Rumor: Retro Studios' next game is a new "brand"

New brand means new IP or new combination of Old IPs to form a new one. Mario Kart was a new brand in the mario franchise, just as smash was a new brand, even though it included all old IP. It could also mean all new IP.

The way he said it in the video meant like he intended for it to mean new IP.

As much as I would love to see another Prime or an obscure franchise revival (Star Tropics) I HOPe Retro is working on a large-scale title with valuable western AND mainstream appeal. The Wii U could definitely use more western exclusives to start the ball rolling for more third-party devs in the West. If this means yet another dirt-brown themed space shooter, provided it can sell lots of systems in the West, so be it.

Another Prime would be awesome though
I dont get it. You talking about sonething like dead space 3 arent you?

Peer says they're working on a new brand, but that doesn't mean it's a new IP. He could mean a brand that's new for them, something other than Mario Kart, Metroid or DKC, but something that is already an existing Nintendo series.

It could go either way based on the comment made in the video.

Would Metroid Prime fall under this category, being the first non-2D Metroid?

Faxanandu?

Whatever it is, I assume it's pretty close to release. They hired testers recently, their former lead designer left the company around the same time, and their other recent hires point at them already gearing up for their next title - it seems a bit late in the cycle to hire several designers and (senior) engineers at this point.

Care to elaborate? :)

A "brand" implies a name, design element, etc - so wouldn't a "new brand" mean something entirely new?

If they were doing something like "Donkey Kong Prime", that would be considered a re-brand in a sense.

Honestly they can use the phrase "new brand" and mean anything by it. Fans are just obsessive in trying to find proof to their speculation.

I'd really love to see an I.P. (preferably an adventure/rpg) from Retro with similar art-style like Dark Souls and Infinity Blade.

Whatever it is, I still hope it's something that allows Retro much more creative freedom than DKCR did. Either a new IP or something like Mach Rider or StarTropics that might as well be a new IP.

Shenmue Remake with YU Suzuki supervising, Nintendo taking Shenmue exclusivity and Sega moneyhatting.

dat cupboards.

BELIEVE

Golden Sun U would be amazing. I will now have my hopes set high, and I will more than likely be very disappointed, cause everyone knows this will never happen.

Speaking of Camelot what have they been up to? Only handheld games?

I would like to think Retro can make or develop two games at a time so a brand new IP or revival should be shown hopefully for release this fall. Plus show me the sequel for DK as a Wiiu title to be released next year!

This thread's got me thinking just how wonderfully, cozily, warm and melty nice that EarthBound X StarTropics could work. Yo-yo wielding 90's kid heroes, quirky off-beat world and inhabitants, submarines, evil aliens/creatures, lots of other stuff I'm not thinking of off hand. Yes. yes.... I'm h..a..p..p..p...y....

I can't grasp the true form of my hype!

Wow, EarthBound X StarTropics would be awesome!

Mario Tennis 3DS - last year
Mario Golf 3DS - this year

they're a one game at a time-studio.

Man I would love for them to develop a Mario Tennis or Mario Sports game for the WiiU.

Mario Tennis on GameCube was one of the best games on the system and one of my top 5 most played games. Make it an online game and it can be huge!

I could never get into Wii Sports and their tennis game because of how much I had loved Mario Tennis. Give it to me Nintendo!

Well, We'll be getting those types of games starting mid next year and onward after Nintendo blew the load of their A-class games. Then we'll see all those cool small(er) titles again.

New brand = Old IP revival.

Star Tropics!

Yeah I am reading like that too... They worked on 2 brands (3 if you count Mario Kart), so this is a new, diferent, one.

Don't know if its star tropics though, but that would be very awesome.

Apologies if this has already been answered, but why would they choose to rebrand Mario Kart NOW of all times?

Don't they need a safe system seller for the WiiU?

When was it decided that the use of the term "brand" OBVIOUSLY meant a reimagining of an old series? Such wild speculation. I would imagine the term was used as (an admittedly strange) alternative to IP, as in, a new IP.

I don't know though, I've still got my money on Metroid Prime 4. Maybe out of hope, maybe because I recently completed the trilogy for the first time and the series is fresh in my mind, maybe because we should be due a new Metroid soon.

I'd be disappointed if they were making DKCR2 because I feel like EAD or Next Level Games could do that, whereas no one so closely associated with Nintendo other than Retro can make anything like Metroid.

MP4, or a gritty, "grown up" new IP is my wish. Having absolutely adored DKCR though I wouldn't boycott a Retro sequel, I'd just feel as if there was nothing more, for loss of a better term, hardcore coming out of Nintendo any time soon.

Brand is confusing as it could mean new IP, or a different take on an existing IP like they did with Metroid creating the Prime series.

Its not Mario Kart they just helped with tracks on the 3DS version to get the game out on time.

Nintendo always uses the same teams for their games, they have a Mario Kart team that has been doing a great job, no reason to put Retro on Mario Kart. If they wanted them to do a racing game they would put them on F-Zero.

"brand" and "IP" are often used interchangeably. There are subtle business difference, one can argue, but they are pretty subtle and I'm not sure Peer would make the distinction.
