Rumor: Retro Studios' next game is a new "brand"

Something new is an interesting remark, it's hard to say what genre it could be though. Hoping for some sort of RPG since Nintendo doesn't really strive in that department.

A new brand? lol, thanks IGN. Such a wonderful insider source.
IGN aren't the ones who made a casual little remark into a giant NeoGAF thread. They didn't report this. Don't blame them because GAF tends to make breathless speculative threads out of vague tweets and casual podcast chatter.

But they already announced X for Wii U and we are getting FE X SMT too.

I'm hoping for another series revival personally.

You say that as if GAF is a news site. It's a discussion board - we discuss things from ridiculous to confirmed.

The reputation in the eyes of the gaming media hasn't changed what it is, so yes, there are threads about vague whispers.

You are welcome to discuss what you want! But don't give shit to IGN for reporting vague nonsense like "Retro is working on a new brand" when they didn't actually report it. Someone casually mentioned something on a podcast and GAFfers decided to speculate.

I'd be worried about the games qualities as a racer if it tries too many different things. For example open world gameplay kills course design by default.
I'm all for new franchises and mixing up old ones, but only if it works. And I can't imagine a way an open ended F-Zero title would work. Of course everything goes for random spinoff titles, but people have been craving for a legitimate successor to GX for so long, it'd be depressing to get a weird hybrid after all these years.

If you think about my description aswell as reading the Captain Falcon Wiki you can see that a Captain Falcon (or f-zero) spin off is plausible due to the history of Captain Falcon as an officer in that police force i mentioned. So he has a full career BEFORE the F-Zero. So a game based on that would not be a racer.

As far as a proper F-Zero i would be satisfied of a remake of GX with some upressed gfx and 64 players online aswell as local multiplayer with online. That being said i would not put such a studio as Retro to do such a game. Rather Shinen or Sega.

Well IGN is a news site. We're gonna put a bit more weight in what they say - even if just on a podcast.

That said, I do see where you're coming from.

As much as I loved Star Tropics as kid, I hope it's not that. This new IP or "brand" needs to be something that the mass market can eagerly consume and that can help the Wii U. An HD revival of a niche action-adventure IP, as awesome as the two games were, isn't going to do that.

They could turn star tropics into whatever. Why do people insist on it being the same nes games?

I've always liked Peer, classy guy and he's been at IGN ever since the N64.com days. Miss the old Peer/Matt C days.

Would Peer be one of the E3 week judges? He may have already played it.

StarTropics, GAF. It's gotta be StarTropics.

Everything about this "new" title says StarTropics to me. The supposed scope, the environmental artist hires, the bosses, the rumors pointing to a franchise resurrection. It has to be StarTropics.

As much as I would love to see another Prime or an obscure franchise revival (Star Tropics) I HOPe Retro is working on a large-scale title with valuable western AND mainstream appeal. The Wii U could definitely use more western exclusives to start the ball rolling for more third-party devs in the West. If this means yet another dirt-brown themed space shooter, provided it can sell lots of systems in the West, so be it.

Another Prime would be awesome though

When they say new Brand,

It reminds me of multimedia franchises like Pokémon, kind of like how Level 5 has toys, anime series, games, etc.

Hope it's amazing...(please not a shooter!)

I would expect a new "brand" to be an all new IP / franchise.

You would be surprised how many people do not know what "IP" even is so that's why im guessing he said "brand" instead

If they made a western and mainstream games, i hope they will make it with some platforming and some good exploration. Not a Gears of war or Halo.
