so i was just reading ebert's review of this, and is it just me, or did he completely miss the point of
the joker's "why so serious" stories about how he got his scars? ebert presents it as though the first story about his father is undeniably true; the movie very clearly presents multiple explanations for the scars, which in my mind effectively rules out any one as the definitive answer. i'm inclined to think none of them are true, to be honest.
weird.

sorry if the spoiler is unnecessary. just trying to be cordial.

I finally get to see the movie tonight. I just finished watching Batman Begins, and I'm SO glad I held out for the IMAX showing at the Metreon. Hehehehehheeheheh. :D

Definitely at 9.6 at that point.

As more votes are tallied, the rate at which the score falls will only get progressively slower. It will almost certainly stay at 9 or above, which means it's not leaving the top 5. There's a solid chance it could stay at #1 since the score is .3 above #2 in a very condensed list. And over 100,000 votes have been tallied, a very significant amount for any film on IMDB, much less a just-released one.

You understand that people can change their scores whenever they want? After the inital hype and multiple viewings I'm sure some will get changed. It'd be nice if it could stay up, it's time something finally removes godfather, but I doubt it.

Unlikely, with people saying the film is only better after multiple viewings. If you really think any remotely significant chunk of the 100k+ votes tallied so far are actually going to arbitrarily "change their minds" and lower their score to such an extent that it actually impacts the overall score and ranking, then I have something to sell you.

Oh I'm sorry, but not everyone thinks it's better with every viewing. This is just wishful thinking. Look I'd like to think it could stay there for a while... but I don't think it will. Also I don't truly believe this is the best movie ever, but like I said it'd be nice for something else to be on top for a change.

Saw it again at IMAX Sydney ealier this afternoon.

My god what an experience.

Prebooked my tickets via internet booking the day b4. Very Lucky I did. All sessions were sold out.

Got my ticket 2 hours before start time, people kept coming, reading the monitors sold out with a dissapointed look on their faces. And me with a big Grin :lol

Went around Darling Harbour for a bit, got a bite to eat(Orporto's Fuck Yeah!), came about 35 minutes before start time, I joined the queue which was at the start of the entrance. And the queue kept growing, both on the outside and the inside.

Eventually the line started to get in, seats filled up f'ing fast! Got stuck 5 rows from the front row towards the right side. Little dissapointed but now I know for this type of movie to queue in early.

My god what an experience. The IMAX formatted scenes are beautiful! The changing of the screen and resolution. Whoooa! The normal scenes still looking f'ing great, but the changing of screen to IMAX spec I cannot stop raving about.

Gonna see it again soon, this time with a back to middle seat.

Scullibundo, mate if you havent pre-booked a ticket dont bother going on the day, and if you do get there early for a good seat.

:D

Yep I booked my tix already because I tried to book on Monday to go on Monday and it was sold out. I plan on getting there an hour early. Fuck me the weather is shitty though for a trek to Darling Harbour.

My mom said she was going to see this and thats saying something.

I can't remember the last movie she went to. And she hates "those shoot em up movies" that I like so well.

I saw it on a normal screen and before th emovie began there was a disclaimer saying "This is not an IMAX presentation".

Some guy says "Rub it in!"

Much lolz ensued.

That's why this might be the movie to beat titanic. The monumental hype surrounding, heath ledgers passing, the 95% on RT and overwhelmingly positive reviews, the hype of all the broken records, and the positive reviews are going to drive this far.

Don't forget that Titanic was first at the box office for 13 weeks in a row. I expect The Dark Knight to have legs - but to expect it to have those sorts of legs is really hard to do.

Anyone honestly thinking this is the Titanic killer is nuts. I dont know if Titanic's record will be broken in my lifetime.

Lets get a second film to cross $500M before thinking about $600M, shall we?

As for TDK, since I havent actually thrown out a number, Im gonna go with $410M.

It doesn't have to stay in first for 13 weeks. You have to remember while titanic was in first for those weeks it was only pulling in 30 million at a time. With Dark knights opening weekend it took in 5 weeks worth of titanics pull. After this weekend it will be at about 10 weeks worth of titanics money. Don't underestimate word of mouth, and record hype. Everybody will want to see it, the more people go. I'm not guaranteeing it, but I'm almost positive at least 500 million from this movie.

it will easily be in your lifetime. With inflation movies have been pumping out high numbers for the past couple years.

410m? It's going to probably cross 300 million this weekend, and you think it's going to stop at 410?

You really think this movie will stop at $410M? It's already at nearly $250M.

I like to be conservative! Would you rather be the guy who says $410M and have the movie exceed that, or the nutter who says it will beat Titanic, and have the movie fall $150M short?

msdstc said:

You'd think so, but its been 11 years since Titanic, and even with inflation, nothing has even come close.

I honestly thought this movie would make $250-275 at the most.

At this point, I can't predict what it will do. It's a beast!

Scullibundo said:
I'll be very interested to see how close it comes to Titanic's worldwide gross of 1.8billion.

Not even in that department... but it'll come close domestically I think at least.

I'm not saying it will beat it, but I think it will be close. Like I said don't underestimate hype. If it can hold strong next week then I think it has it in the bag.

I think whatever movie hits $500M next will be a major event, since Titanic is the only movie to do it. Id love for it to be TDK, but I just dont see it getting THAT high. I admit, my $410M is probably a bit low, but at the same time, I think $500M is just too damn high.

I remember seriously posting a couple months back that it would do a bit better than Begins but not by much :lol

I think everyone knew it would do at least $100M better (sequel; inflation; BB becoming a major DVD hit), putting it in the $300M range.

But NO ONE predicted this shit. Its just crazy.

My dad just told me he wants to go see it again, but in IMAX this time. He rarely goes to the movies in the first place :lol I only saw it once opening weekend because IMAX tickets kept selling out, but I think I'm going to go see it 2x this weekend.

Bought tickets for friday and saturday (5th and 6th time :lol ), whats weird though is the theaters with Imax Screens near me arent playing Step Brothers at all :(, I wanted to see both.

I don't think repeat viewings can be underestimated here. I seriously have never seen anywhere close to this amount of people say that they're either going to or have already gone to see TDK more than once.

I've personally seen it twice, and might go a third to see it in IMAX this coming weekend since people are saying that it's worth it.

I went to see the movie tonight, and I really enjoyed it. But I think the Harvey Dent character should have had less importance in the movie. I just would have liked more Joker and less Dent.
Overall good movie, but it's totally Heath Ledger that made it good. Take him out and it's a mediocre film.

if you "took out heath ledger," the movie would make absolutely no sense. you'd have a movie in which the principle characters kept talking about a character named the joker who never made an appearance. in which case, yes, the movie would be mediocre.

unless you're proposing some hypothetical scenario in which ledger didn't play the joker and someone else did, in which case, your prescient powers for determining the advance suckitude of all other performers in the role is astonishing and awe inspiring.

Personally, I think the movie should have been split in two, released fairly close together like the Matrix sequels. It felt like I was getting a great Joker movie, but a very short Two Face movie back to back.

I really strongly believe that this will hit 500 million and then some.

That's what I'm saying. People are strongly underestimating the hype, word of mouth, and positive reviews. How great the movie is will really push it further. See spiderman 3 sucked ass so nobody really saw it twice. Plenty of people will see it more than once. Plenty of things going on.

- the hardcores guaranteed multiple views
- The casuals going to check it out this weekend after all the initial hype and word of mouth
- the bandwagoners.

That's because Dark Knight is going to make far more than that movie would. In my area it's sold out until next week. Besides why would you wanna see step brothers in Imax?

That's what happened with titanic. For some reason I can see it happening with this movie.

I know you'll say Avatar, and as a fellow Cameron-lover, Id like to see that too. But the realist in me says its been 11 years since Cameron has made a feature film, and its an original story, not a franchise, and so on. This is obviously a shot in the dark, as we havent seen a frame of the movie yet, but Im guessing Avatar does no more than a max of $300M.

My guess for the second $500M is actually Transformers 2, loz-worthy as it sounds, if the hype hits ludicrus levels with the masses like the first one did.

Yes but AVATAR will be an event movie as you previously said. The next real event movie. It will be an epic and the first real foray into taking 3D seriously as a means of progessing narrative film.

I don't think so if only because hype does not = people going back to watch it if it's mediocre. It would have to be a near fucking masterpiece for mums, dads, girlfriends and their friends to claim they want to go back and see it. Frankly I just don't see Bay constructing a film with that sort of praise.

So many people want to see it a second, third, fourth, etc time because the film is still rewarding after multiple views. There's so much content to explore that it's almost impossible to catch everything on one viewing, a rare feat for most 'superhero movies'.

Personally, I think 3 will be my limit (IMAX for last).

it's (deservedly) done really well. beyond that, who cares if it sets records? that doesn't seem important to me at all, especially considering the shitfest that some of those high-grossing movies are.

I agree with all of this, but the moviegoing masses obviously gave the first one quite a few repeat viewings, so I dont think its totally out of the question.

Jeez really I'm sorry man, but how would Transformers 2 get to 500, but Dark knight won't? It might get a bigger opening, but it won't get to 500 million unless it's a great movie, which I seriously doubt. I hope it is though, I loved the first one regardless of what Gaf says.

Because box office revenue isnt part and parcel with a film's quality, obviously. Look how many shitty movies have done huge bank, and how many great films have tanked. Michael Bay, whatever you may think of him, always does big numbers at the box office (aside from The Island).

It isn't, but it does directly affect the legs of the movie. Look at spidey 3. Seriously man this movie is pulling in 20 million on weekdays, hell 24 million on a Monday. Transformers didn't even crack 400 million last summer.

Like I said, Im just throwing that out there as a prediction. I dont know better than anyone else what will or wont happen.

It's a reasonable prediction, although I don't see it happening, I can see where you are coming from.

Fuck no. Thank god Chris Nolan did this movie and not some douchebag director who might think that'd be a good idea. The emotional impact at the end is invaluable to the experience, and it doesn't need to get drawn out. This film has perfect pacing.

Really. Two Face really couldn't carry his own film the way his character was designed (which was for optimal performance).
