So long, Duke.

Better that it end this way and preserve the joke than actually come out and be mediocre IMHO.
Duke4ever, so awesome it had to be stopped by the publisher so its other studios can make cash.

They should Mount & Blade it, release the unfinished version for $30 or something and use the money to keep putting out newer builds until it's done. :lol

I'm surprised they haven't closed down earlier -- how do you keep a game in development for over a decade? It's not high art - it's Duke Fucking Nukem. Set up levels with pig cops and strippers and there's your fucking game.

That was an Apogee title, not 3DRealms. And it's not as though ROTC is going anywhere, although I'd love a XBLA port to go along with the awesome Duke3D one..

Eh, it was released just as Apogee was turning into 3D Realms. Close enough. :P

Welp, Joe Siegler officially confirmed it: DNF is dead, and so is 3DR.

What a sad way to end that legacy. I hope that members of the 3DR team are able to get back on their feet and keep kicking ass in the spirit, if not in the name, of Duke Nukem. I loved Duke Nukem 3D, and I'll never forget 3DR's contributions to the industry and the FPS genre.

Hail to the king, one last time :(

edit: I'm drinking tonight in the name of Duke fuckin' Nukem.

Man, I still remember commissioning that cover. I think we put it on the cover three different times during my tenure there.

I actually worked on DNF a little bit after I left PC Gamer; consulted on the story and wrote a version of the opening cinematic back in 2002-ish. In one sense it's a real shame that all those man-hours of hard work ultimately went to waste and my sympathies go out to everyone affected by this, but in another this is perhaps a fittingly legendary end to such a legendarily delayed project... the gaming equivalent of Hendrix choking on his own vomit. Or something. Maybe now that the plug has finally been pulled all the pain and suffering can end and those left behind can move on with their lives.

I feel sorry for the employees that have lost their jobs but what did they expect tbh, money don't grow on trees, the game should of been out years ago, surprised they lasted this long.

Honestly, I'm just shocked that they didn't close down years ago.

That's just it man; they were around for so fucking long that I thought it was really going to happen. I'm one of those retarded saps who's been on the 3DRealm forums for god knows how long.

If I ever get tagged, let it say : "He believed DNF was coming out." I don't care. I really did believe it :(

Damn... I don't really know what to say. The sad thing about it is so many people would have bought this game; the word of mouth alone would have been enormous simply for the fact that it was Duke Nukem Forever, and it was actually out. Hell, I was going to buy it just on principle.

What a shame. Reality's a bitch.

You make a good point there, I didn't even need to know what the game played or looked like, I would've brought it day one tbh.

Finally!

Now who's gonna buy the brand and assets and actually finish DNF?

I'd love to see Epic tackle this. It has Cliff Blezinski's name written all over it.

But I wish this weren't true. I've spoken to George Broussard in the past and he seems like an excellent guy. All the best to him and the 3DR crew.

This is such a shame. They had every opportunity to finish this game but they couldn't get things together. It was like the opposite of what happened to Daikatana. Daikatana tried to forge through development with old tech and ramped up to an enormous staff to finish it as fast as possible. 3D Realms had too small a staff and kept jumping to new tech which put them way behind schedule.

This is the end of an era, folks.

I'm legitimately sad about this news. I always considered it a possibility but I never wanted this day to come. =(

Somebody should buy the Duke Nukem IP and take up the challenge of finishing the game, just so the game can be in development for another 5-10 years. The legacy must live on!

I wish I knew just a little more about what the hell went on.

One side of me is saying how tragic this must be for the team.
The other side of me is calling this one of the biggest bitch moves in gaming.

The industry is the industry, and life goes on.

I was going to perfect my El Fuerte some more tonight but instead I will play through DN3D Hi-Res Atomic Pak in honor of a true gaming legend. This is the equivalent kick in the nuts to Rare leaving Nintendo for Microsoft or Bullfrog being purchased and gutted by EA.

When the Orion Reptilians scan what's left of our database 2000 years from now the fall of Duke will be one of the few accented bullet points of our human existence.

Duke is a real mystery now . . . 3DRealms who owns the IP rights is going bankrupt. But TTWO still owns the publishing rights. So how does this get resolved?

Man...

Duke was huge part of my younger years. RIP 3D Realms. Hope everyone lands on their feet.

Isn't it still possible to save the game if the money is obtained from some other source? Wouldn't be the first time a company is about to go bankrupt, but is saved at the end of the day.

Unless 3D Realms has some property to actually show to any interested investors, then I think we can safely say, "RIP Duke." It is too bad since I have been looking forward to a good current gen FPS that doesn't take itself seriously, at all.

Very strange stuff... what the heck happened here? 3DRealms was self-funding the game, so Take Two has nothing to do with this. So um... yeah, we have no idea why their funding suddenly disappeared. Very, very sad, of course (I love Apogee...), but strange...

Oh, and that first update confirmed that the initial report that the new Apogree and those DS/PSP Duke Nukem games aren't affected by this. So they can still fund that, but not the main company? Or was that already funded, so that's why it wasn't affected? It's being done by an external developer of course, but published by Apogee, a subsidiary of Apogee, aka 3DRealms... so yeah, odd.
