Sakurai on why Ridley isn't playable in Smash Bros.

This is all a matter of putting in effort to properly scale down a character that Sakurai just doesn't seem to care to commit to for whatever reason.

How realistic does this sound to you?

Are you absolutely certain that if this effort were taken the result would be successful?

Didn't stop him from doing it for other characters.

Most of these heights they just pulled out of their ass.

*snort*

All the Metroid canonical information seems to say otherwise.

The official, Sakurai-approved Metroid Zero Mission manga says NOPE.

A mindless monster that somehow commands an entire race of space pirates, flies a command ship, and built a robot in his own image.

All of that stuff never appears in-game which is the only thing that matters in the end. When I play Metroid, Ridley is just a boss that's on my way. That's it. You don't see him scheming or having any actual characterization. Hell, he's not even the final boss in any of the games unlike Ganondorf and the other playable villains. It says it all when fans have to use a manga of all things to try to say otherwise.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure his trophy in Melee specifically states that Ridley is much more intelligent than one would be led to believe.

He does fly a ship in Zero Mission :P

And fully talks like a human and even had a look of (very brief) sympathy on his face for 'lil Samus after his raid on the colony (official manga).

Well, parts of the manga are clearly canon but he's never spoken English in the games. It should obviously be assumed that he can talk since, you know, that would be an extremely important skill to have for leading an entire race. Although Prime had Space Pirate logs, the Space Pirates themselves didn't speak English, either. They were clearly talking, though. I think the idea of Ridley speaking English would be silly just like Bowser speaking in Sunshine was, but I wouldn't mind if they had his speech translated in text through some kind of universal translator in Samus' visor.

Are you saying Sakurai isn't a top notch game designer or developer?
I really don't think he is. It's hard for me to say that considering that he did make one of my favourite games of all time and I can't help but respect his dedication and work ethic, but I feel he's just too out of touch to be really up there.
Are you saying Brawl was broken to the point of being unplayable?
Brawl is broken far beyond the threshold of what should be considered acceptable for a game of its scope and budget.

Laser_Lock_Falco_Brawl.gif

Even though this is something that you never really see, it's the best thing I can think of that demonstrates in gif form how this game was not competently designed or playtested whatsoever. It's one of many, many, many pretty bad oversights.
With that said, this response seems to be less about Brawl being "bad" and more about people being mad about lack of Ridley. Even if we say Brawl wasn't good, Smash 4 is top notch.
Lack of Ridley is just one thing out of dozens. Why are custom moves such a pain in the dick to get? Why does the idea of having duplicate custom moves even exist? Why can't you even use those custom moves in For Glory? Why doesn't For Glory have platforms? Why is the online matchmaking so limited in general? Why can't you disable the annoying as shit stage bosses that no one likes? Why are the stage bosses so annoying as shit in the first place? Why doesn't your running momentum carry over into your jump? Why do Samus' bombs still not explode on contact? Why is Ganondorf still getting the shitty end of the stick? (He doesn't even need a completely new moveset, but I think he at least deservers a serious running animation.)

The reason for all of these things? Sakurai logic. Things that are obvious to nearly everyone in the universe are apparently not obvious to him.

You might want to play Super Metroid and Metroid Zero Mission.

In Super Metroid he retrieves the baby metroid and brings it back to his lair. His lair is full of monitors, like a command center.

In Zero Mission he commands a space ship and has a robot that he built in his own image in order to strike fear in his pirates while he was away.

I feel like I've written those same paragraphs hundreds over times in SmashGAF. I guess I really DID know what Sakurai was thinking. Go me!

I would hesitate to call him a bad designer, but he has racked up an impressive list of questionable design decisions over the series. I also think that the picture he paints of himself obsessing over every detail can be as detrimental to the final product as it is to his health.

Don't remember the last time Ganon did a warlock punch in a Zelda game, or Luigi the green missile, or Captain Falcon basically any of the moves in any of his own games, or Fox any of the moves he has. Your argument is flawed, as there are many characters that do not play how they're supposed to when looking at their own games. Ike in Brawl was a slow and heavy character, in PoR he is one of the fastest units in his game IIRC. Ridley can still spit fire, and do a tail sweep and jabs just fine if he's a bit scalled down. He can also have a run and grab attack where he drags a person on the ground no problem, hell this could actually be a bit like Ganon's side b but with a few differences given how close Ridley grabs somebody. If Sakurai is apparently so creative then he should be able to create a way to make him plausible. Ridley's long arm reach could just be done by him supporting himself on his tail to "jump" and grab somebody or just use his tail to begin with. Ridley can be done, Sakurai just doesn't want to.
Ganondorf punches in Wind Waker, Green Missle reflects Luigis oddball personality, all of Falcons and especially Fox's attacks are based in their vehicles.

Ridleys whole shtick is being a huge boss.

Ganondorf punches in Wind Waker

Pretty sure WP vaguely references his Dark Energy wave thing from OoT before the actual fight begins. But that's the thing isn't it, if it isn't ripped from Falcon it's a super vague action or attack he did that doesn't really represent much. Unlike Koei who nails Ganondorf down to the letter on their first try.

Ew, you think? HW Ganondorf is the worst one in my opinion. It's like a completely different character than the one from the games. One with even sillier hair.

He gave a legitimate response and half the thread is still littered by whining. Lol

I think the reason is shit, and it's not the size thing, but the moveset thing. Ganondorf is the polar opposite of what he is in the majority of Zelda games. I will admit, it fits him. He's big and overwhelmingly powerful.

Bowser changes size for everything he's in, so that doesn't matter. He also has Charizard as a semi reference lol.

At the end of the day, I think what he's trying to say is that no one gives a shit about Ridley, outside of that certain part of the Smash fanbase.

He doesn't really say anything about moveset, right? I think the idea is that in every single appearance, Ridley is a huge intimidating boss. This doesn't apply to Bowser or Olimar or Ganondorf or any other playable character, just Yellow Devil and Metal Face.

That makes more sense.

At just he has a cool cameo in this.

I'm inclined to agree. He'd have to be shrunken down to be made into a feasible fighter, and at that point, would he even be Ridley anymore? Ridley's whole schtick is being a huge, intimidating boss monster with a large wingspan.

In all fairness, Capcom designed their own version of a Sentinel for their Marvel fighters. Fair point about Ganondorf, though.

I've seen that Sentinel in an older comic before, it's not exactly Capcom's. But the point is the same, it's not the same because there is not one Sentinel but many whereas there's only really one way Ridley is interpreted.

If the fans are requesting him, clearly they wouldn't mind him being shrunk down.

Shitty excuse.

It's not about whether they would mind or not. It wouldn't work.

Quoting myself now, from earlier:

me! said:
There is no set of changes that can be made to shrink him down and preserve this aspect of his character, particularly with the way his body is configured. Earlier there was a poster who claimed that it "wasn't impossible, but probably very hard." I assure you all that Sakurai's tried again and again to make him work, and it never did. You don't think he would try to get the character that's consistently on top of fan lists into the game?

How would you make his body work so that he didn't take up 1.5x the space that Bowser did? You'd have to crumple him somehow. Make his neck shorter, shrink his wings, remove his tail. How would he move without stretching himself out?

I swear, you've all convinced yourselves somehow that Sakurai really hates Ridley. Like, he would really rather have Duck Hunt Dog in than him. Jesus Christ.

People love Metroid yet you want to have Ridley, one of the most badass character in the series, reduced to a chibi character... What Other M did to the Samus's character wasn't enough?

I still think the Melee intro shows that he can clearly look both reasonable and playable. But I get what he's saying, it makes sense.

However, I take issue with this bit:
Sakurai said:
Instead of going through a lot of very convoluted hocus-pocus to make Ridley a fighter, I figured it’d be better to keep Ridley as it currently is, the correct way, and have it feel like a truly threatening presence
Can he really, at all, even a little, call Other M inspired Ridley 'correct'? Time to get someone else to handle Smash Bros.
Kappa

I still don't buy Ridley not working. Wierd proportions or not, Ridley is fucking cool. No point wishing for it, but playable Ridley would have been immense. He is a complete monster, it would have been an interesting contrast.

You know what? Forget it. Just talking to people here makes me hate the idea of Ridley being in Smash even more, because I can tell from how you are acting that no version of a playable Ridley would satisfy you.

My final point is this:

1. Sakuari's reasoning here makes sense. That doesn't mean Ridley is impossible, but very hard to do. Maybe more time was needed, maybe he wanted to focus on other characters, who knows? But the point here is that his reason does make sense.

2. I would like an accurate version of Ridley. I just don't see a scaled down Ridley as being accurate to how I see him. Maybe you all can like Ridley being small, I can't. I'd rather have him be that big boss character than a featherless chicken that can barely fly.

Won't stop all of you going "You just can't argue with us! We're clearly superior" comments but I'm already disgusted by the majority of the Smash community anyways.

EDIT: Actually one more:

3. Just because Ridley is not in the game, doesn't make Smash 4 "The worse one ever" or make Sakurai "The George Lucas of Smash". Get over your on big heads and stop equating everything to Sakurai hating you.
Lmao this post is hilarious

It's like a big nuh uh

Even tries to cover its ass for running away

Yet no reason for K.Rool? Nor any boss-like appearances in the game's stages? Must be saving it for Smash 5's reveal along with Inkling, Goomba, Dr. Lobe and Ryu.

Well DHD is actually playable so it's actually a possibility.

*shrug*

What I'm trying to say is clearly Sakurai would have done all he could to get Ridley in before even considering DHD. Ridley is a major character in one of Nintendo's most major franchises. Think about the level of fanservice that having Ridley playable would be. It would have blown the roof off the place.

This idea that they've spent thousands and thousands of hours making these games and never even once gave the idea of shrinking him down a fair shake is ridiculous.

Ridley would have had to have murdered Sakurai's entire clan to inspire this theoretical degree of hatred-- and even then he might consider it, cause it's all about pleasing the fans.

It can't be done. The mental leaps it takes to be on the pro-shrinking-Ridley-down-to-the-size-of-a-chicken side are seriously impressive.

There are probably countless discussion on Sakurai's team, more so than GAF, on how to include Ridley as a playable character. The conclusion is no. I mean what else?

lol at "accurate portrayals" but he's right in that Ridley in his current form can not work. People are comparing Bowser and Charizard to Ridley, but they are in fact different. Bowser and Charizard are far more humanoid and stocky when compared to Ridley. Ridley is eerily gangly and is a quadrupedal creature when on the ground. Some people are harping on "but Ridley wasn't that much bigger than Samus in Metroid!" yet ignore the fact that Samus is one of the biggest characters in Smash and Ridley was ginormous in Zero Mission.

Just watch this match with Ridley (49 seconds in). Do you really think this can be appropriately scaled down? It's clear that they put a lot of effort into Ridley's appearance in Smash 4. If they could make him work as a fighter, they would.

People really care about ridley? Or its just a complaint for the sake of it at this point?
I'd rather have Ice Climbers back than Ridley, like 100000000x more

The "well other characters aren't 100% accurate" response doesn't really fly. Ridley is not only defined in all Metroid games (save the first) as being several times larger than the player, he also has thin gangly proportions that would look bizarre and fragile at a "normal" size unless you removed his tail and completely changed his limbs and torso. He's also consistently defined by his ability to fly all the time and his extremely long reaching attacks.

Olimar, Kirby, and Bowser do not have this problem at all.

perfect response thank you

Is it true there is no Prime 3 music in Smash Wii U?

Sakurai really doesn't give a shit about the series.
If this were the case Sakurai wouldn't have made a Prime stage for Brawl. Or given Samus recolours based on the Prime 2 suits. Or made Dark Samus an Assist Trophy.

Seriously, there are several tracks of Other M "music", but none from Prime 3. Was really looking forward to fighting to the Rundas theme or the menu music. :(

The franchise representation is pitiful.

Ganondorf in Smash is pretty accurate in terms of personality and presence. He's the most ruthless and powerful character in the roster and can obliterate a character with a few hits, without the need of a sword. His size and all is OK too. Ganondorf in Smash as it is plays a very specific role that no other character has. Not even Ike, who is the closest character to that "sword Ganondorf" ideal and sacrifices raw power for range.

The moves are based on Ganondorf's portrayal in Ocarina of Time, who was more of a melee fighter, and Captain Falcon moves seemed like a good fit, since Ganondorf can cast dark magic on his body to power up his attacks. But even so, Ganondorf's appareances aren't consistent in the series, sometimes using a long sword, two swords, or no swords at all.

So using Ganondorf as to invalidate character portrayal is moot.

You could argue Dark Samus should've been a playable character, since there's plenty of moves that it uses to differentiate it from Samus, and Sakurai isn't exactly against adding clones either with Lucina, Dr Mario and Dark Pit.

Nearly every alt color Samus has is from prime. That hardly seems like pitiful representation.

Alt colours are good representation now? Those may very well have been just coincidences. It's not like you needed Prime 2 to come up with the idea of a 'white Samus'.

An actual alt costume or two from the Prime series would have at least been something.

He just doesnt want to add him. Full stop.

There are characters exactly with the same "problems" already in the game. Ridley has been infact, portrayed with so many forms, he could do whatever he wanted to be (melee's intro) and still feel like Ridley and eveyone would be happy.

He always can change ideas, he said the same about dogs and villagers last gen and howdy how, look what do we have now. Ridley doesn't got a chance for for DLC, thats for sure, but peple trying to see the future, qoting old sakurai or knowing what he thinks, please stop, with Sakurai you never know how he is going to change her mind some day.
