, except for direct from manufacturer from Alibaba, from what I can see.

I had a nice, 32 inch flat screen CRT that I bought in 2005 and we ended up giving it away when we moved in 2008 because it was so heavy. The main reason for buying it was our old, curved CRT only had Closed Captions 1 and 2 and the English subtitles for ¡Anita, no Te Rajes! moved to CC3. But it did also make games look better.

I've got a 27" Trinitron from 2003 in storage at my parent's house. One day, years from now, I'll finally have the space and time and stability to set up a proper retro gaming space and be able to bring it back out. And it will be glorious.

For me, the physical collection is half about playing games and half about enjoying collecting per se.

I think it's slowly been sliding toward the enjoying collecting part for me. I realize that logically I should do what Jeremy mentioned and only keep the ones that are special or that I know I'll go back to, but then I remember how awful I felt when I sold off a chunk of my collection twice in the past, and I abandon the idea. I don't really know what I'm hoping to accomplish by collecting. It's not like I'm going for a complete collection on any platform, but I'm driven to keep doing it by something I can't really describe. I imagine what will finally break me will be moving to a place that's too small to realistically hold what I have, but until then, I guess I'll keep on going.

When the PS4 and Xbox One were announced I still didn't have a 1080p TV yet. I decided I needed a 1080p TV or what's the point of having next gen systems and I noticed all new TV's had basically HDMI inputs and nothing else. My old TV had two components and 3 composites(1 with S Video) and nothing currently being made had that. If you're lucky it has one composite and one component instead of a hybrid.

I decided to get rid of all my retro home systems and use the money for a really nice new TV. I kept my NES and SNES but got rid of everything else. I kind of miss my 3DO but that's about it. I'm more into handheld collecting anyway.

New topic!

Pokemon episode is up for backers.

I'm currently working my way through the originals on the 3DS. The goal is to get all 151 Pokemon on Blue just like I have on my physical Blue cart. I bought the Pokemon 3DS and I never transferred over any of my data. The plan is:

1)Catch every Pokemon I can Blue
2)Catch the Red only Pokemon and pick the other fossil and whatnot
3)Buy Yellow on my XL and use it as a mule to get the Red Pokemon into Blue, evolve the Pokemon that only evolve through trading, get the remaining starters, and do the final Eevee evolution

I just finished 2 so I'm getting to the end. Not much longer now. Oh and yes I am exploiting the hell out of Missingno and the Safari zone trick etc.

*picky nerd time*

You also missed the Pokemon Mini which is not the same thing as the pocket Pikachu:

I believe it is still the tiniest handheld with interchangeable cartridges ever released. Definitely the smallest Nintendo ever made:

This sounds like me. I guess I like to play the games, but I already have way more games than I can ever hope to complete so..guess i have no idea why, but i still continue to collect and for some reason i also really enjoy it.

Oh, I love playing the games. I find most of them as fun as the modern releases. It's just hitting me more often that I'll never have the time to get around to all of them, even if I didn't have to do anything but play games all day every day. I guess I'll be okay with hanging on to them unless the collector's market crumbles for whatever reason.

Wow, weird. I was working at a game store at the time this released and we SHOULD have been selling it, but I've honestly never seen one of those in my life.

Also, I hope people will forgive us for leaving things out of the Pokemon podcast--it's such a huge series that we spent 45 minutes talking about everything BUT the games.

I dont really play any modern stuff outside of Nintendo, Souls and some indies, simply because I find old games to be in a completely other league in basically every way outside of presentation.

So what are the odds we get another Street Fighter episode to commemorate Street Fighter V? :P

The original SF Retronauts episode was one of my top 3 of all time. All time.

Pokémon Mini is a fascinating piece of hardware. Would make an interesting micro episode.

This just raises the question on what everyone's top 3 episodes of all time would be.

Survival Horror and Saturn are the obvious top 2 episodes, but it's the third one that's tricky. I loved the PS1/Iwata episode, the Neogeo Pocket/Wonderswan episode, the 2008 Famicom anniversary episode, and for the laughter it brought me, the Sonic call-in episode.

The Sonic call-in is the all time most hilarious for sure. Legit best for me is hard to say, but I have a soft spot for the Tomb Raider-episode which was released alongside Tomb Raider Underworld, since I played the original game while listening to it. Garnett Lee in particular was on fire for that one.

I think my favourite three episodes from the first run would be:

Saturn
Famicom
Super Mario Bros NES games

Second run would be:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Super Mario Bros The Movie
The Simpsons games

Current incarnation:

PlayStation/Iwata
High Fidelity Classic Gaming
ICO/Shadow of the Colossus

The Saturn and Phantasy Star episodes are my favorite by far. Before he was the ultimate Sony fanboy, Shane Bettenhausen was definitely a Sega fanboy.

I wish the first run had an RSS feed - download and iTunes only makes it hard for my Android podcatcher.

But going back to the 1UP recordings, they aren't my favorites. I like to listen to Retronauts with my son, and the language is sometimes too much (i.e., cursing). I wish they kept it clean, because they would probably have been the best freeform discussions around.

His sony-fanboyness is just insane, but in a fun way that made for some great podcasts compared to the more sane Parish and others. Always loved their recurring Final Fantasy VII discussions.

The majority of the contributors kept it clean, Jeremy, Kohler and Ray don't swear much on Retronauts or their solo projects, but Scott Sharkey would constantly pepper his commentary with driveby F-bombs, I can agree with that.

Worth it. I miss Sharkey. One of my top Retronauts ever is the time loop survival horror episode.

Time to do a followup Micro episode!

Yeah, there are lots of little things that are wrong in the episode. Not complaining, though. It's not like the RGB websites that have years and years to get all the details right.

*Picky nerd voice* CRT's capped out at 1080i, not 1080p.

Consumer CRTs. I have a broadcast monitor that can do 1080p24.

Of course, even the broadcast monitors could not actually resolve a full 1920x1080p. Horizontal resolution of the shadow mask or aperture grille prevents that.

There's also CRT-driven front projectors, talk about a whole different rabbit hole.

Finally getting around to listen to the episode about high fidelity retro gaming, and man, this is awesome. I could probably listen to this subject every week lol.

You can just hear the hosts shifting uncomfortably and looking at each other with horrified expressions in that Sonic episode. It's honestly too uncomfortable for me to re-listen.

I love that episode; it's one that never gets old.

This just raises the question on what everyone's top 3 episodes of all time would be.

Saturn, The Chrono Sequels, 1988/1998. Leave Roberta Williams alone! Also the Klonoa segment with Jeremy and James Mielke is top tier. Wish Mielke had been on more podcasts during his time at 1UP.

I just finished the retro displays episode. As someone who has just gone through this rabbit hole myself over the last six months, it was nice to hear - great job. Love hearing FC and CN on the show.

I had never heard of FDS Stick - anyone have impressions? I'm usually not much for such hardware but I have an actual FDS and its ... not quite right and I'm not sure I trust myself to calibrate it.

Also - is there a place where we can find show notes to see the names of the music tracks on the show? I have searched and can't find it.

Oh, the music was all from Mega Man X6. One of the golden examples of "bad game, extraordinary soundtrack."

Ok, cool, thanks. Haven't played it and didn't recognize.

Different question - what is the best way for a backer to suggest an episode topic? Can I do it here? I have one that I think could make for a nice micro episode.

The Pokemon episode is a very revealing look into Bob's psyche.

It was a very good episode. Really great to hear the series get much more of a fair shake than the old Pokemon episode when everyone on it was trying to be cool by not actually liking it.

It was funny hearing Bob keep proclaiming that something sucked, only to have Kat explain why it was useful. I really enjoyed the episode.

One thing I would recommend covering more the next time the whole hi-fi retro thing is that latency with a Framemeister + flat panel TV can still be huge compared to a CRT. Unless you specifically sought out a set for latency specs, you are quite likely going to be in the five to seven frames range for combined lag. Three frames is about the best you are going to get (one frame from the TV and two from the FM).

The more time I spend with my CRTs and RGB modded consoles, the more I feel that the authentic retro experience is as much about latency as the aesthetic.

Go play NES Punch-Out!! for a couple hours and see what I mean. Playing it, and the 2009 Wii installment, on both CRTs and flat panels will really get you thinking about how game development has changed to provide for lagged displays, and how those lagged displays will never be appropriate for the twitchy classics of yesteryear.

There really was a lot to cover in the Pokemon episode, you should do another pass.

Stadium and transfer paks, Snap and Blockbuster Pokemon printers, etc. etc. Good ep tho!

I'm afraid to ask.

It was funny hearing Bob keep proclaiming that something sucked, only to have Kat explain why it was useful. I really enjoyed the episode.

To be fair, I was only down on Gen 3 because I play Pokemon games much differently than Kat does. Some would say I'm playing Pokemon the wrong way, but those are people who have friends that also play Pokemon.

I've gotten to converse with presidents and other top government people as well as meet a lot of my chef/game designer/musician/artist/writer/actor idols.

Is it weird that I was way more nervous to talk to Greg, Jeremy, and Bob? THEY'RE FROM E.G.M./1-UP!!!

(Excuse the haggardness. I had an amazing date 2 hours away in Chicago seeing Sophie together that got me home at 05:00 a.m. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wVh01KTHqo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdLvp630plc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sun0VjNnMEA )

Anyway, that show was tops, especially considering the boisterous environment, and everyone was rapt. As someone who bought a ticket to the show 95 percent to see Retronauts and 5 percent to beat people at fighting games, this was worth the ticket and time.

Saw the recording at the Midwest Gaming Classic today. I got Jeremy's autograph in one of my Gamespite books because I'm a huge dork.

Whoaaaaaaa! Did I take your picture?
