RTTP: Sega Genesis & Sega Saturn *Action game explosion*

I played so many genesis and saturn games I can barely remember any names.

Notable games

Saturn
Dark Savior (See my avatar)
Sega Rally
Exhumed
Daytona USA

Genesis
Landstalker
Zero - the Kamikaze Squirrel (!)
Sonic & Knuckles

I'll probably have to revisit Dark Savior as well, since the first time I played...I was young and had no idea what was going on lol. The whole parallels thing was lost on me.

Dark Savior fighting system was horrible. It was like a really bad fighting game. I couldn't stand it. Still the game was beautiful at the time, and everything else was good.

Oasis > DS :-P

still waiting on re-release for this one, one day.

wait no longer! :)

The Saturn version is definitely better (I own both). The Saturn version has less slowdown, more character moves (two to three new moves), the "Father" character moves a bit faster, and a remixed redbook audio soundtrack.

The Playstation version has a couple of things over the Saturn version though, like a great PCM soundtrack (chiptune, not streamed off the CD, which I prefer) and transparencies.

Interesting. I guess I have to track down the Saturn version now.

It most certainly was deliberate. A small sampling from Albert Odyssey:

This was just a quick two NPCs in the second town. Working Designs localizations for Saturn games were pretty lulzy.

Heh ever seen Arc the Lad collection's book? The section on Diekbeck...had to do a double take :P

Hmm...being able to play great japanese Saturn titles with little to no language barrier is great...but the shipping times are crazy. Or at least it seems that way...guess they've got to go through customs.

Hey OP, if I remember correctly Metal Slug on the SEGA Saturn is known to be a good port but I still believe the best (legit) way you can play the game is on PS3, with NeoGeo Station.

As for my personal recommendations...
I'd go with something like

- Megadrive-Genesis -

Alisia Dragoon
Bare Knuckle/II/III (if you didn't buy it yet on 360... Still, playing the real deal is well worthy imo)
Contra Hard Corps
Ex-Ranza
Gaiares
Gunstar Heroes
Mazin Saga
M.U.S.H.A.
Strider Hiryu
The Super Shinobi II
Thunderforce III and IV

- Saturn -

Astra Superstars
Burning Rangers
Cotton 2: Magical Night Dreams
Dead or Alive
Guardian Heroes
Keio Yugekitai (Keio Flying Squadron 2)
Real Bout: Garou Densetsu/Special
Sengoku Blaede
Silhouette Mirage
Steep Sloope Sliders
Street Fighter Zero 3
Virtua Fighter 2
X-Men vs. Street Fighter

Action Replay 4M plus and Panzer Dragoon II Zwei just arrived, but what do I do with these...title cards? Seems like it fits around the cd case, but i've never owned a JP Sega Saturn game.

When they sold CD games in Japan, those things would have been wrapped around the end of the case, under the shrinkwrap, so technically "complete" for those systems should ideally include that. I agree though, they're not particularly important, apart from a curiosity basis.

I always flatten mine out and put them in the case.

Saturn collecting is pretty rad, but I've gotten to the point where most everything I want is absurdly expensive. I'll probably wait on buying more stuff until after I finish my Dreamcast collection, but man, seeing the Elevator Action Returns box made me want to start going through my list again...

i lay them flat and put them inside the manual with all the other inserts. it's a bit of an OCD thing that i always have to put them in the very centre where the booklet is stapled together. :P

Looks pretty cool that way.

Anyway on to the game itself. Panzer Dragoon isnt really known for it's story (at least the rail shooters in the series), but I like the universe, and made up language...of course playing in japanese makes it harder to keep up with whats going on (why are my enemies shooting at each other). Game started off kind of slow when riding the child dragon, but shortly after hitting Episode 3, the game really took off. Gliding through the forest and having to be aware of all sides while fighting off bio-mechanical(?) monstrosities, culminating in a showdown with a giant skeletal primate that shot acid blood at me, all while listening to Panzer's trademark unique boss music.

Died once due to my controller having a faulty L button and not realizing that you could still dodge things right in front of you (the boss uses a claw swipe attack at certain points), but i'm glad the game isnt as easy as it seemed during the first two episodes. Happy to add Zwei to my library...but i'm not sure if I could go back to the first game (are the graphics/gameplay rougher than II?).

Cotton 2 looks really fun, and yeah i'm keeping my eye out for Darkstalkers games.

cotton 2 is amaaaazing! most people claim boomerang is better, but frankly it's just far too manic for the controls and the size of the sprites/hitbox and i find it obscenely difficult, but cotton 2 is just right. make sure you put in the code that unlocks the ability to map autofire/command shots to the x/y/z buttons on the pad though!

It's weird, as atrocious as the framerate and draw distance was, Daytona USA on the Saturn was my favorite version of the game right up until the Xbox 360 arcade better than arcade perfect port. CCE and the Dreamcast Daytona's were both botched in one way or another, but the controls and the exaggerated car physics in the Saturn version felt just right. Shame that the Saturn version suffered from so many graphical problems though.

Best localization.

Vic Ierland lurks in these forums from time to time. It would be nice if he could chime in on some of his old WD localization decisions. Though If I remember correctly, they would throw in dialog like this to spice up what would normally be bland localization text. To be honest it wasn't bad, but not everyone's cup of tea.

I still really loved their localization for Popful Mail on the Sega CD. It's a great game if you can find it. But sadly, it doesn't come cheap online. As great as it is, I don;t know if it really deserves the high prices that it commands on Ebay and such.

i expected this in first post.

Ah, I never really saw the love for this game. It always felt so clunky and unrefined to me. If you really want one of the best beat em up experiences on the Saturn, it's Guardian Heroes all the way.

Though a more obscure gem would be Three Dirty Dwarfs, which always plays somewhat like Guardian Heroes as well. TDD was a pretty great 2D beat em up on the platform that is worth checking out, if you can find it cheap.

Astal was a decent Saturn Platformer. Clockwork Knight 1 was rather ho-hum and didn't age well, while part 2 was a bit better.

Bug 1 and 2 are also quirky as hell. Not the greatest, but not the worst.

Also Shinobi X is worth checking out. While the games takes on a bit of a Mortal Kombat style with its digitized sprites. The game plays better than it looks. It's not quite up there with the epic genesis games. But it is still great.

And of course all three Streets of Rages on the Genesis are infinity superior to Die Hard Arcade as well.

Mega Turrican was pretty cool on the Genesis as well. But what else could I list that hasn't been mentioned already?

Is burning rangers import friendly? I want to pick it up at some point, but the english version's prices are pretty high. For complete versions anyway.

Edit: EU version of Shinobi was the one with the Richard Jacques soundtrack, right?

Not really. You get a lot of spoken directions that tell you where you need to go. I'd say it's actually one of the least import friendly games, since there's a lot of dub VA.

Outside of MKR, it was one of the last great Saturn games.

Guardian Heroes is solid, but I actually think the XBLA version is the better version to play. The Saturn version is loaded with severe slowdown throughout most of the game.

I assume Shinobi X is Shin Shinobi Den? I have a JP version of that on hand, and man, is it cheesy. It does actually play pretty well, but the FMV focus is bizarre indeed and feels incredibly outdated (in a fun way). The opening FMV is bizarre.

I don't actually think Saturn is all that great on the platformer front. I have all of those games you've listed and, really, they just don't hold up. Sega was so focused on doing something different with its games at the time that they all failed to deliver the kind of gameplay you expect from a classic platformer. Tempo 32x falls into this as well. Astal does have great audio and a nice look, but the sprites are too large and the gameplay is a bit dull and simple.

That said, I actually do think that Rayman on Saturn is the best version of that particular game and one of the finest platformers of that generation. Well worth playing.

Silhouette Mirage is also a great game on the Saturn as far as platformer/action games go.

For the Genesis, try grabbing Shinobi 3 and Contra Hard Corps. I played those games fairly late already (Saturn/PSX era) but damn did I still have a blast

Dynamite Deka definitely has slow animations that can make it feel super clunky in comparison to pretty much any 2D game in the genre, but I'd actually say it's way more refined, focused, and skill-based than Guardian Heroes. Not really surprising, given that it's an arcade game.

Whoops, I meant to type Shinobi Leagions. It's been so long since I've played Legions that I couldn't remember what the subtitle for the game was, and did a Google search and it came up with Shinobi X. Which was the European version. It's not a terrible game, but yeah, the cheesy FMV production values make it feel dated. It doesn't have the same charm as the digitized graphics in the original Mortal Kombat games, but the cheesy FMV-ness can still make it amusing to play. Though it certainly doesn't compare to the Genesis titles.

And I agree with Guardian Heroes. If you own a 360, it does make the Saturn version obsolete.

I agree with that too. For a console that was boasted as the best hardware for 2D graphics of that generation, there really weren't many memorable platformers. Most games tried to be unique or try something new, and ended up aging badly or being quite awkward. Mr. Bones on the Saturn was definitely one of those games. Such an awkward platformer that didn't play very well at all.

I have never actually played Silhouette Mirage to be honest. Though I would imagine that it was one of the legitimately good platformers on the system. There was also a great version of Mega Man 8 on the console. And yeah Rayman had the best Console version on the Saturn.

But I guess the Saturn will always be remembered more for its 2D fighting game ports and its overhead/ sidescroller shooters.

Dynamite Deka definitely has slow animations that can make it feel super clunky in comparison to pretty much any 2D game in the genre, but I'd actually say it's way more refined, focused, and skill-based than Guardian Heroes. Not really surprising, given that it's an arcade game.

Maybe I need to replay this one again, if that's the case. But I don't remember it playing particularly well at all. Dynamite Cop (or Dynamite Deka 2) on the Dreamcast was a better game IMO, but neither one really stands out as being very memorable to me.

By all means get Shinobi 3 for Genesis.

shinobi2.jpg

I decided to go on a huge Gen kick a few years ago after missing out on it during the 16Bit days and found Shinobi 3 to be maybe the best action game on the system. It's just so freaking good. I've played Revenge of Shinobi and Shadow Dancer and this one blows them away in my opinion.

You're off to an awesome start with Rocket Knight and Bloodlines though, those are fantastic. Especially Bloodlines. Also, if your body can handle it, Contra Hard Corps is great too.

I always preferred the steeper learning curve of Revenge of Shinobi over Shinobi III's faster gameplay and better visual presentation. I also feel that Revenge had a better soundtrack than III as well.

I'm not really suggesting that Shinobi III was a terrible game or anything. It wasn't. It was equally awesome in its own right, and one of the best action platformers on the console. But I always liked Revenge just a little bit more.

I miss my Saturn SO MUCH, reading through this.

Dragon Force was my favorite, but it's super stupid expensive now..a lot of Saturn games are pricey now.

Road rash 2 and jungle strike are must haves. Never understood why the mechanics of the strike games never were revived for this gen. Different objectives that could be done in different order to make it harder/easier.

i would buy shinobi 3, but im trying to avoid buying things i've already got on collection discs...unless the actual genesis version performs/sounds better than Sonic ultimate genesis collection.

Got Castlevania Bloodlines and Revenge of Shinobi. Going to just focus on those 2 plus Rocket Knight. Havent really gotten that deep into either of them, but I will say that they are really challenging...so much more than stuff today's standards.

Extremely refreshing :D

I thought Dynamite Cop was better as well.

Better frame-rate certainly helps but the expanded move-set and looser controls really make it work.

Both are excellent.

Bloodlines is better than Super Castlevania IV.

shhh it's a secret

The one thing I cant get used to in Revenge, is the lack of a dash. Played Shinobi 3 on the genesis collection first, so it cant be helped...

Revenge is one of the few games on digital distribution that is still worth owning a physical copy for, if you are a collector. The version included on compilations and digital downloads is edited from the console versions. There are actually five different versions of the game (six if you count some of the audio changes made in the Sega CD version). The original plus five different revisions. Mostly with art changes to avoid copyright infringement.

You might even get lucky and end up with one of the earliest versions with Batman and Spider-Man. :P

Also Speaking of Spider-Man, I always liked Spider-Man vs the Kingpin. But who knows how well it aged? X-Men 1 and 2 are pretty cool as well.

I ordered the Japanese Megadrive Revenge cart last year and was lucky enough to get the original version.

so blatant

The only version I have of the game is 1.01, which I suppose is still pretty common. 1.01 removes the red bandanas and hair from the Rambo like enemies to make them look less like Rambo. It also removes Batman and replaces him with a generic devil man like character.

Back in the day, before I even knew about the other versions, I always assumed that the devil character was Morbius from the Blade/ Spider-man universe and Spider-man was battling him, for some reason.

I also have the version that was released on the 5-1 Sega CD compilation. This version is based on revision 1.04 but with some very minor audio differences. All the games on the 5-1 CD disc had altered audio, Super Monaco GP had improved voice samples and better music in the Sega CD version:
