Sakurai on why Ridley isn't playable in Smash Bros.

Cause when I think of how to accurately represent Ganondorf, I immediately think of him having the same exact fighting style of a future race car driver.

Sakurai needs to get his head out of his own ass. He's legitimately making stuff up to make himself sound better.

He overworks and doesn't want to admit when he is wrong because it makes his work seem useless. Even though we know he does his best and takes on too much. Just my ideas and I can definitely see where he is coming from but I'd also like more honesty.

I'd prefer it if for the next Smash Bros they find away to balance large over-sized characters. Other fighting games have done it to varying degrees of success.

Ridley is too big. Let's find a way to make 'too big' not a problem.

I feel like incorporating Ridley (faithfully) would kind of be akin to PTX-40A and Gold Lightan in Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, and we all know how that turned out.

While I get what you mean I think the platforming nature of Smash stage design makes this more of a problem to overcome than the standard fighting game.

He wouldn't even be a trophy if that were the case. Miyamoto suggested to Retro that they try making their own villains, so they did. Twice. And nobody cares about them. Now the president of Retro Studios, Michael Kelbaugh, is following the Kremling Kampaign on Twitter, and he has apparently been lurking Smashboards. I'd love to see Retro's take on the Kremlings in a future DKC title. At least K. Rool can stand on two legs unlike a certain other reptilian creature.

Finally, some good news! I don't care what anyone says, K. Rool is DK's Bowser. No matter how ugly people think he is. All the old DK renders are pretty ugly. I'm sure Retro would tweak K. Rool into something a lot nice.

You shrunk Rosalina, cut the bullshit. Why can't we use a Ridley variant like his little furry self or the middle sized version?

I'm inclined to agree with Sakurai here. Ridley would just look really awkward if he was playable to me because...yeah, he really is too big since he's supposed to be this intimidating large Metroid boss. I don't really care if Ridley is in or not (though I DO think Metroid should have 3 reps now), so ehhhhh.

If only he could make Ganondorf's set more faithful...

Its more of a novelty thing but I wouldnt mind an asymmetrical 1v4 mode where one player is a big boss character like Ridley or Master Hand. i feel like thats the best way to make ridley "playable" and do him justice by Sakurai's constraints

I can't really think of any possible attacks for Adam, except shooting people on his team or making a completely ineffective sacrifice.

Blue Samus Clone is the most likely pick.

Adam's moveset would be based around locking and unlocking everyone elses move set at his authorization

I'd like to think that they would give him proper visual overhaul treatment but thus far they've taken the likes of Dixie and Funky straight from their Paon game look just with more visual polish so I'm not entirely optimistic.
And that's if they even go for a round three with Kremlings to boot.

Disabling the usage of Up B when people are trying to recover, I think I can get behind Mister Malkovich.

Smash fans need to start pushing for classic pig Ganon, he's just small enough to make it in.

I'm imagining battling a turbo charged Robo Ridley with standard Pirate proportions who zips around like Dark Samus and I'm not gonna lie, I kind of want this now even if its completely silly.

Actually I was just thinking this. Look at Volga from Hyrule Warriors. He actually is a humanized Dragon and can even transform into full size. Would work great for a new Metroid game. Either a new experiment by the pirates or even the Federation (developed as a well intended countermeasure against Samus, goes rogue and starts deserting everything). Have his humanized moveset as the main character with a final smash transforming into full Ridley. BAM!

1) Those Other M variants are not what people think of whenever Ridley is mentioned
2) Rosalina is easily scalable because she is a bipedal character, as is a majority of the roster. Ridley has his ugly bird beak, neck, wings, claws, tail, etc. He is not a bipedal character with wings attached.

You could argue that Duck Hunt is just as exotic a character to design as Ridley, but their size/proportions are much more practical.

I'm convinced at this point that there could be a Ridley boss battle where he never leaves the ground and people would still argue that Ridley constantly flies.

Its obvious he is discussing the proportions of his body would be difficult to make into a viable playable character. Im not sure how he would get Ridley to be agile enough to cover his hit box. His long tail, large wing span and gangly neck would be huge issues that characters like Bowser and Charizard do not have.

I was a big supporter of the character and I really want another Metroid character (Dark Samus?) playable for the next smash but Sakurai put in a ton of hours and a ton of work into this game. I dont think he just felt lazy or wanted to spite Metroid fans by not making him playable as some seem to imply here. I think its quite telling that of all the smash mod versions there has yet to be a viable Ridley option created.

Only thing he should emphasize more on in the next smash is the Prime trilogy, the music and setting has been vastly under represented.

Since when has Bowser ever had a consistent size?

The guy is a different size in every game he is in for feck sake.

Yeah, there are plenty of versions of Bowser that are the size of a very large human. Ganon's Smash form also has canon backing, even though that's usually not his "final form" in the games. Ridley, however, has been at least five times the size of Samus in every version of Metroid since they had the tech to make him that big.

And even if size wasn't an issue, there's still the "flying around freely" thing. A Ridley that can't truly fly arguably isn't really Ridley, and being able to do so would be pretty broken.

Here's a Brawl mod that let's you play as Ridley. As you can see, he looks like a purple starved chicken when shrunken down.

Bad example, here's another Brawl mod that actually looks pretty close to an authentic playable Ridley.

Mind you, I still don't think he'd make a good character for Smash and agree with Sakurai for the most part on Ridley but from watching this video I think you could make a case for it maybe.

I think this is positive news for Ridley supporters. This statement shows that Nintendo is aware that there is a strong desire for Ridley as a playable character. Thus, when Nintendo releases the next smash game, Ridley will be one of the selling points. Money > Director's desires. Also, Sakurai can always change his mind.

That's EXACTLY what I've been saying. He's too big and overpowered to make into a character that's faithful to his origin. Really hope this shuts up the fanboys. If anything though, I wish he could compromise by adding a special vs mode for Wii U that lets a gamepad user control the stage bosses.

The stage boss thing is all I really wanted. I figured Ridley would be pretty difficult to make into a viable fighter, but having a 1 vs 4 mode where you control a boss would be pretty great. The only problem, though, is that yellow devil really wouldn't work for this mode, as he only has two attacks and never walks around.

Didn't stop him from doing it for other characters.

Dat female size empowerment tho.

Why is people so obsessed with ridley making it into smash rooster, even if they allowed it to happen, it would just be a lame Charizard clone and we already got plenty of those, so why bother.

What still bewilders my mind is the inclussion of a dull character like Falcon from a dead series, they should have went to Konami to make Snake return, a much more iconic and charming figure that was actually interesting to play with in Brawl, but nope, instead we got the same cheap carbon copy of C.Falcon from previous game but now on roids.

Model looks way better but ugh those animations
That's because they're mostly Charizard's animations with some slight changes. Personally I'd give him a proper running animation with a lot of side-to-side movement for his dash instead of the Charizard glide.

I think a model like that while still huge, could work. It'd take a lot of effort to get it balanced right but it could work.

Also, Ridley predominantly fights on the ground in Other M, Prime 3, and the latter part of his Prime 1 battle. A hypothetical Smash Bros Ridley should have a lot of aerial mobility, but there's no issue with allowing him to walk.

Like kids today still know who Isaac is.

But Golden Sun is a classic. They have the game on e-shop, so they could put the character in and people might check out the game.
I didn't know like half the roster when i first played smash 64.

Nintendo could've made the game far more diverse. Pokemon has far too many reps imo.
