Rumor: Treasure might be done making new games.

Does anyone know if MS owns Radiant Silvergun XBLA? If they don't I wonder why it isn't on Steam yet. Seems like a no brainer for getting more money for minimal effort.

I don't think they do, and from what I remember, Treasure was planning to port another game before this one on PC.
Plans changed.

I'm pretty sure MS does own the publishing rights to RS360, even though Treasure owns the game proper. Same deal for Bangaio DS/360--Treasure owns the games but the publishing rights are with other people and who knows if or when they expire or if Treasure's in a position to get them back.

They should stay as far away from the MN9 guys as they can. Even Double Fine is a better choice, plenty of guys of guys knowing how to make successful kickstarters out there.
Iga is probably the closest for them.

The people who ran IGA's campaign are almost exactly the same people who ran the MN9 campaign, even the developer is the same.

Sin & Punishment: Star Successor was their swansong, in my mind. Their magnum opus, the big masterpiece that combined their love for genre shifts, dope boss fights, and challenging action game scenarios in one smooth package.

RIP in peace Treasure. Platinum Games will have to carry the touch for crazy Japanese action games now.

Sin & Punishment 2 was a strange accident. Due to the Wii Remote's strangely arcade friendly control scheme and an audience that enjoyed "pick up and play games" a few developers began creating (House of the Dead: Overkill) or porting (Jambo! Safari) various arcade games to the console.

Sin & Punishment 2 was one of those games and by far and wide took it the most seriously. Ignoring fighting games, it is the last great arcade type game ever made and is the greatest ever as well. There will likely never be a game quite like Sin & Punishment 2, it was like a game made in an alternate reality where arcade gaming never declined.

What's Tetsu Okano up to lately? They should make a successor to Astro Boy: Omega Factor.

Just buy this.

Sad news, even though they created some awesome games as far as I'm aware they weren't huge sellers.

Such a shame from an obviously talented group...here's hoping they use there talents in a new team/company

What? Maybe in an alternate dimension where Cave and Afterburner Climax didn't exist.

S&P2 is far from a masterpiece. The original was a much better made and paced game. The sequel has high highs, but quite steep lows.

These are sad news. I was hoping for a third S&P fixing what didn't work in 2. Their last best game is Gradius V.

I meant high production arcade games. Afterburner Climax was from 2006 and not that good from what I have heard.

The sequel is better than the original in every way. I agree the original may have a bit tighter pacing but that is due to its short length.

you heard very very wrong but, well, not like you can buy it now.

man this thread's making me want to dig my 360 out of the closet.

Also I picked up Sin and Punishment 2 for like 3 dollars a long-ass time ago but I haven't actually been able to play it - I have a Wii U but don't own a Wiimote, lol.

The first S&P is considerably more balanced and well measured than its sequel, working far better as an arcade shooter and overall being a better game.

S&P2 shines on some boss battles and certain stages, but most levels have huge pacing problems and suffer from repetitive sections, and that hurts moreso in this type of games.

I don't think it's a bad game, but it's far from being that arcade masterpiece people make it to be.

Had the same reaction when I listened to the ep last week.
But one thing I was not clear on.

They announced a game like a 6 months ago with Nintendo for the 3ds right?
So that game is in development right?

Yeahhhhh. It did sadly feel like Gaist Crusher was the end of Treasure. I'm surprised they didnt do a Kickstarter or something, but I guess the people that made Treasure what they are can't be arsed anymore.

I also think they were sadly past their zenith, never getting close to the highs of their Mega Drive, Saturn, N64 and Dreamcast work.

I've never heard of this developer. What did they make?

They're ex-Konami guys who excelled at making flashy action games: Gunstar Heroes, Ikaruga, Sin & Punishment, Gradius V, Mischief Makers, Dynamite Headdy, Astro Boy Omega Factor, Radiant Silvergun, the list goes on.

I think you confused them with someone else.

I think it's a lot worse than you make it sound. Ignoring Gaist Crusher (I'm not sure how much of that is actually Treasure's lead) I don't believe they've released an original game since Ikaruga in 2001. They're released some good stuff since, of course -- I feel Astro Boy GBA is especially underappreciated -- but it's been a long, long time since they've been, shall we say, creatively viable.
They've done quite a few other games since then.

What? Treasure was like 3 guys? I had no idea, since their games were usually really high quality.

I should be sad but honestly I could never get into any of their games. They sound awesome in theory but end up being boring in practice.

They were the PlatinumGames of their day and will me missed.

they made Global Gladiators?
huh

Depending on the project, the staff would increase or decrease. From what I've read over the years, anyway. I would love of a definitive history written down.

*hugs JP MD copy of Alien Solider - the only game to set 68000 processors on fire*

These guys made some of the greatest games ever. Gunstar, Guardians, BangaiO, Mishchief Makers, Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga.

This shit is sad man. I hate hearing it.

They're like the Platinum before there was Platinum.

They make hypnotically cool action games.

I've been finally getting into Platinum games recently and the comparison is very fitting. Stylish, over the top, very arcadey, and mechanically interesting.

Alien Soldier especially. That game had moves like canceling incoming bullets, hover in mid air, waking on the ceiling, dashing, and picking up HP at full health gave you a supercharged dash where you could instakill early bosses if you got the timing down, not to mention being basically a boss rush game.

For sure. They held it down way past the Genesis. Gunstar and Alien are balls out amazing, but it was the Guardian Heroes, Radiant Silvergun and Silhouette Mirage era that made me really imprint Treasure in my brain and love them forever.

Actually seeing my earlier comment I'll retract the statement, or rather tone it down. The 32 bit titles didn't put the 16 bit ones to shame, but they trumped them.

The 16 bit output is solid and I don't mean to take away from that, but I really feel the later output was even better.

I still go back and play Dynamite Headdy from time to time. They really are a unique developer and if the rumor is true, will be sorely missed.

I wonder what the logic for not getting more of their content on Steam/Gog is. I can't imagine that through all of their back catalogue there isn't something worth sorting through the legal stuff for.

A lot of indie/doujin developers owe a lot to these guys. Legends in their fields. At least nowadays we have plenty of games "inspired by" the games they made in the past. I just hope somebody gets "inspired" one day to make games similar to Sin & Punishment 2 and Mischief Makers, which are my two favourites.

Used to play Gunstar Heroes soooo many times in the past and Dynamite Headdy. Still wonder whatever happened to the director of Sin & Punishment and Mischief Makers, Hideyuki Suganami (NAMI). And to Mitsuru Yaida (Yaiman) who programmed/lead loads of classic games, real legends those two.

I also loved their sound team's work too, such weird and unique tunes they made. Really underrated work. Will miss these guys. A lot. Don't get games like these anymore, that's for sure (at least not with the same style). Mischief Makers will always forever be one of my all time favourite video games and S&P1 and 2 will forever be some of the best rail shooters ever made.

Cuphead will hopefully give me my Treasure game fix...

Thank you. I can't say I've heard of most of those, let alone played any.

I meant high production arcade games. Afterburner Climax was from 2006 and not that good from what I have heard.

If you didn't like After Burner before then you weren't gonna like Climax because it's an After Burner game through and through. That's why it's awesome.

The rumours circulating at the time suggested Treasure was unhappy with their deal with Sega for those GBA games and that it caused a lot of friction internally, so there's no guaranteeing they'd even want to work with Okano again (and it's not like they need him, they have plenty of team leads internally).

Well that sucks. :(

I have this, but I had no idea it was anything like Astro Boy.

I'll have to check it out.

I'd love more of their games on Steam, but it's not like Ikaruga set the world on fire or anything. I can understand why they might not want to make the investment in further projects, especially since Ikaruga is already probably their most celebrated game.

(But hey, Sega, port Guardian Heroes XBLA anyway, please. Also add GGPO.)

Isn't that actually rather high numbers for a shump?

:'(.

They are such a great studio and love a lot of the shooters they have made over the years. Gunstar Heroes, Astro Boy Omega Factor, Sin & Punishment.......lots of amazing games and now they are not making any more new stuff :(.

Treasure is one of the best JP gaming studios out there, so hopeful they move on to great things or are happy with the future they have laid out for them :). They deserve it for the great stuff they made over the years :D.

This is something I've always felt in the back of my head was the truth, but never wanted to admit. Likely wouldn't have gotten nearly into gaming if it wasn't for them.

Their record was pretty fantastic, and they have very few poor spots to their name. The industry is truly worse off without them.

This one hurts : (
