Rumor: Retro Studios New game for WiiU using new engine

I don't even care what it is, all I know is that it will be amazing and I'm excited.
I'm still scared of a new Metroid, I don't want Another M, nor do I want any of Other M's characterization of Samus to be in the future games ;_;

I think Retro and NOA have heard the clamouring for a Retro-made Metroid.

Nobody in their right-mind, even at Nintendo, thinks Other M is better than the Prime series. Nintendo looks at metacritic.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's a first-person Metroid, but not necessarily a direct Metroid Prime sequel. Prime 3 wrapped the trilogy up nicely.

I would like a grimdark Mach Rider reboot please.

This would be nice too. Would be a lot of work but a western dev could probably be the best to do it.
Could probably be better than that Mad Max game too.
Would be awesome if they kept Mach Rider a woman as well.

Better ilumination and atmospheric effects for DKCR3! Despite the greatness of DKCTF, the lack of proper ilumination kind of kill the atmosphere created by Wise's music

Sorry that this is slightly off topic, OP.

Could you share more information on that Kid Icarus Wii project you mentioned earlier in the thread please?

I'm curious as to what you discovered on Kid Icarus Wii. I actually worked with some of the folks on the site that originally revealed the concept work.

I'm working on it. I have basically everything I personally ever wanted to know about it now. If you have any questions, I will relay them to my sources and attempt to get answers. I am not making any promises, but I am attempting to get in-game materials (which has proven very hard so far).

In the near future, I will publish an article with everything I know about it on Unseen64 :)

Holy crap LiamR you're the Unseen64 guy?
Mad respect for your work.

Thanks!

Between Splatoon and codename Steam I've had enough new IP from Nintendo this year, open the old was chest and bring back a classic!

Mach Rider baby! Or Metroid Prime 4!

My gut tells me it'll be one of the following: 2.5D Metroid or 2.5D Megaman (worked out between Capcom and Nintendo). After Tropical Freeze, Retro has proven masterful at 2D art and design.

ugh no.

I hope it's a good game. I didn't like the first DKCR game they made, but Tropical Freeze was the first DKC game I ever liked so kudos to them for managing to finally convince me about an entry in the series. And of course I think the Metroid Prime games are amongst the best games ever made.

All that said, I'd like for them to work on something brand new and not related to any old characters. The only exception I'd make is if they started working on a Star Tropics title.

Wasn't Metroid Pirme's engine based off the UE 2 branch? And I remember older news stories about Retro getting early builds of UE4 up in running on the Wii-U as well. Or am I mistaken?

Any specific reason why you didn't like DKCR? Because in my opinion TF is "just" a DKCR 2.0 with better visuals and a much better soundtrack. I thought Returns was already amazing and TF even improved it (I'd give them 8.6 and 9.2 respectively).

Donkey Kong 3 would be a locked-in masterpiece. Donkey Kong is now to Retro what Metal Gear is to Kojima. Metroid - been there, done that.

I have not enjoyed any DKC game before, including DKC1, 2, 3 and DKCR. I never liked the feel of the games, the way the character physics are, never enjoyed the endless shit to collect, and some of the level design could be obtuse in the older games. They flow better in the Retro titles I think. But for DKCR, shake to roll was just abominable, just shit gimmickry through and through and I despised that there was a whole world wasted on mine cart levels. I hate mine cart levels.

But DKC:TF was different in that finally I think they struck the right balance. Levels feel just the right size, there's an incredible flow to levels that is basically like a puzzle if you know what route to take and how to time your jumps you never have to stop for time trials (there's lots of levels like that in DKCR, but I think TF perfected it), there's not a whole wasted mine cart world, there's no shake to roll. And the weight of everything finally clicked for me in this version, though as far as I can tell that's not much difference from DKCR. But it just worked here for me.

Edit: Oh yes and the Wise soundtrack and the HD visuals just made it an inherently superior foundation. Did not care for the music at all in DKCR. Combine all these improvements together, and finally I think they created a good DKC platformer.

This echoes my thoughts. I loved both Retro-made DK games, but felt Tropical Freeze seemed almost overrated in some respects. I loved it too, but also had more or less the same reaction to DKCR. Playing in HD and having Wise compose was nice though.

The level design was actually pretty different; more about empowering the player with the roll-move, rather than screwing them over with traps for trying to rush through a level. And the difficulty put more faith in the player screwing up badly at simple things, rather than placing constant hard obstacles throughout half the game.

No, retros engine had nothing to do with unreal 2, it was nothing some person on the internet identifying words that are commonly used commands such as bake or maybe cook, that is from a common metaphor that compares programming to cooking, in the source code of both, and assumed that an incredibly common thing being shared by two seperate companies meant they were using the same engine.

I guess. I kind of felt DKCR had more aesthetic variety, but TF had better levels. Having a significant amount of levels in TF locked off due to collecting might've turned off some people; your mileage may vary (I 100 %'d both games regardless as they're totally up my alley).

Oh. Thanks for clarifying.

even if TF sold 5x more than it did i doubt Retro would do a third DKC in a row... pretty sure they've been planning "something else" for awhile now

The clamoring for a new DK or a new Metroid Prime are sensible, but feel kind of...easy. And personally I hope whatever they work on doesn't go that route, because I would love to have a Retro Studios game turn out to be something that I actually...love. A whole new engine for another DK doesn't make a lot of sense right now when streamlining their games-pipeline is something Nintendo could really use right now to speed up development times, so whatever this is, it's got to be something new for the team.

New IPs can draw some interest, but can also be a risky prospect. I personally would be most curious and excited to see them tackle some sort of a series-revival project along the lines of what Kid Icarus Uprising went through: take something from way back in the day that some pleasant nostalgia lingers for but never took on long enough to set any really strong "ground rules" and just use that world-setting as a rough blueprint to build a new experience around. StarTropics and Mach Rider are both good examples and have been mentioned, games like Urban Champion, Balloon Fight, and Wild Gunman are often-referenced but rarely updated. The most intriguing possibility for me right now would be handing them Nazo no Murasamejou, given its reference in Nintendoland, Takamaru apearing in Smash 4 and being mentioned at one point as a possible character, and the game itself finally appearing in the 'States in digital format, visibility for the series has been quietly building for some time now.

Plus, thematically, I'd be fascinated to see Nintendo hand the reigns of such an Eastern-imaged series to one of their Western developers. I doubt that they'd actually go through with it but boy what an interesting experiment it could turn into.

Retro hasn't let me down yet and I'd love to see what they could do with a new engine. I wouldn't even care if it is a new DK. They've done a great job thus far so another would be guaranteed greatness.

New engine , Zelda delayed, it seems NX could be influencing some WiiU games. Wont be surprised if that new engine could be a standar for next Nintendo console.

Mach Rider, Star Tropics, or dare I say Ice Climbers would basically be a new IP.

I don't have faith when it comes to western dev's making new IP, especially when they are geared for an 'E' or 'T' rating.

why not Retro tho? have they not proven themselves to be allowed to just completely do their own thing?

Based on what? Do you have even the vaguest inkling of proof? Like, literally anything other than your gut
If Nintendo is actively working on the next home console, it is not farfetched to assume the next console could be part of development in one way or another. On the other hand, we have no proof, so it is conjecture at this point.

I would MUCH rather have another 2D metroid than Prime, but they wouldn't release it on the Wii U, would they?

Imagine something like this in glorious HD 60fps

No thanks.

Would rather have another shake-up on the scale of Metroid Prime.

I liked Tropical Freeze but I don't know how much more they could do with it, at least on the same console. A downloadable expansion would probably be just as good as a boxed DKCR3.

I love Metroid Prime, but I think Retro made a pretty complete statement with their trilogy. Prime 4 feels kind of... safe to me. Bad as Other M was, I appreciate that it at least tried to have its own identity. Metroid is getting due for a new game but I'd rather see it done by another studio, perhaps for the 3DS.

So, I guess what I want out of Retro is a New IP.

I hope its Metroid, but hope its a new game, not Prime 4. I want them to move the timeline forward.

I assume when people say "Prime 4" they don't necessarily mean canonically Prime 4, but a first person Metroid game by Retro as established by Prime.

Ultimately I don't care what Retro do. They've made five games and I've loved each and every single one of them. Their quality standard is ridiculous, and I have a deep respect for them reviving two of my favourite SNES era IPs in significant ways. Metroid Prime is, to me, no less groundbreaking relative to its franchise than the likes of Mario 64 and Zelda. And both DKC games are a blissful return with a standard of level design that eclipses Rare's work.

Desire has me wanting a fourth Prime game, even though they're sitting on two Kongs and three Metroids, if just because we're in a new hardware generation and I'd like to see what they can do with it for the Metroid franchise versus already having Tropical Freeze. That and it's natural to gravitate towards security when Nintendo is unpredictable with franchises; I don't want another Other M and I don't want Metroid to be left to die. Ergo, Retro is the safe bet.

That being said I'd also be very open to them exploring a new franchise or working on an existing franchise that isn't DK or Metroid. In this scenario though I'd hope it wasn't like either Metroid or DK, in that not a first person adventure shooter and not a platformer.

I would be interested in hearing people describe what kind of new IP they would like to see Retro do (I'm guessing AAA shooter or action/adventure?) since a new IP isn't inherently something that draws goodwill/hype. (see Codename STEAM)

I'm leaning towards shooter if only for the vain hope of a fun and inventive multiplayer FPS back on Nintendo consoles. Want to relive my Goldeneye/Perfect Dark memories with friends. :p (I'll stop treating Retro like Rare 2.0 now)

The problem is when you create a new IP like Codename Steam you have to advertise it. I think I saw one article about STEAM before it came out and it was talking about needing amiibos to get FE characters in the game. The article was a negative tone too because the character data was IN the game and only needed to be unlocked with the amiibo.

Thats not how you introduce a new IP. I've never seen a commercial or advert on a website for the game either.

As far as what kind of new IP I would want. Action RPG.

I joked about Raven Blade earlier but going back and looking at the early concept videos now I really want them to revive and expand on it. It could really turn out good.
