Rumor: Retro Studios New game for WiiU using new engine

Retro is one studio I do not want a new IP from. Their character design has been awful, especially for Metroid.

Also they should hire Android Jones again.

What? Maybe for people, but their creature and armor design is some of the best in the industry, especially among Western devs

The MP games had some of Samus' coolest looking suits

Thats probably going to be a unique opinon.

Although its not one that I wholly disagree with. I thought the original prime samus character design was amaziballs.

Thought everyone past that sucked.

Monster designs I felt have varied from fantastic to... unremarkable.

I have yet to get tropical freeze, I dont really want it right now, but the character designs for that look pretty fantastic for their aim.

I will say with full confidence that their environment design has been nothing but the top tier best.

Their creatures and their iterations of existing characters are fine to great.

Their NPCs are woeful. And you know they're going to fill the next Metroid with NPCs because... well it's an AAA game! It has to be done! Or some arbitrary reason.

The perfect Metroid game would have Samus and no one else.

I'd be pretty happy with them doing Star Fox, keeping up that Rare 2.0 thing and all. Maybe we'll be lucky enough to get a surprise new IP at the end of the Wii U life cycle like N64 did with Conkers and PD

One can dream, right!

I remember reading somewhere about Retro having hired some pretty great artists who have done big games (at least in a macabre and fantasy sense) though I don't know if they're still there.

I would be all over a new 3D Donkey Kong platformer.

New Engine = Vehicle Engine = New Vehicle = Submerine = Sub C = Startropics U confirmed guys!

Am i the only one confused about the "StarTropic revival" hype? I thought it
was just some Zelda clone (not to offend anyone). Maybe im missing something.

How did this ever started?

I'd love to see which ones!

To be clear Retro have absolutely wonderful artists, it's just extremely difficult to create new NPCs for franchise which do not need them or are actually hurt by them due to their nature. So maybe they would have a better go of it on a brand new IP.

Someone from Naughty Dog who worked on Uncharted

New IP please. I love me some Metroid Prime, and wouldn't be upset if it ended up being another Metroid game, but Nintendo is in a perfect place to experiment right now.

New engine? Interesting because Prime and DKCR share the same engine (or at least one evolved from the other)... maybe this is a soft confirmation that it isn't Prime.

hoping for a new metroid game that builds upon the mechanics introduced in the metroid blast Nintendoland game.

Something like that, but obviously far more polished/sophisticated and with a graphical style we would expect from a metroid game

More likely it is just something more modern. That's why I'm thinking this isn't confirmation of something that is not DK.

There's not enough Zelda-like games.

That said I'd like to see what Retro could do with the franchise.

If a new Metroid does come out this year (I doubt it but we'll see), I hope Nintendo also has another smaller unrevealed Wii U title for this year because I really don't care for Metroid :\.

Oh God.

The bodysuit npc's. So freaking horrible.

What if...

What if the next metroid has no npc's, no exposition beyond an in game breifing while landing on the planet

'Bad things are happening here, these things here *picture* they are bad, unbad things with your gigantic arm cannon, and blow the fucking planet when you are done'

And is simply a single, massive map, with no other human beings on it, no data rooms to be contacted by radio assholes who wont shut the hell up until they ruin the game by putting where you have to go on the map, and progress is dictated entirely by the player figuring out how to use the power they found, and what areas they have not been to on the map to figure out where they are supposed to go and how they are supposed to get there. And if you are too damn stupid to do that, then you dont get the satisfaction of getting anywhere.

Wouldnt that just be... so nice.

If it was Metroid they'd use the Metroid 3 Engine with higher quality assets since the Wii and Wii U have similar architectures.

DKCR 3 would be such a fucking waste of a new engine.

I would be crushed. I want a new DKC really badly, especially after how good Tropical Freeze was.

The cpu does not typically render graphics in systems that have gpu's.

And Im pretty sure the wii u doesnt have a fixed function gpu that relies on integer math.

This 'runour' is really, a stupidly stacked bet.

At the very least, if you want to do something, anything, with overhead more demanding than a 2d sidescroller, you are probably going to want to pretty much scrap that flipper/hollywood proprietary rendering engine, rather than trying to tweak and expand on it.

I'd very much like to see a 2D Metroid by Retro. They've already shown they're more than capable with the Metroid Prime trilogy and the DKC revival. Best in both worlds, I hope we see Metroid 5 in stead of Prime 4.

I'd love if they were secretly working on zelda U. But in reality I'll most likely get whatever they're working on.

Whatever it is, I'll probably be buying it. They have developed phenomenal games time and time again. Looking forward to this one as well (bonus points if it's Metroid)

I'm not sure there'd be a point to make a brand new engine if it is DKCR3 and they intend to release it on the Wii U

At this point, a new engine would likely be needed for either a completely different game or for new hardware or both.

Unless of course they intend to take DKCR3 in a completely different direction.

As for Metroid, they'd need to make a new engine for it regardless as the Prime engines are outdated and they'd need to redo it all for new hardware.

I would MUCH rather have another 2D metroid than Prime, but they wouldn't release it on the Wii U, would they?

Imagine something like this in glorious HD 60fps

If they truly loved us they would release it on the Wii U. I'd eat a baby for a 2D HD Metroid on the Wii U that surpasses Super Metroid.

That would be extremely short-sighted of them. The fact wiiU falls back to a virtual wii does not make the native wiiU hw into native wii hw. Fundamentally different GPUs, single core vs SMP and largely different memory hierarchies are among the few things that can make building performance pipelines for wiiU quite different from their wii predecessors.

Whatever engine tech Retro are working on now is a cross-gen wiiU / nintendo nextgen effort.

Maybe Paper Mario? Intelligent Systems seems pretty busy, and I really want another entry in the series a la TTYD. Probably just wishful thinking

Shhh I'm trying to make up any excuse possible for retro not to work on metroid so I'm not disappointed in the end.
