This movie...

I saw it in theaters a decade ago and wondering how it's aged. And frankly for the most part, it does a pretty good job. In some ways, it's still pretty amazing. The way it tears apart so many film cliches, Tom Cruise at his most ludicrous, etc. That stuff is still just so strong.

Some of the more outright offensive stuff is mostly played as a joke against Hollywood itself which saves alot of it. It atleast helps elevate it a bit, but there are still some mixed marks once in a while. Also I generally think Jack Black is completely ignorable in this movie. Like by far the worst part. But contrast that with Matthew Mcconaughey throwing a Tivo at a rocket, and the movie largely avoids disaster. I wish they had more to say about the blackface thing, especially considering the recent whitewashing conversations.

Overall, this is still a solidly funny movie. I'm glad I revisited it, despite its warts.

Probably like the third greatest movie ever

I don't know how I missed this movie in theaters, but when I finally saw it on video it was one of the funniest comedies I'd seen in a long, long time.

It had the right amount of ridiculous raunchy humor (didn't go too overboard like I felt a lot of movies were doing around that time) and it was a fantastic action movie parody.

It's so good. One of the few recent comedies I can rewatch and still laugh through. People single out Tom Cruise and RDJ, but everybody killed ot tbh and after this and Bernie, I want Jack Black to be everything Adam Sandler couldn't be.

I haven't seen this movie in years, but I remember thinking it was one of the best comedy movies I'd ever seen when I first watched it.

Movie owns. Feel like it never got the spotlight it deserved because Ben Stiller was in a weird place star-power wise. One of my favorite comedies.

I remember liking it back then, but I have come to hate it so much solely because of one picture:

Holy shit, I get furious just looking at it. I will not listen to a word by anyone who uses it as an avatar.

I'm black and didn't realize that that was Robert Downy Jr until I saw the movie. He looks completely black. It had me in stitches every time he was on screen.

Iv never met anyone who had a problem with that role in person.

The only problem I had with the movie is Jack Black. For a third person billing his character was wastefully written. More of a side character than a main character.

It was bad when it came out and I can't imagine it has improved with time. An unfunny non satire crammed with deeply shitty product placement.

AAAAND you lost me.

Made the sorry mistake of getting it super cheap on bluray, thinking it would be just as good as it was back then.

Nope. Nope. Nope.

One thing I like about Les going ballistic on the phone was how calm he was when he said can you find out who I was talking to.
That man gives zero fucks.

You should give it a re-watch as I HATED it when I saw it in the theater and now it's in my top ten comedies of all-time.

Funnily enough, this also happened with Hot Fuzz and now it's my favorite comedy of all-time, with MacGruber a close second.

When I first saw it, I found it extremely valguar and trying hard funny, which makes sense because I was a sheltered pussy back then. Now, I think it's EASILY one of the top 5 funniest movies ever made. Like every single line said in this movie is hilarious. It's so goodddd.

I remember being disappointed when I first saw it in theaters but the film is now one of my favorites.
I blame my initial disappointment on Pineapple Express being released only 7 days earlier and setting the comedic standard too high. (No pun intended)

Best movie with RDJ post-KKBB

Shit was hilarious in theaters. The fake trailers and marketing at the start and just all the fuckery. Even Tom Cruise bothered to try something different for a change

I died when we got all those corny ass war monologues from Nick Nolte and you find out he's a fraud

I loved it back then but haven't seen it since the theater. Will have to watch it again one of these days. Steve Coogan was so good -- I also remember getting a kick out of Danny McBride.

"Whatchu gettin' at with the booksscripts SPIT THAT SHIT OUT MAN" as Robert Downey Jr. tries not to lose it at how far he's pushing it at the camp fire scene is hilarious. Apparently, he was intentionally seeing what type of things he could get a away with in the movie as the director told him specifically to be as ridiculous as possible.

Just watched it a couple weeks ago. And yea, Jack Black isn't funny anymore. Far better at Drama, actually. Or maybe i'm just way older than I used to be. Or both.

"I don't know what type of gun it is. I just remember the sound it makes when it kills a man."

The movie kind of outstays it welcome a bit but it is way better than it has any right to be imo.

Bumping because I noticed this was on Netflix. I don't think I'd seen it since the film released, but I'd argue it absolutely holds up.

It's no secret that pretty much the only thing Hollywood likes more than a feel-good movie with some minor social justice rah-rah message is movies about movies. It's catnip to them. (It's why one of the weakest films Scorcese ever made got nominated for a ton of awards... hey, Hugo.) And Tropic Thunder is the absolute perfect lampooning of all of that. From diva actors to guerrilla directors, film executives who think they're the shit, lying about military service to seem more legit, and the worst of American ignorance in global affairs.

I think on rewatch the stuff that stuck out for me most (aside from small roles I missed at the time—hey, it's Yvette Nicole Brown as a secretary! Hey, it's Carina from Chuck!) was that despite being sidelined by the big names in the cast, Jay Baruchel and Brandon T. Jackson have the best parts of the movie, as the actor just trying to do his job, and the closeted rapped trying to come to terms with the schism between the personality he thinks he has to display in the music scene and his actual self. He also gets a great exchange with RDJ about whitewashing roles that's a better argument in a minute than most think pieces manage in 1000 words.

Love this movie, has some really amazing lines.

"Same thing happened to me when I played Neil Armstrong in Moonshot. They found me in an alley in Burbank trying to re-enter the earth's atmosphere in an old refrigerator box."
