Speevy said:There's no way they're selling the 80 GB for $499.
It wouldn't make sense from a cost-cutting standpoint to add in 20 GB of space AND Motorstorm for a reduced price.

80GB PS3 now $499
New 120GB $599
...my guess anyways.

But it is. Get them out of the channels as fast you can and introduce a cheaper-to-produce $599 replacement that nets them a better margin. I'm highly skeptical of them being able to get rid of all of them at retail before winter, though.PG2G said:Haha, so that means the 60 gb model is on clearance![]()
smurfx said:i hope for sony's sake that the 80GB ps3 will be dropped to 499.99 once the 60GB ps3 is gone because if not then bye,bye sony.

Besides, 80GB is cheaper in mass quantities than the 60GB HDs, AND the 80GB version is cheaper to produce since it does not have the PS1/PS2 components.
QFT, plz take his words with a grain of salt.OldJadedGamer said:Yeah, Reeves is a wealth of information. Let's look at his previous statements shall we?
I dont think well be disadvantaged. In fact I believe the first PS3s being manufactured are being made for Europe - which is a first. Between November 17th and December 31st well hope to put them in as many European territories as we can, even if we have to place small seed quantities on day one."
And:
"We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even it didn't have games."

Why make this SKU at all?

Same here.davepoobond said:well, lets just see if they're going to drop the bundled game and sell the 80gb for 499 or not...
it makes sense, IF THEY DO THAT.
if they don't, then yeah its stupid.
MassiveAttack said:Sorry but this is simply impossible to believe. Not even Sony could be this stupid. 2 weeks after the price drop announcement, the price goes back up to $599??
:lol
To net a margin you have to actually sell the thing. They've been unable to shift PS3s at $600 for nearly nine months now, but apparently that extra 20Gb of HDD space and a copy of a three-month old game is the magic bullet that is going to catapult the PS3 into mainstream acceptance.MightyHedgehog said:But it is. Y2Kev said:What? This doesn't make any sense. 1) Why is Reeves talking about america and 2) The 80 gb sku is a limited edition.
Shouldn't we take that stance with all of these corporate talking heads, though? Sony's got an especially good record this gen.Defuser said:QFT, plz take his words with a grain of salt.
I read the article and started scrolling to find this gif. Thanks for not letting me down!tribal24 said:![]()
