Sakurai on why Ridley isn't playable in Smash Bros.

As other people have pointed out, this reasoning is inconsistent with other character choices in the game. Charizard can barely fly even though he's a Flying type, for fuck's sake.

Why on Earth are we ignoring the battles in Prime and Prime 3? Meta Ridley's not a different character and his body shape is the same. In Prime 1 Ridley is able to fight well after his wings burn off and in Prime 3 he spends most of the fight grounded.

because I've not played Prime and Prime 3

I think Ridley has a good shot at being in the next Smash because they are really running out of characters to shove into this series. Just make him twice the size of Bowser and call it a day.

Nintendo confirmed to stop making video games after the launch of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

"But he wasn't big in the earlier Metroid games!"

You mean those games on hardware that couldn't handle giant moving enemies?

"But Bowser!"

You mean the same Bowser whose size really isn't consistent throughout the Mario series, even in modern installments?

"But Kirby and Olimar!"

Let's be honest here: if Melee hadn't said Kirby was 8 inches tall, would you have thought that he's that size?

As for Olimar, his representation in Smash is the same as in his game. He's extremely small, tossing around even tinier Pikmin. In comparison, Bowser already slightly clips though platforms on Battlefield, just imagine trying to make Ridley fit without looking stupid.

Face it folks... Ridley is TOO BIG!

so basically we need to contact retro and make sure they add a new character with the right proportions in prime 4 to make it as a smash newcommer

Noooope. SA-X when?

(Also there's a bunch of roughly Samus-sized biomechanical horrors/fellow Hunters in the Metroid series, particularly in the Primes)
SA-X is defined by having the exact same abilities as Samus. You can play SA-X already by selecting default color Samus.
because I've not played Prime and Prime 3
Fix that.

They already did. She's an assist trophy.

Anyhoo, I have a question?
Why is there always so much surprise over Rosalina's size?

Hasn't she always been huge. It's not like she was invented in 1990 and had a size chnage. She was huge in galaxy, bigger than Peach. And she's been big in every game she's been in I believe.

Why do people seem to be surprised about it? I'm confused...

Not really... The Prime series is treated like a spin off by NoJ. That's likely why Dark Samus wasn't added. It'd need to be in a mainline Metroid game.

I still think some higher ups at Nintendo want the Kremlings, or specifically K. Rool gone. Here's hoping we at least get Dixie as DLC.

He wouldn't even be a trophy if that were the case. Miyamoto suggested to Retro that they try making their own villains, so they did. Twice. And nobody cares about them. Now the president of Retro Studios, Michael Kelbaugh, is following the Kremling Kampaign on Twitter, and he has apparently been lurking Smashboards. I'd love to see Retro's take on the Kremlings in a future DKC title. At least K. Rool can stand on two legs unlike a certain other reptilian creature.

They shrunk her for 3D World (although she's still the tallest), so that may have thrown off some people.

Are we really going down the because Bowser shrank therefore Ridley can line again.......

Ridley is significantly bigger than Samus in Metroid. To display that in any sense of remote accuracy in SSB would be impossible. Samus is already one of the tallest characters in the game, she's almost already touching the bottom platforms of Battlefield just standing normally in the power suit. Any playable Ridley would have parts of him not just go through the platform slightly like Bowser does with with some of his spikes but would have significant parts going through it like his wings for example. Plus in the case of Bowser going through the platforms, Bowser does that while still maintaining a noticeable height advantage over Mario due to Mario being short in general. As i said earlier Samus isn't short, she's far from that. Displaying that height difference causes problems and based on that for the people saying that Bowser shrank from the Mario Games therefore Ridley can..... No

Bowser canonically in the Marioverse has had his size altered at will by Magi Koopa. His current size in SSB can be attributed to him doing just that. Ridley on the other hand does not have that loop hole to his size in the Metroidverse. Ridley has consistently been depicted as being clearly larger than Samus by a significant amount. So much so that when he picks her up in one hand the size difference is even more plainly obvious in that his arm is bigger than Samus. Yes there was the NES Ridley thing but considering that ever since then he has consistently been shown to be larger than Samus by a fair amount as opposed to in the original Metroid it's pretty safe to say that his depiction in the first Metroid in regards to size was most likely due to hardware limitations.

Am I misunderstanding you here or...

super-mario-bros-3-giant-land.jpg

Well those are still rather Mario sized. When they remade the first Metroid, Ridley looked like this.

That's how big Nintendo want us to think he was in the first Metroid.

I still don't think it's his size that's the problem, though. It's his proportions.

Size is less of an issue than proportions; reshaping him to be viable as a character, you'll end up with a character radically different from what Metroid presents.

I'm surprised no one's brought up the SSBM intro yet.

Speaking of which, I can't be the only that never saw him as being that small in there, right?

If we're talking about scale within a series, Smash already shit the bed with the Pokemon. Pikachu is 1'04" while Charizard is 5'07".

He's pretty small compared to Super Metroid.

I'm more disturbed by his lack of a tail.

there will only ever be two possible options for a third Metroid rep: Adam or Dark Samus

None of them are too big, and they're all playable in their own game

Ignore that shitty 2 that was drawn on, this was the best picture of all the hunters I could be bothered to find

Providing accurate portrayals of characters is something I want to pay ample attention to
Cause when I think of how to accurately represent Ganondorf, I immediately think of him having the same exact fighting style of a future race car driver.

Sakurai needs to get his head out of his own ass. He's legitimately making stuff up to make himself sound better.

OK, maybe I should have said "plausible". No-one likes Hunters enough for them to ever bring these guys back, at least not until someone makes good on the Prime 3 post-credits scene.

No-one likes Adam either, of course... but Nintendo do. Maybe Sakurai does! Maybe he's a monster too.

Idk, the Snowmads are pretty great. Love those guys.

I don't really blame him for Ganondorf. He hasn't exactly had the most consistent representation across his three appearances. Didn't help he no-showed the latest games to base an update on. I would be happy to get a Ganon character though!

Why do people have such a fetish for Ridley?

Because Metroid is cool and generally gets shitty representation in Smash.

And currently we have "Samus" and "Samus without all of her iconic defining features".

And Ridley just looks cool and could be a really unique character if they actually designed him around his size and flight abilities.

If you only have ocarina of time to work from, Ganondorf doesn't have anything other than chucking orbs and slamming to the ground, one of which he already does in Smash. And once a character is in Smash, they don't drastically change much.

Once Ganondorf started gaining more appearances, he evolved in Smash. Ganondorf is barely a clone these days, his differences with Falcon rival differences entirely unrelated characters have.

"It would be too much fun." - Sakurai

Not really. Think about it...how fucking fun was it seeing folks fly around the whole match as Pitt and run away fishing Smash Balls in casuals every single match? How fun was it ever to see folks spam huge moves that devastate folks when they got items that did that?

That is what an ACCURATE Ridley would be... a lot of flight and a lot of power. If they didn't do that then suddenly it would feel like a fake Ridley because it wouldn't really move, fight or feel as intimidating as it used to. Ridley was fast and hit like a meteor. Ridley has diving grabs and shit like Master Hand...Ridley would easily be a character with potential to create a broken gaming experience if they were done accurate to their source material.

Sorry...I don't care if you shrank him. Sakurai was right. They honestly should have been looking at Dark Samus for a character. Invisibility, hover, beams, dash in shoulders...very different from Samus and more do-able.

I can't really think of any possible attacks for Adam, except shooting people on his team or making a completely ineffective sacrifice.

Blue Samus Clone is the most likely pick.
