RIP Duke Nukem Forever. 3D Realms to close

Update 2: Duke Nukem Forever publisher Take-Two has confirmed to Shacknews that it was not funding development of the 3D Realms project.

"We can confirm that our relationship with 3D Realms for Duke Nukem Forever was a publishing arrangement, which did not include ongoing funds for development of the title," said Take-Two VP of communications Alan Lewis in a prepared statement.

"In addition, Take-Two continues to retain the publishing rights to Duke Nukem Forever," he added.

They should put it out as a parting gift, in whatever state it's in.
It's sad to hear anyone closing, I never saw the appeal of them myself, but I know some people were really excited for DNF.
You never saw the appeal of 3D Realms? Apogee?

Actually it's pretty awesome that they renamed their company 3D Realms and then actually never finished development on a game in 3D.

To be honest you have to wonder what exactly were they living on all these years.
I seem to recall reading that they sweetened up ports to pay the bills, kinda like Tose. I don't know if that's true.

I thought DN2 was really good, and DN3D is kind of cool, but no, not really. The whole idea of 'always bet on the Duke', and people thinking it would come out and be amazing always baffled me. Either way it sucks that it's closing, it's bad for anyone to be out of work.

IT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO END LIKE THIS!!! NOT LIKE THIS AT ALL!!! I WAS SUPPOSED TO GET THE GAME AND THEN THINK IT WAS OKAY I GUESS LIKE CHINESE DEMOCRACY!!!

THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!! ;_;

Buy the DNF IP, Carmack.

You KNOW you want to.

I wonder if TTWO can get it consider 3DRealms never delivered on their contract. Someone (I forget who . . . Interplay?) gave them a lot of dev money (many years ago) and TTWO inherited the contract. 3D Realms has failed to deliver. So . . . ?

I blame Ken Silverman for not making Voxlap useful enough.
Leave Ken alone. Apparently he WAS 3D Duke. I would have taken a build engine sequel if it meant I still got to play it sometime this millennium. Duke was never about the best graphics. DN3D was about massive and exceptional level design with tons of satire and enemies and half naked strippers.

Source engine is the only modern 3D engine that would have fit the franchise. Playing Left 4 Dead made me Nukem sick.

1. Create assets
17. Develop engine
39. Take trip through the spanking machine
71. Delete Cinemax porn from DVR so wife doesn't see
12. level all chars to level 80.

Seventeen years ago, Wolfenstein 3D's intial shareware release came out. If you are reading this story, you know the history of Wolfenstein 3D. Authored by id, published through us when we were going by the name "Apogee Software", Wolf3D was responsible for a great number of people and companies doing what they do. The influence of this title goes way beyond what the mere pixels on the screen.

Today the granddaddy of shooters turns 17, as it's original 1.0 shareware release was on May 5, 1992 on the PC - something we still sell to this day!
wow they REALY need some cash (this was posted yesterday!)

70. Scrap everything and start over, issue press release citing "DNF is a [insert date here] title"
71. Snort some coke

There, now it seems more believable. It's all in the details you see.

Nah, Wolfenstein sales probably add up to a THOUSAND dollars a year.

Oh man, I would have taken a Build engine sequel aswell, but voxlap would have been even sweeter. :)~~

The most surprising thing about this is that I'm still somehow shocked they are closing and that I will never actually get to play DNF. You'd think I would have given up on that notion like a half decade ago.
Real fans of Duke never gave up. We just kept quiet whenever the trolls came around every time 3DR mentioned DNF was still in development.

Any developers reading this thread who happened to have been on George's secret little developers board, is it down? (assuming it was still up anyway)

Actually, snorting coke off the backs of hookers was items 52 to 68.

Truly a shame, and it pains me to say it but they really only have themselves to blame with the DNF debacle.

thisfuckingsuck.gif :(

I wouldn't say I'm a die hard fan, but I do have a user account on their forum and always felt 'this was the year.'

I hope some other developer picks it up. Or some hacker releases everything.

Better that it end this way and preserve the joke than actually come out and be mediocre IMHO.
