RIP 60Gb PS3 -- Now confirmed by Kaz

Yeah, Reeves is a wealth of information. Let's look at his previous statements shall we?

“I don’t think we’ll be disadvantaged. In fact I believe the first PS3s being manufactured are being made for Europe - which is a first. Between November 17th and December 31st we’ll hope to put them in as many European territories as we can, even if we have to place small seed quantities on day one."

And:

"We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even it didn't have games."

There's no way they're selling the 80 GB for $499.

It wouldn't make sense from a cost-cutting standpoint to add in 20 GB of space AND Motorstorm for a reduced price.

They'll remove Motorstorm?

Besides, 80GB is cheaper in mass quantities than the 60GB HDs, AND the 80GB version is cheaper to produce since it does not have the PS1/PS2 components.

If thats the case, Sony doesn't deserve to be in this industry at all.

I can't believe this. It's actually a reliable source (SCEE prez). Do they want the PS3 to be another Saturn, because at this rate, taht's what it will be.

i hope for sony's sake that the 80GB ps3 will be dropped to 499.99 once the 60GB ps3 is gone because if not then bye,bye sony.

makes seem no with capcom saying there would be another price cut by year end. everyone boycut sony and this stupid ploy to fool consumers

:lol :lol :lol :lol

Seriously this sucks.. I won't have the funds to buy a PS3 this month and I was planning on getting one at the beginning of september.

Sony just ruined their E3.

Haha, so that means the 60 gb model is on clearance :P
But it is. Get them out of the channels as fast you can and introduce a cheaper-to-produce $599 replacement that nets them a better margin. I'm highly skeptical of them being able to get rid of all of them at retail before winter, though.

At this rate if they did that, they'd just announce a 120GB system for $599.

there's definitely another sku coming to replace it- the current 60 gigs still had hardware emulation. you knew it was coming, just not THIS fast

An 80 GB hard drive adds ZERO perceived value.

Why make this SKU at all?

QFT, plz take his words with a grain of salt.

Sony..

why is it, that when you get a decent amount of positive buzz(see: great conference) one of your booger head execs have to come out and say some stupid shit and take all that good feeling and flush it down the drain.

i hope, for sonys sake, that this guy was on some kind of kool-aid, because if it's true sony deserves to be where they're at

Sorry but this is simply impossible to believe. Not even Sony could be this stupid. 2 weeks after the price drop announcement, the price goes back up to $599??

:lol

That's a different subject. Your claim was that it was costlier to produce -- it wasn't.

It's really unbelievable. I was going to get a PS3 right after I saw Killzone, maybe in November to save up the cash.

No wonder Nintendo is on top now, both MS and Sony are completely ****ing dumb about this.

well, lets just see if they're going to drop the bundled game and sell the 80gb for 499 or not...

it makes sense, IF THEY DO THAT.

if they don't, then yeah its stupid.

On second thought, there is NO way Sony is that stupid.

Ahh. OK. Nvm then.

I guess we find out in two weeks.

To net a margin you have to actually sell the thing. They've been unable to shift PS3s at $600 for nearly nine months now, but apparently that extra 20Gb of HDD space and a copy of a three-month old game is the magic bullet that is going to catapult the PS3 into mainstream acceptance.

OMFG HWHY!?

Maybe the 80GB is going to $399 for september onwards?...

WTF. I don't get this, so if they're getting rid of the 60GB and keeping the 80 how does that make sense? Not everybody wants Motor Storm.

WTF.

What? This doesn't make any sense. 1) Why is Reeves talking about america and 2) The 80 gb sku is a limited edition.

because what he says makes SCEE deal sound a lot better?

But the truth is that Jack already said that SCEA will have both SKU's "going into holiday season", so people need to ease up on the koolaid

How many times does this need to be explained?

1. 60 gig drives are more expensive for Sony to acquire than 80gig ones.

2. They need to clear the retail channel of the ton of existing 60 gig units and introduce the new one.

3. Introduce the new limited edition SKU with the new drives and a packed in game, cut the 60 gig price so that (they hope) it flies off the shelves.

4. When the 60 is no longer easily available to consumers, the pack in goes poof and the 80gig is sitting at $499.
