RPCS3 Is A New PS3 Emulator, Still In Early Stage, Boots Commercial Game

We know that a lot of you want to get your hands on a PS3 emulator. Well, that day may come sooner than expected, as a team of developers is currently working on a PS3 emulator that is able to boot a commercial game. In the realm of emulation land, this is huge. Yes, this is laggy and buggy but the fact that an emulator can boot a commercial PS3 game is HUGE. The name of the emulator is RPCS3 and you can view a video from it running a commercial game below. Enjoy!

Wow, this is huge news! It'll be years before we get something playable, but it's a start.

New video showing the game running much better.

Considering that we still dont have a 100percent foolproof n64 emulator I am not holding my breath for this

Very intriguing that ots being attempted though!!!

360 emulation is also making progress, but nothing this far. I wasn't expecting this for years.

Can't wait to use it on my quantum computer.

According to some emulator developers, lower level APIs like Mantle (and potential DX12) could be a paradigm shift for emulation. Though other factors apply. Still, exciting times ahead.

I'm not expecting anything without a big leap in PC horsepower.

Wake me up in 6-10 years when next next gen consoles are out.

I'm no computer whiz but I fully expect emulation to stay at PS2/ Wii level for quite some time. And even then PS3 / 360 games will be janky as fuck. That's why I have no intention of selling off my HD consoles.

I'd much rather devs work on emulating the classic Xbox than waste their time with the PS3 / 360.

This is really exciting. I shouldn't have such a negative take on things but I'm sad this is happening before Xbox in a way. That console had a lot of exclusive gems that are still worth playing today. Phantom Dust being a huge one.

Of course, PS3 has Valkyria Chronicles and emulating it gives us an opportunity to play the Yakuza game we missed in the US. In four or five years when this is stable it will be amazing to go back to those.

This explains why OG XBox emu ain't happening.

Hey, it's not over yet. IT'S NOT OVER.

But anyway, they'd have to translate it before, that's not exactly an easy job for a team of amateurs.

Still a long ways off, but this is very cool news. I remember a GAF thread just a few years ago where everyone said that PS3/360 emulation is impossible and never going to happen.

With the more standardized and simplified PC "off the shelf" style engineering....aren't PS4 and XB1 going to be really easy to emulate in a few years?

This emu is hardly new... it's already a couple years old. Glad to hear they are still working on it and making progress, but it's not going to do shit for anyone anytime soon unless you're working on PS3 homebrew and you want to use it to easily test your works.

It's hugely impressive that they have gotten this far already. I can't wait to see what kind of progress they make over the next few years.

Holy shit, that is very impressive stuff. Didn't think they'd get this far so fast.

Again... this isn't new. First public version was May 2011

They've been working their asses off for 3 years on this. It's amazingly impressive but too many people think this came out of no where.

(Edit) To be clear, I think it's doing a disservice to ignore the fact that they've already put years of work into this... Not a lot of love or attention for those first couple years but suddenly "Oh it boots commercial games? NOW I'm interested." It bothers me is all.

People pay more attention when progress is shown, why is that so upsetting?

Each time I tried to search for thing like PS3 emulation lately I ended up in forums with people asking with people saying stuff like 'Come back in 20 years' or videos on youtube of fake emulators with a window running a video then linking (probably) a virus in the description.

I've actually been following it for quite a while...since 2011.
