Given the myriad of issues that BF2042 has been going through I decided to go into the way back machine and download BFV again. I think I dumped this game somewhere in the 3-4 month mark after launch because I just wasn't having fun. BF1 had already kinda soured me on the series as it was a massive disappointment after BF4, so I was already not really hot on the series when I picked up BFV.
I hated the maps and gunplay just didnt feel quite right IMO.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I dove in again and immediately started playing the Pacific theater content (which I didnt stick around for originally). This is so so much better than I remember. The Pacific content feels like a return to form. The maps just play much closer to the previous BF games that I enjoyed. Wide open, lots of different angles of attack but also some nice, more contained areas for close quarters fighting. (I havent really jumped back into many of the OG maps again though, so those might still be shit).
Gun play feels like it had been changed as well. I cant remember exactly what it was I didnt like about the gunplay when I played during the launch window but guns feel pretty snappy for the most part. TTK feels a bit longer than BF4 but not overly so.
I even like some of the match types they added: The transmission mode where you have to build radio towers is great fun and fortifications finally made sense to me. It's pretty fun to defend your tower and funnel troops into kill-zones but they feel fairly balanced since you cant make an impenetrable fortress with them. Tanks, grenades and bazookas can still make short work of your walls and barbed wire.
Team play even seems to be much higher than I remember. I cant think of the last BF game where I was revived so often. Players seem to go out of their way to get you back in the fight (I could have just been lucky in the servers I was playing in though).
I will say that BFV seems to have at least ended on being a solid entry to the series. If you arent feeling the love with 2042, then maybe you will find what you are looking for if you take a step back to the previous entry.
