so sony will be saving money on both hard drives and the emotion engine... there's no doubt it'll be marked at 499, hell I wouldn't doubt a drop after the holidays... blu-ray will sell strong this christmas, and the prices on that are dropping very rapidly.

this is so damn true.

I just found out they have 250 GB 2.5" sata HDDs for 180 bones. Just a few months back the 160 GB joint (they are now like 50 bucks) was that much. Tech is evolving quick as hell these days.
 
Is the 20gb of more space worth having, or the EE chip? I am really on the fence between buying a 60gb now and having the hardware B/C and waiting for the 80gb to price drop. Also, I heard eventually that the EE will be disabled altogether in favor on software emulation, even if your PS3 has the EE chip. Any truth to that?

I dunno about the 20gb... hell just buy an external HDD that's what I do, I store all my videos and music on that... and use my 60 GB to hold games/ demos etc. And I'm hearing that software emu is better anyways, it has to be at something like 90%, and in the next firmware it'll be even better.

I think Phil has stated that the hardware can't be turned off if it is present in the PS3.

A price drop means that you can buy the product for less money. Being able to buy the product for the same price(s) that it sold for previously, but with upgraded features, is not a price drop; it's a hardware revision.

If they had kept manufacturing the cheapest SKU, and dropped that one down to $399, that would be a price drop.

This? Way to kill the logic of the 80gb + game package. If they replace the 60gb with a sole 80gb package, they've locked themselves into a PR nightmare. Will it be $499, making the 80gb + game package look like the worst "deal" ever? Or will they be forced to price the 80gb at something above $499, negating the initial price cut?

This is a wonder to behold! I'd love to see the bets employees are placing on which executives will still be around a year from now...

Thanks for that and thanks for the answer you gave above. Not to derail the thread, but BC is a moderate concern for me because I always want to have at least one machine in my house in which I can stick the PlayStation or PS2 disc and play the game. Remakes and downloads and emulations and re-releases and ports are nice, but I paid for the real thing at least once, so I'd like to have it able to work for a long, long, long time. Thanks again for the help.
 
It may help to look at this from the PS3 motherboard perspective.

It hasn't exactly been a secret that the current PS3 which still currently contains some PS2 components will be gone eventually, phased out in favor of a pure software BC solution.

Looking at it that way, it's not a complete surprise that they're not planning on making more of the current 60gb PS3 model.

The 80gb SKU that's being discussed is by all indications is the PS3 with entirely software BC. This one has a re-worked motherboard with fewer components (no PS2 hardware at all, and a few other chips that was required to get the PS2 hardware to output to HDMI removed as well).

As others mentioned, it's completely insane right now to come out and say "oh we'll go ahead and drop the price on the 80gb sku as soon as you guys buy up all our old 60gb PS3's still in the channel."

In short,

($499 model PS3 out now) current 60gb PS3 = old motherboard, PS2 components still a part of it. Still costs Sony an arm and a leg to produce. Not a huge surprise they don't want to keep producing this model.

($599 model PS3 bundle - targetted for the holidays) 80gb PS3 = latest revision of PS3 cost cutting. New motherboard with fewer components on it. No more PS2 hardware. Would cost Sony an arm to produce.

Assuming the 80gb PS3 isn't the PS3 with a die shrink, expect at least one more configuration some time down the line, though probably not for this holiday season.

The questionmark right now is whether or not SCEA's statement that they're confident they have enough stock of the 60gb PS3 to last through the holiday season. We probably won't get an answer for this until we get sales figures back to see how the price drop affected the PS3 sales.
 
As I said earlier in this thread, let us all not forget that rumble-enabled third-party controllers are coming in September. I am not exactly sure if we will see Sony's rumble controller, but it will likely factor in the bundle that is available in the latter part of this year.

This is the European BC list, should be similar to what we will see when the EE-less PS3 comes here in August.

Oh and buy or borrow a memory card reader... unless you want to start over on all of your old games, heh. The latest firmware update added the ability to go from memory card to PS3, progress on PS3, and then go back to memory card. So I can play Final Fantasy 12 at home on the PS3, go my in-laws house and grind, and come back home and transfer new dater. Cool.
 
It's funny reading through the post over and over again and seeing how the sony fans keep updating their talking points, changing their predictions, and going love/hate on Reeves/Tretton/Kaz depending on the latest swing in news. Even sonycowboy is fun to read through the changing conditions. If you want to see on-the-fly, shifting, seat of your pants, second by second company defense, Sony fans are a wonder to watch in action.

They've successfully defended EVERY single shift that's occurred during this thread. At this point, Kaz could talk about a $699 SKU and you'll see some brilliantly crafted spin explaining how it still equates into a comprehensive and sensible business strategy.

Do people honestly think Sony is going to say "And after we clear out excess inventory of the 60GB model, we'll drop the 80GB to $499!"

They might as well just tell consumers to hold off buying any PS3 system completely and wait for the 80GB model to hit $499 in a few months.

seriously this is SOOOO obvious... what's there goal of dropping the price 100 dollasr? ask yourself that... to clear out the 60 gbs right?

ok if they want to clear them out... but you can get an 80 gb model for the SAME price in just a few short months how in the hell are they going to clear those 60s out? The 80gb price cut will be hush hush until the 60 is on its way out... which won't but until much later this year.
 
The only info i need from Sony is: How long will they wait after the 60gb is discontinued, to drop the 80gb to $499. There's no way I'm falling into this "price drop" trap.

Well, that was quicker than I expected them to admit it. I think they took the pleas for transparency a bit too close to heart. Oh well, maybe people won't notice for awhile, at least not if they already have 2.5 million 60 GBs on store shelves.

Consumer confusion? All they know now is the the old "high end" PS3 is $499, and there is one with a game and a bigger HD for $599. The average consumer will not be confused at all.

Okay, thinking about it I do feel silly for not realizing why they wouldn't come out and say it. It's funny cause I would point this out other times when execs would say there would be no upcoming price drop. :lol
 
The way I see this, everyone was right. The price cut crowd got their 15 minutes, and the GAFFers whose first instinct was to look at Sony's product strategy with the PSP and declare 'value packs' were right all along.

Uh but yeah you could. The launch of the system came before the price drop. Fairly basic stuff there.

They've marginally upgraded the specs of the low-end unit and introduced a higher-end unit. The SKU prices remain at $499/599, just as they were at launch. You've really got to be drinking the Sony Kool-Aid to see it otherwise.

EB had new 20 gig units in stock on their website as late as last Sunday, but were pulled on the announcement on Monday.
