Sakurai on why Ridley isn't playable in Smash Bros.

charizard.gif

Also, Ridley predominantly fights on the ground in Other M, Prime 3, and the latter part of his Prime 1 battle.

I love your avatar. And yes, he is correct. In fact, for those who are paying attention, Ridley's inclusion in the Wii U stage has him fighting on the ground mostly.

But Golden Sun is a classic. They have the game on e-shop, so they could put the character in and people might check out the game.

I didn't know like half the roster when i first played smash 64.

Nintendo could've made the game far more diverse. Pokemon has far too many reps imo.

Isaac isn't old enough to be considered for Smash unfortunately.

Forget Ridley, the time has come for Dark Samus to shine:

She made Ridley her bitch, after all, just think of the posibilities, she could have ALL of normal, inferior Samus moves, but different colored..

He kinda is. He can run into people with the Blue Falcon, so I'm not sure what else they could do with him.
Missed the point. Captain Falcon's original moveset was not from his games. Accuracy was thrown out the window with this character's inclusion in Smash from the beginning. Making Ridley a character with slightly different flight behavior would be simple.

Gotta be authentic in a series where Samus Aran faces off against a small boxer, a yoga instructor, a duck-dog tag team, and an alien that runs from lady bugs.

Speaking of Samus, if Ridley is so powerful, why is it okay to play as the character who always beats him?

I can't really think of any possible attacks for Adam, except shooting people on his team or making a completely ineffective sacrifice.

Blue Samus Clone is the most likely pick.

each one of Adam's moves is a deauthorization command for your corresponding move.

so, if he does a forward smash, your forward smash is disabled.

All of those excuses are just that, excuses.

Charizard is in the game already. Don't tell me that Ridley is impossible. Just make him similarly proportioned to that.

If size isn't an issue, I say we fill the void left by Snake and invite Rex to the party.
It's got a variety of melee and ranged attacks, and it's bulky so it won't look skinny and weak when it gets scaled down. No long tail or wings, just a rail gun that barely extends past the front of the cockpit. The rail gun can be used for the final smash, and for his victory animation the cockpit can open up to reveal a tiny Snake.
is joke

Then you could say Smash 4 led you to knowing who Robin and Dark Pit were. :)

How do we know Olimar's size? I know he picks up bottle caps ten times his size, in his games, but for all we know he could be on a giant's planet.

Goddmanit. I actually feel lightheaded. This man truly is the George Lucas of video games. Please get him as far away from the future of this series as possible.

Yyyyeahhh, I kinda like what they did with the Ridley boss hazard, but with the way they changed characters here and there to fit the Smash Bros formula this does sound like a bad excuse.

But I guess I can stop expecting Ridley
and Sukapon
to become playable until someone else gets a shot at being director of Smash.

Rest does not cause a huge flowery explosion, Ness' special moves got canonically creative, Kirby would be the size of the insect, Luigi's Green Missile does not exist elsewhere, Zero Suit Samus was given jet heels, etc, etc. If you think Ridley is too big, you're not using enough imagination...... in a game where pretty much anything can happen.

I guess they still really want to honor Ridley's boss-size and menacing non-humanoid form for some reason.

I, too, am frustrated by Sakurai's constant neglect of the Starfy franchise.

The only thing stopping us from getting playable Starfy is Sakurai

How do u know Olimar was even altered? None of the pikmin games give a scale to how tall he really is. He could be 3-4 ft tall and interacts with oranges that are actually 7 feet tall. Sure the games hint that he is on earth and that all the stuff he collects is our remnants but I think that's a bit dark for a game miyamoto just made for funsies.

For argument's sake, the games feature Duracell aa batteries and the booklet in the first game made a big deal about the scale, comparing him to a memory card and other things iirc. He's a little dude.

That said, his argument is silly. They *could* have done it fine, but nah

I don't know if you're talking about characters actual age or franchise age. Golden Sun is as old as Pikmin. Could have used TLA Isaac who is same age as adult link i think.

I mean franchise age. Sakurai has stated that they look at how bright of a future a franchise has when selecting newcomers, so with that in mind Golden Sun seems like it isn't old enough to qualify for a retro character like Duck Hunt.

I disagree with his position regarding Ridley, but why do people think that Sakurai would likely be replaced by someone who'd favor a series like Metroid? When I look at the character selection in most Mario spin offs, it becomes clear how much worse Smash's characters selection could be in other hands.

Who is he trying to keep happy by keeping it like the original? It's not like he's all that threatening after a billion losses himself, nor is it essential to keep him threatening.

Fans seem more upset about him not being in then they ever would be if he had to be resized a bit.

So he doesn't shrink down well to standard smash size eh? Most people who weren't desperate for the additional Metroid representative thought the same thing really. It's no shock someone behind the creation of the game may feel the same way. Sakurai is only human and he's allowed to have his own thoughts on things free from the needy hands of the series' Frankenstein monster fanbase. You can expect him to respect fan requests and wishes to an extent but he can't, won't and shouldn't bow down to every fan request against his own judgement.

He's not as bad as Lucas since Sakuri's new stuff is actually still good, even if they had a few disappointing decisions.

But I agree, its time for the series to get a fresh face behind it.

Come on man. He doesn't have to listen to every single last fan suggestion, but this is by far one of the most popular requests the fan have. You can listen to the fans a little bit without letting them take over the entire game design.

I don't really care about Ridley, but I don't see why his addition would be so bad, even if he had to be shrunk down and looked silly.

I don't understand what he's trying to say at all honestly. Lots of characters in Smash are not really depicted the way they were in their original games AT ALL and that's fine sometimes. I do agree though that they'd have to do some tweaks to his proportions but that's whatever to me. The Melee intro video has a decent idea going on, just go with that.

I don't see why Sakurai can't just create a new Ridley design for Smash Bros if he feels the other designs are too lanky. And even then the only one that's really lanky is Super Metroid Ridley.

Just feels like a half baked excuse he felt he had to answer because of the high demand of requests for him in.

But Sakurai is Smash tho.

I always love the assumption from people that if Sakurai was replaced as director, the series would be exactly the same except all of their complaints would be addressed.

If he wants to talk about accurate representations in Smash, then someone ask him about Ness, Ganondorf or Wario. Or even how it took until now to give DK his roll attack (which has been one of his main attacks since he he became his own franchise).

Yeah, kind of ready for someone else to bring a fresh perspective to Smash.

Lol.

"Never mind the fact that Sakurai is one of the best game designers in the industry, and that Smash is one of the best game franchises out there, has both hardcore and mainsteeam appeal, is the perfect love song to Nintendo's history, has amazing music, and plays great... I want someone else on it because maybe then Ridley will be playable."

Some of you guys will never let it go.

If Sakurai is as good a designer as people think he is, he'd find a way to make Ridley work.

According to what he said, he would be able to make him work "wrong". The character would not be true to its nature and form. It would be like making Giga Bowser or Master Hand playable characters.

If Sakurai is as good a designer as people think he is, he'd find a way to make Ridley work.

He doesn't have to.

I'd love to see Dixie Kong in the game. In fact, at this point, I feel like there's no justifiable reason Dixie Kong isn't in Smash. But she isn't. Sakurai's ability as a director doesn't have anything to do with that.

Jesus Christ. I know Smash is serious business, but every time I jump into a Smash thread, I see some new shit that goes completely beyond the pale.

I love Sakurai, but this reasoning is complete BS.

Numerous other characters have been adjusted to fit the series properly, and its not like Ridley has been ONE SINGLE LOOK the entire Metroid series, there have been many variations so why couldn't he just have a 'Smash Brothers variation' - its a space dragon called Ridley who looks like he should but maybe a bit smaller? :|

If it was a Kid Icarus or Kirby character or something I bet he would have made it work, thats why I say BS to you sir.

A lot of those sizes are way off. DeeDeeDee is much bigger than that and so is Charizard.

Somebody said this earlier in the thread, but that's been Charizard's (and Mega Charizard's) height from the beginning. People just remember him being huge because he was constantly next to a ten year old kid in the anime.
