Rottenwatch: THE DARK KNIGHT

So what's the news on the first night numbers? I'm going to see this again tomorrow.... I VERY rarely see a movie twice in the same weekend, so it has to be special to do that.

First night estimates wont pop up until around noon tomorrow. Dont worry, if everything Ive seen/read/heard happens, TDK will do MASSIVE bank.

My GOD, not to be an ass, but i can see why heath went over, man that joker was fuckin intense. Every scene with him had me on the edge of my seat.

I could gush with superlatives very similar to everyone else in this thread and all would be the truth for me and completely justified, but I really want to give amazing credit to Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard. The scoring on this film was jaw dropping and a character in the movie no one recognizes until it has your skin chilled to ice and your blood boiling.

Certainly need to see the film again before I start making comparisons however while I enjoyed it, especially Ledgers performance it was far from a perfect film.

I thought Gyllenhaal had some pretty ropey lines and tried her best at them but she sadly didn't really add much and there were a couple of really, really ugly transitions. Also pretty annoyed
the narrows was completely missing and not even mentioned once

Well, its like I said - there doesnt feel like there is enough Batman in a Batman movie. That reduced screentime coupled with a less personal, compelling arc is my reason for not digging it as much.

But I guess youre damned if you do, damned if you dont. Because if Bruce had gotten the screentime I wanted, then Harvey's, Joker's, and Gordon's arcs would have all fallen by the wayside.

I actually wish there was less of Harvey's arc because they really didn't have a lot of time to really make it work - especially as TwoFace, that whole thing was over before it began. I didn't feel that there wasn't enough Batman, but I did feel that there was too much of Bruce's bipolar struggle in it. I felt they could have done with less of it because - hey, we get it. The story isn't that complex. I was more fascinated by how the Joker was developing as a major villain.

I actually thought that with the ferries
they would have let one crew turn the key and that they would have blown themselves up - because THAT would have been more like what the Joker would do in his experiment
.

The IMAX at the Mall of Georgia is sold out through Monday. I hope to see it again at some point there, but had to settle for a pretty bad screen at my local cinema. They had the edges of the projection on the fucking curtain for half of the movie.

I managed to get tickets for a Sunday showing there earlier this week, so I cancelled my opening night plans. I'm starting to get antsy and wonder if it was worth it, but I'm going to hold out anyway.

FRIDAY 5:30PM: Warner Bros sources tell me that The Dark Knight is opening to a humongous $60M today from a widest-ever release of 4,366 North American theaters.

its going to be tight between TDK and Spiderman 3.......i cant believe so many people went and saw SM3, was it that hyped?

Yes. Combination of
- huge marketing push
- S-M2 being such a massive critical/financial hit
- casual moviegoer not aware of how much of a disaster the movie was

I hardly ever give a shit about sales or anything like that, but I want to see Spider-Man 3 burn for its sins, and The Dark Knight is the one that should do it.

Just saw it again even better the secound time, johnan better get a best screenlay nod.theater is a god damn jungle they had to make us exit out of the back fire exits it was so crowded in the lobby.

That would be justice served.

What i liked about Harvey's arc,
was how spur of the moment his transformation was. It was a different interpretation of the character and for him to remain a long term villain wouldn't have made sense. His death was a perfect cap off.
A lot of the credit goes to Aaron Eckhart as he was superb. He is getting lost in all the Joker raves, but then i think Joker's character was handled as well, if not moreso, so it's understandable.

I was expecting just that in the ferry situation. That it didn't happen, kinda turned my expectations on their head.

nothing i could say that already hasn't been said.

but it was fantastic. ledger was far better than i imagined he'd be, even though i went in expecting to love the performance.

I'm assuming that Joker/Iron Man profits gif has already been posted?

;D

I hate to spoil this for people who haven't seen it yet, but--it's going to blow your mind.
It's a shame Iron Man had to come out this year. ANY OTHER YEAR and Iron Man would have handedly walked away with best comic book adaptation of the year. But as much as I completely and totally fucking love Iron Man and RDJ, TDK may be the perfect comic book movie. As in yes, it might never be topped.

I just got back from the theater. Amazing movie, Loved everything about it. And the ending made me really excited for the next batman film. So Awesome.

As a hater of the first Nolan Batman, I'd like to say that this movie was AMAZING!!! From start to finish I was on the edge of my seat, all the characters were in top form, and the action scene...man, oh man! Though, there just one itch that I just can't seem to scratch about Ledger's take on the Joker. Don't get me wrong, it was one hellava transformation and the man gave us a twisted, manic, psychopath, but idk it played out too...cold I guess. Maybe after several viewings will I get it *shrug*

I'm actually starting to fear for The X-Files next week. It has ZERO build up going in.
Me too. :( Their campaign really doesn't mesh with The Dark Knight's hysteria coupled with just a 1 week later release. I can see it flopping, as much as i would hate for that to happen.

The Dark knight literally has a clear path to the goal line for 3 weeks or more. Tropic Thunder (and MAYBE the mummy) are gonna be the walls it will run into.

I liked her much more than Holmes but hey to each their own.

I agree, but I really pretty much hate the Rachel Dawes character in general. Although she did serve a major purpose in TDK, so I guess there was finally some point in her character existing.

Kind of sucks for Aaron Eckhart, I feel he put up an incredible performance but no one is really talking about that. He's kinda been overshadowed by Ledger/Joker.

Katie played the sweetie Rachel

Maggie played the tough girl Rachel

two sides of the same coin. may as well have edited them into a two face for both films.

Not to speculate or anything, but this thing's gonna make big box office dough. Before today, I had never seen a line form outside a single showing that wasn't a midnight showing in my city. So awesome.

Darko said:

holy SHIT are you annoying.

Anyway eh I don't know if I'm biased towards Katie because she played the part in the first film and I got so attached to Begins, but eh...I just didn't really like Maggie's take on the character. But like someone said to each their own...

Also - whoever said that the actor for Harvey was amazing - oh god was he was...best actor of the film IMO.

My one complaint - every scene was so on edge, and there was always so much going on, I wish there had been a few more sort of meditative moments, you know to give the audience a little room to breathe.

That being said, the way the movie ends is absolutely perfect.

I got there 45 minutes early and I was practically last in line.... and the movie had been showing all day. Seriously, that's insane.
And my neck hurts :(

COMPETING STUDIO REPORTS: 'Dark Knight' may top opening day record with $63M and 3-day record with $153M! by Steve Mason

FRIDAY 4:00 p.m. (Pacific): Just got off the phone with a competing studio exec, and I am told that their "numbers crunchers" are, at the moment, projecting that The Dark Knight (Warner Bros) will break the all-time opening day and all-time 3-day weekend records, surpassing last May's Spider-Man 3. According to the studio exec, the Christopher Nolan-directed Batman Begins sequel is on pace for a $63M opening day! That does include the $18.4M reported by Warner Bros this morning for overnight business. If the number holds (or even if it is close), it will a staggeringly huge start for the impeccably reviewed superhero picture, and it will be enough to blow by Spider-Man 3's $59.84M opening day. My source also reports that The Dark Knight is on pace for $153M for the 3-day, which would top Spidey 3's opening frame of $151.11M. Keep in mind that when the numbers get this big, the percentages get very small. At $153M, Knight would set the record by a margin of less than 1% over SM3. The numbers laid out for me went like this: $63M Friday, $53M Saturday and $37M on Sunday. Complete numbers, including early results for Mamma Mia! (Universal) and Space Chimps (Fox), as they become available.

My stepmom wants to see it so I might tomorrow even though I've heard that no one can sing any of the songs. That sucks.
Take her to see the Dark Knight under the pretense that it's Mamma Mia.
