Hmm, maybe we should swap the term "Rottenwatch" for "Metacritic," since in the end we all act as our own agents (read: critics). Oh god I can't let this die.

Metacritic is much better because they actually have some standards for who is counted in the average (and they weigh more "prestigious" outlets higher than, say, nerdy websites like Film Threat.) I never have honestly put much stock in RT scores unless it's something amazing, like a 100% or 0% average.

The Dark Knight lives up to the hype. It lives up to the hype of Heath Ledger's amazing performance as the Joker (he will get a post-humous Oscar nomination). It lives up to the hype of a movie following up on the slightly overrated, yet still awesome Batman Begins. And it lives up to the billing, possibly, of "best superhero movie ever," which, to be fair, has been bandied about a lot lately (you heard that term used for Spider-Man, you've heard it used for Iron Man, you've heard it used for X-Men, but this time it really sticks).

After walking out of it last night, I was so exhausted I wasn't sure I wanted to see it again anytime soon. But after thinking and talking about the film all day today... I can't wait to see it again. I'm considering getting out to a midnight showing this Thursday night even though I already have plans to see the it again on Sunday.
 
Some of the reviews for this movie have been completely over the moon.

I have seen the Dark Knight being compared to Heat, The Untouchables, Toy Story 2, Godfather 2, The Departed, The Return of the King, The Empire Strikes Back and even the Schindler's List. The way they describe it seems that it's impossible to watch the movie without having a raging boner throughout the entire 2 and a half hour.

I expected this movie to be great, like all warm-blooded human beings but this is just outrageous. I can't wait until tomorrow when the GAFFers come back and hype this movie some more from the early screenings.

If I sound negative, don't mind me because I am probably more hyped than a lot of you guys here. I am just trying to keep a level head among all this crazy hype because it's getting impossible to do that as the time closes in. I have been avoiding Dark Knight threads because of spoilers, I want to go in to the movie as a virgin.

damn i just walked out of TDK (imax pre-screening) and i gotta say... it lives up to the hype, this movie is damn DAMN good.
 
I watched Batman Begins last night in prep for this. It amazes me how well structured and tight the script for Begins is. No scene is wasted, the narrative just build and builds. It has this wonderful momentum to it.

How early are you guys planning on showing up for the advance screenings? I plan on going about 2 hours early, but i'm worried that people will camp out for it.

If it makes you feel any better I could see it 17 hours from now, but I've decided to go to the night session instead. Batman just seems like a night movie. GET IT!

yes, I could drive 2 & half hours both ways just to see this film two days early with my best friend, but I feel like i'd be cheating myself out of watching God's Gift to man unfold in front of me while 30+ of my friends watched with me at midnight Thursday.

Schindler is like Batman?
 
I know somebody who went to a preview screening of it last night and the cinema fucked up and they lost sound for 3 minutes of the film in the middle of the screening. No compensation or anything.

I remember I went to a 1am first session for Matrix Revolutions. I got there three hours early and people started showing up about 15 minutes later. The line ended up around 50m long (no joke).

I still contend that it was a good script buried in terrible direction. You and I could've done it better.

Nah, I think it was mostly the script in that first 20 minutes as well. Hard for anyone to get excited about the 'killing time till we find Neo' scenes. The whole Logos/Zion/Neo&Trinity heading to 01/Final Fight (except for the shitty flying parts) was handled great. Then of course there's that hokey Gloria Foster-less ending that seemed unbecoming of the series.

I still don't understand how people can say it was a shitty film, yet go and see some shitty sci fi flick like Aeon Flux and say its pretty good.

Me too. I saw Velvet Goldmine during it's original theatrical run. But that's because I'm a huge David Bowie/Roxy Music/Brian Eno/T-Rex/70's glam rock fan. Too bad the North American DVD isn't anamorphic.

Killer soundtrack, too.

I only read the beginning and end of the review to avoid any possible spoilers or anything related to plot whatsoever - I'll post those parts I read.

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I saw THE DARK NIGHT early this afternoon, in mind-boggling IMAX no less.

And I’m going to another screening at the IMAX tomorrow.

And I bought tickets to the Thursday midnight show at the IMAX a month ago when they went on sale, so I’ll be back Thursday night.

I must warn you. It is impossible to watch this film and not start spewing hyperbole upon exiting the theater. When the credits started I thought, “Best comic book movie of the summer.” When they finished I was thinking, “Best movie of the summer period.” When I stepped out of the IMAX and into the bright afternoon daylight I was thinking, “Best movie I’ve seen this year.”

Given the rapid growth, it could very well be the best film ever recorded by the time I see it again tomorrow.

Of course I can’t really qualify any of that and I would not place this film in my “All Time Favorites” list just out of respect of the films that earned their places there over the many years with countless rewatchings.

I can say without any hesitation that THE DARK KNIGHT is a spectacular piece of storytelling, that it takes the promise of BATMAN BEGINS and takes as giant a leap forward as EMPIRE did from STAR WARS or that Godfather Part II did from the first, that all this talk of Heath Ledger being nominated for his work as The Joker isn’t just industry buzz capitalizing on the tragic and far too premature death of the actor. He will be nominated and he would have been nominated had he been alive to see the film open.

The film is dizzying in its effortless mastery. Like I told you, hyperbole, but damn if I don’t think you’ll be saying the same things when you leave the theaters upon first viewing.

Now, I’m always the one trying to come in and temper expectation. I illustrated my problems with CLOVERFIELD when people were saying it was the second coming. I don’t like building up ridiculous expectation. I really don’t. I love the communal experience of sharing my thoughts on a film and reading your thoughts in emails and down in talkback and one thing I don’t want to do is hurt someone else’s film experience by overstating the quality of a film or putting it at some ridiculously high water mark that no film could possibly live up to.

But I am telling you guys that I walked into this film more hyped up than for any other film of the year so far and it was everything I could have hoped it would have been. I honestly believe that this film might be immune to expectations because I really don’t know how much higher they could have been.

GAP OF SPOILER SHIT I DIDNT READ

Mark my words: Ledger will be nominated, Wally Pfister will be nominated, Chris Nolan will be nominated for direction, Jonathan and Chris Nolan for script and if the movie Gods are feeling kind early next year we might even see a Best Picture nom.

It really is that good. I am already giddy about seeing it again in 15 hours.
