"The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted. We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won't be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated."
Why do you say this when they've already done that once before by discontinuing the cheaper $499 system?joshcryer said:THE PRICE OF THE LOWEST END PS3 WILL NOT GO UP AGAIN GET THIS THROUGH YOUR THICK HEADS, OMG I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS THREAD IS STILL GOING! :lol :lol :lol

And congrats Sony for throwing a huge chunk of your potential consumer base into purchasing limbo!

I think a lot of you are going to be really disappointed when the 60GB runs out and the price doesn't change on this bundle.

GavinGT said:Hold on guys, I think I've got this whole mess figured out. So Sony told everyone that the price drop would double sales. Well, when they realized that wasn't going to happen, they announced a price INCREASE for August in order to spur sales in the meantime and get the numbers they were looking for, if only for a month or two. Make sense?

what is this guy saying? I can't read his lips.
Established by who? A bunch of forum posters?joshcryer said:The price of the bundle isn't changing, they're phasing out the 60GB to replace it with the 80GB. They'll release a "non-bundled" 80GB for the same price of the 60GB now. This has been well established freaking 500 posts ago. Why people CONTINUE to post this non-sense is beyond me!
GuessWho said:sony is making some pretty dumb moves. First the 20 now the 60. This is on par with MS sku strategy.
Agent X said:I understand why they're doing this...but they would be better served to just "play dumb" and act as though they're sticking with two tiers, wait for the 60 GB model to finally sell out, then spring a "pleasant surprise" by dropping the 80 GB model to $499 when the 60 GB model is finally gone. By that time, everyone will understand what is happening and no one will feel bad about it. But until then don't comment on your long term strategy. Don't say you're keeping it at $599; don't say you're dropping it to $499. Plain and simple...NO COMMENT.

Kaz Hirai said:"From a hardware perspective, the $499 price adjustment we did for the 60GB version for the American market, we're no longer in production for that product," he said in an unedited on-camera interview. "Once that product is gone from the retailer shelves, then we're back to a $599 SKU only, so it's not like we have a two-price strategy in the US market. We found out very early on how consumers react to having just one SKU as opposed to two."
kevm3 said:Here's what I'd do if I was Sony....
Keep the 60 at 499.
Offer a standalone 80 at 549
and have the bundle at 599.
When the majority of 60s are sold, move the remaining 60s at 449, offer the standalone 80 at 499, and get rid of the bundle all together. That'd be a rather smooth transition. People will NOT buy ps3s in reasonable numbers for 599, so making that a standard sku again is beyond stupid... and I'm sure after Sony sees the reaction they are getting from that news, they won't even consider it.
If Sony all of a sudden drops the price of a standalone 80 to 499 before Christmas, that was essentially asking gamers to pay $100 for Motorstorm.

ComputerNerd said:There will still be a time gap though between when the first areas run out of 60's, and they have to wait for all other areas to run out before the new 80 (although talk of an unbundled 80 is still speculation at this point, however likely it is.)
I wonder how long that gap would be. A few months? How long did it take the 20 GB to disappear from one area, to disappearing from everywhere?
maynerd said:So what the hell guys...do I buy a PS3 or wait?
Yes, they are clearly drunk with success right now.bc226 said:I love how everyone is saying that they will only have an 80 gig sku lest we forget they went 20,60,80 who really thinks they will not go 120 to still get 599$ thats sonys whole gameplan sell the most expensive machine for how ever long they can get away with it. I lets say the sell out the 60 then start selling the 80 also at 599$ then after 5 months or so its becomes cheaper to produce 120 gig machines low and behold he 80 drops to 499 till they are gone then Bam the the 120 now become the 599$ system. They are going to sell the 599 till a lot of you get smart and Say NO they tested the waters and found 4 million that said yes so they now if they cane make you think the machine is worth 599 your gonna bend over and say thank you.

Did Kaz really say the $600 Sku would be the primary Sku once the $500 is sold out?
HocusPocus said:Sure did.
Not according to a lot of wishful thinkers who would have you believe it's a fact the 80GB model will immediately drop to $499 after the 60GB sells out.Karma Kramer said:So doesn't that confirm that the price is now basically back up to $599?

I dunno dude, ask these amateur Sherlock Holmes' that believe it.Karma Kramer said:But how will they know when it sells out? Isn't that figure hard to determine? I mean what if some stores sell out faster than others ect...

joshcryer said:You need to have a rather analytical look at things to understand how the markets work. They don't need to have the 80GB without EE+GS model at $599, and they won't have that model at $599. This is a common practice in all areas. Look at Apple, they keep their pricing model quite secretive because if people knew "oh I just have to wait a few months and I can get 20 more GB for the same price" then they would go ahead and wait that few months. The markets have to take into account smart consumers, the ones who listen to what corporations say, so corporations cannot divulge pricing information for this reason.
GavinGT said:Which is VERY wishful thinking. Why would they even announce the 80GB model when they did if they knew they would have to play these games with the price just to push the remaining 60GB PS3's? If they plan to sell the 80GB model at $499 (as so many of you claim), the best route would have been to simply allow the 60GB stock to run out, then announce that they'll be offering the added value of an 80GB HDD but at the exact same price point. Sorry, but I think $599 is here to stay, at least for this holiday.
