You just don't get it.

I don't need to know about his life to appreciate him because of all the great music he has made.
And stop arguing, this isn't even the place to do that. Ughh
I do get it, people are upset because in some way they never expected such an icon to die. They're shocked because they're reminded of their own mortality.

RIP Michael. I am going to buy one of his albums tomorrow and listen. I was born in '89, I am way overdue to appreciate his music.

I'm '89, too. You have no excuse!

I'd recommend this one, has some modern versions with people like Akon and Fergie.

Or his #1s.

I'm doing a MJ Playlist now (I have one with lots of his songs, but it has some other songs mixed in, I'll make a 100%MJ list now, ;))

I'm arguing idiotic semantics with... well. nevermind that. We'll just say you.

I just feel long live the king is probably not the right thing to say right now. As far as I'm concerned there is no new king and there won't be for a long time.
There's the problem.

Also, "The King is Dead. Long Live the King" can refer to him living on forever through his music. Don't be so hyper-sensitive.

RIP MJ.

One of my favorite moments growing up was whenever MTV would premier his music videos. They were absolutely amazing as they were more like short films rather than regular music videos.

The man always knew how to entertain.

If your neighbors were awesome, they'd have MJ blasting like the people living below me have. :)

I'd peg the average age of people who are making jokes about Michael Jackson's death as no later than high school. No maturity, no class, and probably no real awareness of the guy's musical output.

Some of us like to use humor to get through a tragedy. I got nothing though, RIP Michael, you were one of the greats.

Pretty surreal to hear. I'm not really a fan of his music or anything but its still feels awkward to hear he is dead. :(

Side note: Jokes are exactly that, don't take them too seriously.

Yeah, you're probably right. I'm with you though. Rest in peace. You lived a hard life.

Can someone please explain the "he's number three" thing?

People always claim celebs die in groups of three's but that's not the case here since it was

David Carradine, Ed McMahon, Farrah, and MJ

Excuse spelling errors.

not to derail the thread but it might be true that celebrities die in 3's

first farrah, then michael... now jeff goldblum.
Ed McMahon died before Farrah.

proving my point or making a joke?

You just have a lot to learn about people, mourning and life in general.

People mourn celebrities, especially musicians because their music had an effect on their life. Maybe songs they made are a soundtrack to a great time in their life, maybe a time when they were having a hard time and one song or album helped them get through it. In a way, that celeb was apart of their life.

So for someone to mourn their passing is completely natural. For people not to understand is somewhat understandable, but that is the reason why so many people are effected. Many people grew up to MJ music, many went to prom dancing to Billie Jean, etc. His music was part of their life.

Can't explain any more plainly than that. Now if you want to be a "I am not a sheep" kind of dude and just make fun of people for mourning or at the minimum paying respect, that does make you a douche.

How big was MJ to a young child in the 80s?

Well, I was born in 1980, during the Reagan administration.

In 1983, I knew who Michael Jackson was. But if you were to ask me who Ronald Reagan was I would have probably thought we were going to McDonalds.

I might be one of the few that never believed in the accusations. Or maybe didn't want to believe, either way, his music was a big part of my youth. Feels awful to hear he only got 50 years on this earth :(

And as stated above, really hope he gets remembered for the god and not the bad.

Forget it, someone else here can argue about that topic.

I don't see the facepalm at all. This was never an OJ like situation where all the evidence clearly points to him being guilty of something, but a racist cop gives room for a jury to not convict him beyond a reasonable doubt. Michaels cases had people who clearly lied multiple times during testimony and actually had people to back up his statements.

Not saying the guy wasn't weird in any way. He clearly needed help. He's just not a pedophile.

Anyone else get really embarrassed when people freak out when a person they don't know dies?
:lol I love when people say things like this. There are people out there that cry their faces off in the presence of some celebs. Not because they are celebrities, but because they were affected by them in some way. This is nothing new. Heres a gif with a crowd reaction to Michael Jackson:

You think that chubby guy in the front is thinking "whatever I didnt even know him" right now? Give me a break. I feel more embarrassed for you because you cant grasp such a simple concept.

C'mon folks . . . a little levity. He made extremely popular pop music, he didn't cure cancer. Even the AP is having fun with the story . .
You can bet the people who will end up curing cancer won't get half the media attention when they die. But hey that's Humanity. If a famous, weird singer with a dubious private life dies, that's Earth shattering.

This will get buried under the more controversial post, but Michael Jackson's music was a HUGE part of my childhood growing up(born in 1982 here). I can remember us learning "Man in the Mirror" in 1st grade to sing at our graduation. I can remember after my older sister gave birth do my niece, and us driving fairly often from Brooklyn to Queens and back and his music always playing on the radio. Just his whole sound, musically and vocally is so ingrained in my memories growing up.

And just recently, since having my very first iPod ever(iPod Touch 2nd Generation), I have been listening through his older catelog and loving his music all over again.

It's just so weird, i was hanging out with my friends today when one of them tells me about Farrah dying...then later on I meet my Mom to help her with something and tell her the news and mention the whole "in 3s" thing and saying I wonder who might be next...and then I get home and see this breaking news.

After the Farrah news, one of my friends and I were talking about deaths, and how our respective father's passed...his was sudden(heart attack), mine was drawn out(liver cancer), and how it's a double edged sword either way, seeing them suffer long term vs. having them leave you suddenly...and now today, we have one drawn out death, and one sudden.
