Find the population comparisons more interesting. Combine everyone else and you still don't add up to China. Had no idea Japan was that populated or that Germany was the most populace country in germany.

Well, I knew so :)

Interesting, expected a lot more average in the Netherlands. Didn't know we are spending less per capita than gamers in Belgium.

Too bad we don't have PC numbers for Austria, I'd assume the PC/console split is similar to Germany (and thus way ahead of pretty much everywhere else).

Hey, our (Sweden) population is not 8.4m, it's more like 9.4m.
I was really surprised by that, I thought that Sweden had a larger population than Austria (i'm Austrian).

Interesting that some people don't have a good feel for population sizes around the world. I guess that high school geography course was actually useful to me.

Aside from China, the list is sort of what I expected in terms of total revenue. USA, Japan, UK, Germany, etc. China surprised me for a moment, because I hadn't thought of it. It's a potentially huge market, if console makers could get in and if they could prevent piracy.

Where's India btw? Don't they have a game market there? Or maybe they just don't track sales there yet? Because India could be another potential huge market with that population.

If I find numbers for India I'll post them.

But it seems that India is quite small.

UPDATE:

I've found GfK - numbers for South Africa:

Population: 50.586.757
Average spend: $ 4,70
Total revenue $ 237.611.843

Piracy and gaming is for kids is one reason why gaming isnt great here.

PS2 outsells ps3 here lol.

However PC games on launch day are cheap here like i can buy Max Payne 3 here ! 22$ in PC.

Cool. Thanks for posting. :>
Yes it seems to be a very small market indeed.

I was searching a bit on google for Russian numbers as well, because it also seemed like it should be a pretty significant market, but I only found hard numbers for 09 here:

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2010-08-16-russian-government-to-support-USD820m-games-industry
Seems like the market should grow quite a lot in the coming years going by this.

And here's a report for 2010 but unfortunately it combines toys and video games.
http://www.euromonitor.com/toys-and-games-in-russia/report

I haven't read the pdf in that last link because I couldn't open it... the application (evince) gave me a "*** stack smashing detected ***: evince terminated" error, so I would be careful with that file if opening in adobe reader. But it could also be evince being weird. Never happened before though.

I've found some numbers for 2011, but they're only for the "social gaming" - market, which was worth $ 200.000.000 in 2011. ( http://www.gamesindustryblog.com/2012/02/russian-social-gaming-company-game-insight-reached-50m-revenues-in-2011/ )

UPDATE:
You thought UK-people spend a lot of money? Then take a look at South Korea

South Korea 2011

Population: 48.875.000
Average spend: $ 167,75
Total revenue: $ 8.199.000.000

The Korean video game industry has been outstandingly successful. According to a report issued by the Korea Creative Content Agency and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korean gaming industry made sales of 9.11 trillion won last year, a 22.7% increase compared to sales from the previous year.
http://www.koreaittimes.com/story/19796/korea-becomes-nation-cultural-exports

Switzerland 2011

Population: 7.952.600
Average spend: $ 24,09
Total revenue: $ 191.557.759

Unfortunately we don't have numbers for Q4 2011, it's the holiday season and the swiss market should be ~1.6 - 2 times bigger.

Those are worldwide sales of Korean video games though. Canada would be pretty high up on the list if Worldwide sales of Canadian games were included in Canada's figures.

Updated the first post, thx BKK.

I'll update the breakdom-picture later, because my excel-file is at home.

From the SK source:

"The quantity of gaming exports also has increased by 37.7% to USD 2.211 billion. It was analyzed that the popularity of smartphones and an increase in export of smartphone games have contributed to the increase of Korean video game exports."

Then I should lower the South Korean revenue by $2.211.000.000 to get the intrinsic value?

Actually I'm not 100% certain it does include exports, but I only have Kocca white paper for 2010 where they had domestic sales of KRW 7.4t ($6.4b) and forecast domestic sales of KRW 8.5t ($7.3b) for 2011. Lots of that is made up of stuff that wouldn't usually be included in other countries figures though such as internet cafes.

http://www.kocca.kr/knowledge/report/kocca/__icsFiles/afieldfile/2012/03/05/OCf1uvm9jXP8.pdf

Edit:

the Korean gaming industry made sales of KRW 9.11 trillion last year, a 22.7% increase compared to sales from the previous year.
9.11 / 1.227 = 7.42461288

That's within the rounding error of the 2010 domestic figure, so I think it doesn't include exports afterall.

Yes, seems like it. :)

Another thing from the white paper (page 7):
But I can't figure out what this is, it doesn't match the data in Won (from your post), whatever. :p

The hell is wrong with Koreans and Britons?
It's interesting to play that off against the fact that so many games get so cheap here so rapidly. But then on the other hand, the sales figures don't look particularly good in the weekly charts. There's an odd mismatch. Are we just more accepting of DD?

What's SNS?

So this puts Japan at #2.

Japan is far ahead of the UK, funny how everyone reported that these markets are quite similair in the past. (Let alone in 2006 / 2007)

And we're lacking numbers for accessories (should be some additional 100 millions). :p

And SIEA updated their site finally.

The swiss gaming market was 336 million $ big last year.

This puts the overall gaming market to 71 billion $.

I guess the overall market could be ~90 billion $ total.

I blame a rise in socially inept bedroom dwelling heavy mouth breathers with an impressive hentai collection.
Koreans probably play more outside their homes then inside them.
Anyway numbers from China and Korea are significant since retail contributes almost nothing there, it's mostly Digital revenue (and free to play makes vast majority of it, respectively).
That said it'd be interesting if there were numbers for active gaming populations instead of total populations. Last I saw those (in 2010), China and US were basically even (around 60M each).

ctrl f "ireland".. huh?

I thought we would have been up there as a game buying nation.

I guess not.
I can't find any numbers for Ireland, but I suppose it isn't that small (mid-tier european market).

I can't find any gaming association which is responsible for Ireland, but GfK should track this market.

http://www.gamedevelopers.ie/forums/viewtopic.php?p=46838

These are the only numbers I could find, but it seems like its based on surveys, which isn't representative enough.

What numbers are you using for Japan? 940 billion yen using the exchange rate in the image gives me 11.7 billion dollars.
