Saints Row Demo in stores now!

Just got this today (WORD EM UP, PURGE) and it is great fun. Completely GTA++. Beautiful lighting, detailed models, and the sound is a stand out. I LOVE the bass rumbles of passing cars. A stroke of genius that really hammers home the gameworld.

One minor gripe, I wish the cars would slide a little when they brake. They're a little too literal. Also, the weapons should have been mapped to the d-pad. As in Kameo, it's HELL of frustrating to get those in-betweeners.

I forget the exact controls, but use the handbrake and you'll get the slide you're looking for. At least, that helped me. The regular brake is far too literal, agreed.

So I picked this up and I'm having some fun. I'm a little bummed that I can't get that glitch to work so that I can get past the demo barrier. I keep punching SUV's and they hit me hard but never push me through. The closest I've gotten was getting a load screen and being sent back to some other location. Anyway, so far I'm loving shooting in the car mechanics, they feel more natural than GTA. What I don't like is the choppiness when I'm in a fast car. I can be going 100 mph but it feels like I topped out at 30 mph. Otherwise I love the Havok engine (Mercenaries come to me) and the explosions are very nicely done (heat haze is some of the best I've seen). Should be a fun time killer title like the GTA games are, and killing random folk feels so much better now that they have weight to them.

Does the $5 go towards a pre-order, or is this a stand-alone sale?

I'm not sure about that either. I got the demo at best buy today also and my receipt saying $5.00 pre-sell video game Saint's Row on it. I'll just take the receipt back in with me the day they get the game in.

Oh... and maybe its already been mentioned, but if you get the demo DVD from Best Buy, probably EB Games/Gamestop also, the DVD has a free theme and 5 free gamer pics to download to your 360.

I've gotten through twice after trying for 2 hours. the otherside is worth it. I feel bad for doing something I shouldn't be, but in the same way it feels good. bombs worked for me, throwing them behind the cars so they floor it and guess whos in the way?!??

I played this demo for 5 hours last night. I can't even remember the last time I played a full game that much in one sitting.

Yeah, it's not perfect (fix that framerate! Make it tougher! There'd better be hills and jumps in the full city!), but I'll tell you one thing: I won't be able to play any of the old GTAs again after this.

It's a complete copy, totally shameless, but it's really, really good at what it does.

So I dont have this, but I got a kick out of the fact that the name of the game seems to have changed online. Instead of seeing friends in the Saints Row demo, it shows them as playing the Saints Row preorder disc.

I guess MS was getting phone calls about how to DL the demo :lol

i'm suprised it took a company this long to make a carbon-copy of GTA. the demo's pretty great, and everything's really well excecuted, but the cutscenes and tone of the game are just BAD. it's just such lowest-common-denominator stuff it's not even funny. it doesn't seem to match the polish of the game itself. this one makes me wanna see what happens with GTA4...

awesome list if you ask me, and should extend the life of the game considerably. They're also balanced well between modes and mission types.

So true. It's possibly the most blatant, shameless clone I've ever seen, but Volition really has added a lot of impressive tweaks and details.

I completely agree - it's embarrassing, and really unfortunate in an otherwise well-made game.

where is the blood in this game? please tell me that little blood burst when you shoot them isnt it... please say it was shut off for the demo.

Park your car so that the driver's side door is parallel to the barrier, leaving a two or three foot gap in between. Then just double tap Y so that you dive out. If your character gets out thru the passenger side, you're too close, and if he doesn't go thru the barrier, he's too far away.

I've been having fun with the demo, but I do agree that the atmosphere feels extremely dull.

My feelings exactly. It's embarassing.

Frankly, my approach to this has been the polar opposite to the GTA games, the storyline so cheesy I don't want to go through it all. The free-form gameplay is ultra-polished and incredibly fun, so I don't feel like I'm missing anything.

Sorry, blood puffs only - I've seen several interviews where the Volition rep comments on it directly, as if it was a conscious decision. I still wonder if Volition is still reeling from the heavy editing The Punisher went through to avoid an "AO" rating, and decided to keep it to a minimum in Saint's Row to avoid problems with the ESRB.

Then again, Saint's Row allows you to do multiple kinds of drugs, so who knows.

nabbed the demo, it feels like a polished gta 3, I woulda rather had a polished san andreas (air travel, motorcycles). Ill gamefly this and madden and "keep it now" one of them.

Probably be madden, unless saints row multiplayer is insanely good...

And this is what always sets GTA games apart from the copycats. Saint's Row is a nice acheivement, and it shows just how many ways next-gen has been waiting to improve the genre... and I think I'll enjoy the full game. But serious rival to GTAIV, this is not.

the GTA missions even ones where you kill other gangs didn't seem fun at all, this one does, maybe it's the ragdoll maybe it's the shooting/aiming scheme, I'm a sucker for it and I'll buy.

No one will give a shit if the game is as violent as Soldier of Fortune due to the fact that you can take drugs in the game. Hell, I should buy two copies at launch, because this game is going to be banned or something.

This thread is a testiment that ALL games need demos on the 360 - preferably early - hope every dev takes note of this...

Sounds like it may actually be worth playing then. My GTA experience is pretty much driving around for 10 minutes, seeing how many cops I can get on me, blowing some shit up, and turning it off.

yeah I keep hearing how many people weren't even interested in the game before they got the demo.

Nice, this is what I wanted to hear

:D

I'll be picking this game up when I buy the Xbox360 in the future (whenever I do, the game will probably be out by then). Watching the vids of this game i've been very surprised at the graphical detail etc. It will be my GTA fix until GTA is finally out.

I also have to admit, I was a doubter too and totally was appalled at what seemed like a blatant ripoff. But hey, what does it matter to me if the game rips off GTA? :p

Hell yeah - especially games you know you're going to get need early demos... I'd kill for a Dead Rising demo, especially since it's coming later to Europe than the U.S....

i was comparing it to past GTAs.

Saint's Row gameplay is a marked improvement over last gen GTA, but that's not really a fair comparison. Now if saint's row was on PS2 or Xbox then it would be a fair comparison. I'll wait and see what Rockstar cooks up on the X360/PS3 before proclaiming Saint's Row the superior franchise.

As much as I want to stop playing until the full version comes out, I just can't help myself! So many fun/satisfying/amazing things happen every time I play the demo, largely due to the excellent use of Havok.

While wandering around, I came upon a near head-on fender bender, and a pedestrian that had been knocked to the ground during the collision. He stood up, walked up between the cars, and started making threats: "You better believe the police are going to hear about... " Right then, both vehicles involved in the fender bender peel out and take off in the same direction, pinning the pedestrian between them and cutting off his sentence with a guttural grunt. They made it about half a block away with the poor guy's arms and legs sticking out and flailing around before they separated, releasing the pedestrian to skid and bounce along the pavement, killing him.

In another situation, I blasted a stopped van with the shotgun, setting it on fire. The car behind him freaks out, quickly backs up, and tries to speed past the burning van. The van explodes when the fleeing car is right next to it, but the car doesn't explode - it gets sent skidding sideways on two wheels right towards me, with the driver (killed by the blast) dangling out the window with his arms and head dragging on the ground. The car comes to rest right in front of me, where the driver finally slides out of the window and flops onto the street. It was so incredibly satisfying and cinematic that it couldn't have been planned any better... and this is just the demo!

I still have my doubts about the story, humor and overall tone, but the gameplay is more fun than I could have hoped. If co-op wasn't restricted to structured missions, this could have been one of the greatest 2-player games ever.

uh, it's the only comparison you can make. also, innovation and evolution in games/genres doesn't happen in sync with hardware generations

no it really doesn't - because GTA games HAVE good gameplay, Saint's Row just improves upon the formula. It so shamelessly rips every last aspect off that the foundation is in place for them to add all the necessary next-gen flair that this genre has sorely needed. The same exact improvement will be felt in GTAIV.

And in the end, the difference will be the presentation and story and just how intelligent it manages to be with the material, and that is something that seemingly continues to seperate the GTA series from copycats.

Note, you shouldn't take that as an insult to Saint's Row - I was a hater before, and playing the demo changed my mind about it. It's a very solid title now and I definitely want to play the full game.

Yeah I'm not sure about the humor in the game...but, and I don't know about anyone else, I can't drive by a Wendy's now without thinking "Freckle Bitches".

It's a great game with very little originality, but it definitely does everything better than GTA did. Of course this isn't a slam on GTA, but more of a jab at last gen technologies.

poor guys, they're trying too hard to mimic that clever, humourous vibe that GTA always nails. something tells me there might be a couple saints row jokes in GTA4, heh.

That's arguable. Yuppie and the Alien is about as witless as Freckle Bitch. Okay, maybe not AS bad. But at least I don't have to listen to unfunny Freckle Bitch commercials over and over again.

considering the release dates, i don't think you'll find a fair comparison between the franchises. GTA IV is releasing over a year after Saint's Row, so that wouldn't be fair either. If anything, fans now have two franchises to play and hopefully devs will stagger the releases.

I understand where you're coming from, but Volition seems to be completely missing the point of satire. I agree that "Yuppie and the Alien" is pretty weak, but it is at least an attempt to poke fun at how ridiculous and vapid your average sitcom is. "Freckle Bitch" isn't a parody on Wendy's, it's just vulgarity with no wit or irony behind it - like what a 14-year-old boy would call Wendy's to his friends to try and be funny.

And I wholeheartedly agree with you. I was just kind of pointing out that Rockstar doesn't *always* nail the comedy aspect of things.

The humor is pretty tongue and cheek, but yeah, the freckle bitches thing came out of no where. In the game, there's a freight company and their slogan is "we come faster." :lol
