RTTP: Crisis Core - Final Fantasy VII

My favorite PSP game. I'm a huge FFVII fan so this game really hit all the right notes for me. I loved the story and the end had me teary. I was leveled so high that I fought forever.
 
Outside of long ass and repetitive as fuck side mission
and forcing you play all missions to unlock hidden boss
, I love every shit about Crisis Core
 
Getting Gackt's voice and likeness for this game was one of the biggest mistakes. Gackt is expensive and I doubt his contract included anything about digital sales since selling digital PSP games wasn't a thing yet.

The fact of the matter is, there are plenty of people who like this game. Its not a shocking concept in the least, so i don't know why people reiterate it like its surprising.
 
Shame this isn't on PSN. It's coveted like the FF games were before they were finally released.

And yes, the game was good if not a bit easy but more exposition to the FF7 universe is always welcome. The ending too.
 
I didn't get far on my Hard Playthrough... didn't even finish the first dispatch mission I believe... dying far in and getting thrown back to the beginning killed the joy for me.

If I return again (likely after finishing the FFVII PS4 port), I will restart on Normal.
 
I really liked it.

I remember when I first played the original FFVII and saw the flashbacks about Cloud and Zack, and I thought "Damn! This story is soo good it could be a game of its own!".

And Crisis Core delivered, in my opinion.

Also that soundtrack... Love this tune in particular.

This thread is making me want to track down a copy and get a battery for my psp3k. I remember enjoying the shit out of it and the powerful ending.

That kinda was my biggest problem with the game. Making Zack into the handsome skilled Forest Gump of the FF7 universe instead of just the simply noble guy that got beat by Sephiroth (who Cloud then beat on his own), and killed by 2 grunts. It turned Zack into some sort of super baddass god that makes people safe in saying;

instead of how I originally viewed his character and roll in FF7 itself. A "weakling" that had good personality that showed how broken Cloud's mind was to choose as who it would assume the roll of.

Played through when it released originally, and was the reason I bought a PSP. I've recently purchased a PSP again with Crisis Core, but I'm hesitant to play through again, as I'm hoping for a CC HD in the near future. I'd rather wait as I honestly can't remember a lot, apart from the battle system. Decisions...

I'm the opposite of that. Personally, Crisis Core realized the vision I had of Zack when I played the original game. Watching Zack's Lego model do the squatting animation, being all optimistic and friendly. I mean, he also had to be a badass if he made it to SOLDIER First Class.

Zack's characterization during Crisis Core was as if Square-Enix had read my mind.

This and FF X are literally the only ones that made me actually cry. And it's funny because after playing VII I already knew the outcome but was hoping they would retcon things. It hurt. Especially
when the reels start breaking down to signify his brain death
 
Terribly told story.

I hope they remake this whole scenario as an episode to FF7 Remake. Delete the useless characters (GENESIS).

I love the soundtrack though.
 
The only good thing to come out of the FF7 compilation. Genesis was a terrible character, but Zack being likable and fleshed out as he was makes up for it. Hope this makes it on PSN someday, whether as a PSP game I can play on my Vita or a PS4 remaster. It deserves it.

I agree. Zack (the very brief glimpses of him we see) was always a headstrong, friendly, outgoing guy and his Crisis Core self was the perfect reflection of that.

I totally understand people being upset with the over the top ending and key word: hero nature of the story, but the first is a matter of taste (I very much enjoyed the ending to this game and the playable segment was amaaaaazing) and the second I already commented on on the first page, where the background story is more interesting that the story about becoming a hero, which is really only a vehicle for Zack to experience the things that he does.

And yeah, the soundtrack is amazing. The World's Enemy is the creepiest rendition of One-winged Angel there is in a game. Moonlit Wandering has that melancholy country vibe to it, perfect for Zack's escape from the Shinra mansion. Even better is that this particular track was in the Last Order OVA, which, by the way, is mostly canon to this game and shows events that the game itself skips over, the two biggest ones being Zack on the highway and showing more of the truck scene at the end.

Seriously, watch Last Order if you liked this game (and haven't already)

One last comment about the soundtrack and the ending: perhaps a divisive opinion, but The Price of Freedom is the best damn final battle music in any game, ever
 
Game had a ton of potential, but the obnoxious, shoehorned fan service, repetitive side missions, and quickly tiresome combat and materia systems really torpedoed it for me after the first few hours. And Genesis.
And that joke of an ending cutscene, but I'm willing to give it a pass because I know it's just not my style.

Basically, it feels like it was designed first and foremost around the idea of pandering to people who were hungry for anything FFVII, and secondly for fitting into a commute. Zack was cool though.
 
One of my favourite PSP games. I wish the Turks had more screen time though. The beach side quest was pretty amusing as well.

Oh, of course I watched The Last Order. I really liked it, despite some of the retcons bothering me quite a bit. But overall it was a pretty cool movie.

And yeah, The Price of Freedom is just incredible. I recall having a tear running through my face when I was playing the final battle. I knew how it was going to end. I knew I could not win this battle, and Zack knew it too.

I understand people liking the original FFVII version of Zack's death. It was cold, fast and to the point. But being able to control Zack during his final moments was better in my opinion. You could feel your character moving slower and slower, his animations look more tired as the battle goes on. You know the fight will stop at any second and you will be gunned down to your death. And you still keep fighting.

You as a player want to keep Zack on his feet for as long as possible. The level of connection this game achieves is off the charts during this scene.

Indeed. That mechanic at the end, wow. Such emotional impact in a way that a regular sad story could never convey. It made you feel the damage...
 
I remember being with my brother watching him beat it, both of us tearing up watching the ending completely silent

Game was a great experience and the CGI cinematics dazzle me to this day.

It just has some dumb design decisions, though. I wish the combat was a little more KH-esque (aka, I wish you could do combos instead of selecting things one-at-a-time). The DMW was just unnecessary, along with the stupid "ACTIVATING COMBAT MODE" and "COMBAT RESOLVED" with every damn battle. Plus Genesis was annoying.

Solid 8/10.
 
Great game and one of the greatest endings ever, especially as someone who never played the original FF7 before playing Crisis Core. That ending came as a huge shock to me.

Edit: I really hope Cissnei is in the remake. Probably one of the few characters I like from that universe.
 
I hope this is remade at some point in the future. I can usually find some redeeming quality in Square games, but I can't really find much good to say about this one.

It was definitely nice looking and while most of the music was annoying there were some good tracks. But the gameplay, pacing, dialogue, story, characters, and side missions were just so poorly implemented and/or written.

I've tried to get into it multiple times since its release, hoping that maybe I'll appreciate it more as years go by, but every time I replay it I can't help but think about how interesting the first few minutes of the game seem, and then seeing how it slowly devlolves into what the rest of the game is.
 
I enjoyed Last Order, and although it flies in the face of a lot of things, how it ends is more true to FF7 than CC. Zack was just a man,
and a bullet to the head kills him as easily as anyone else.

Makes it all the more shocking.


OST was so good, especially the church music. Idled in there for hours.

Ah, the Burdened.
 
The best game on PSP. The soundttack was powerful and seeing Zack's arc gave more context to the trauma that Cloud endured. Zack was the fucking man.
 
I liked the slot machine thing a lot, I'd always get Tseng's. "I'm trying, I'm trying!!" Was drilled into my head for years to come after i beat the game lol. Zack is actually what im most excited about for ff7r, maybe we'll get a nice chunk of crisis core retold in the remake, its what im personally hoping for.

Also i liked genesis... And loveless... Crisis core is my 2nd favorite ff game(9 being #1) and zack is my favorite ff character easily.
