Samsung Gear VR : Consumer Edition Thread: Goodbye, real world.

I'm looking to get one of these (if I find one in the uk/eu...)

Would you say this is good for trying VR for the first time? I already have an S6 so I don't need to spend hundreds on a phone + headset

I set up the oculus app already but can't find a way to search for this adventure time app I've seen a trailer include and can't see it in the store

And lastly why are controllers much more expensive in the uk than the US :(

If you read my post in the bottom of the last page you came at the right time. The Gear VRs library is on fire and it's an awesome experience with tons of uses. I haven't tried other headsets, but I can definitely tell you it's worth every penny.

Unfortunately I don't have an answer to your other questions.

Just to reiterate on my last post so people see, new apps have been added to the store. Two new games called Drift and Esper 2. Played Drift and was blown away. Then Flickr came out with their app which launches you into an absolutely beautiful starry scene. Then there's an app called VR cruise and Jaunt has finally been released for Gear VR. They aren't all showing in new releases yet, but you access them through the Oculus store with the headset off.

Yea it's slightly annoying that all the newest stuff seems to initially appear buried at the very bottom of their category, so far that the VR store interface doesn't even show them half the time. But everything is still in its infancy, it could be much worse lol, so I understand. Downloaded Cruise and Flickr but haven't tried yet.

Bought and beat Lands End last night and all I can say is wow, a must buy IMO. Looks fantastic, the gameplay is simple but fun and doesn't require any input device other than looking around. I stood up the entire time playing it, which I would recommend since it felt way more natural.

I also tried out Oculus Social and ended up in a room where a guy was streaming a UFC fight from his PC. It would be super fun to get a GAF room together for movie nights or something like that.

After UFC he decided to put on some porn, at which point I GTFO lol.

LOL

Yes, Land's End is a great VR experience. It's slow, comfortable and simple enough for anyone to enjoy, but wondrous enough to keep you engaged and interested. The scenery is nice to look at. It's basically the type of experience I want most in VR. Exploring interesting places and seeing beautiful things.

Ya the social app is amazing. I sat in the forest room watching the Video Game Awards while chatting with 4 random guys.

You need the option to throw shit at the screen though, BOOOOOOO

So far, the things that have wowed me the most are the simple recreations of real life. Like the Oculus Cinema. Turning around and seeing the seat cushion right in front of my face was insane.

Getting a lot of overheating on my S6. Probably my biggest complaint so far. I saw online that they recommend removing the phone's battery cover and blowing a fan while you play, but that's ridiculous. Hopefully this is something that can be optimized as development continues.

I was really hesitant initially on what phone to get, for the s6 I knew I'd be missing out on the lower sde due to higher ppi, but after reading reports like yours scattered around I'm glad I went with the note 5, hasn't given me an overheat warning once so far. You really think Samsung and Oculus would have troubleshooted the overheating problem between the s6 innovator edition and the consumer one, just not a good look for a consumer showing of VR to have it overheat that often. Like you said though, maybe this is something they can mitigate with firmware updates.

This was advised for people with Note4. S6 and later devices are unable to remove backplate but because they're glass unlike the Note4 the heat distributes more evenly and overheating is reduced. I have S6 and have had a lot of success with just making sure i have a fan pointed towards my head. Also I've been plugging a battery charger into the GearVR charge port and notice the phone stays a bit cooler that way.

This is also possible:

I only got overheating from downloading/installing + Jurassic park on my S6. Atleast that's the only time it ever warned me. Think it got close when I was using the twitch app for a long time, not sure though.

Yeah it overheats when you download stuff. I haven't had it anymore when I stopped doing that.

Played drift for a bit but I'm immediately stuck on the first real level, bleh. Not sure I like it that much. The concept is neat but I hope it goes somewhere.

Also, am I the only one that gets eye strain after a while? Only happens with high speed games that make you focus. Had it with Smash Hit and now with drift.

Canadian here, can't wait to get in on this. My Bestbuy.ca order is still showing as "In Progress", but they've already charged my card like two days ago. Anyone have theirs actually ship from Best Buy yet?

are there any/many games that are not on rails ?

wondering if a game pad is justfied .. ie something like PSVR's rigs .. or a flying sim .. or something ..jetpacks woiuld be awesome

What's the best phone to maximize gear vr? S6 Edge +, S6, or note 5?

I would go Note5/Edge+. Just did a stress test on my S6 and if you push it to the limit you may only get about 20-30 minutes of playtime before you get a blackscreen due to overheating. The newer/bigger phones are supposedly much harder to overheat. With that said I'm usually able to get several hours of play without an overheat warning on most games and apps on S6. S6/S6edge has the higher ppi which is its main advantage over all other phones.

Here's the stress test I posted on reddit:

I was a little disappointed with how much light distortion around the edges of the lens there was. I couldn't look at one side of the larger cinema screens without the other sides stretching out or becoming blurry.

Tried it with my glasses (I am near sighted) and it seems to have helped it a great amount. I see things great up close and logically I can't see why I'd need my glasses to see something 2 inches from my face haha.

Has anyone tried TrinusVR with this headset yet??
Impressions please :¨P

I've tried TrinusVR. Very hard to get the settings right on GearVR. It seems to be better suited and has presets for Cardboard and other generic headsets. Maybe they will get full GearVR support but for now it takes ALOT of tinkering with the huge amount of pupil and lens correction settings to get stuff running correctly. There were a few people who have been able to get GTA5 running in GearVR but maybe not so well.

My wife has informed me her work is switching from Blackberry to Samsung. She's getting a Galaxy S6.

Hell yes.

We're definitely getting the GearVR now. So excited!

I've had my Gear VR since last Friday when I was super lucky and found one at an AT&T store nearby. I'm using a Note 5 and a Moga Power Pro ($33 at Target online, got the store to price match. Their Moga Heros are being clearanced for $30 and that's what I bought first. immediately returned it for the Pro and so glad I did. Build quality is night and day, the Hero is total garbage. Can't believe it's MSRP $60)

So here are my impressions and thoughts:

It's amazing! I always knew VR would be awesome and have been anticipating this era since I was a child in the early 90s. Obiously there is a lot of progress yet to be made and I can't wait for the PS VR to drop for my PS4, but this is such an excellent stop-gap for $100. I've been converting people at every opportunity and it never ceases to amaze me that even my parents were immediately floored.

Video and photos have been awesome. I was surprised at how much I enjoy just browsing Oculus Photos. I've also been downloading HQ 3D films and putting them on my phone to watch in Oculus Video. So nice to lay back in bed and feel like you are in a movie theater! Resolution is very important, though, and I find most of the 360 videos you can stream or download through the app to be far too compressed. Compression artifacts, macroing and color banding are absolutely no good and breaks my immersion. I've been doing my own conversions from stuff on my computer.

Some of the "experiences" have been really fascinating. It's clear that there is a lot of potential here for education and art. Especially in story-telling. Rose was quite engaging despite its simplicity and really opened my eyes to the idea that this can become a whole new medium for film and interactive stories.

Soundscape seemed like a great idea but there's some pretty horrible noises and I didn't care for it.

Gaming has been a mixed bag, but this is mostly due to some poor choices on my part and the fact that I'll need to wait for more expendable funds.

Gunjack is neat but I can't help knowing I'd probably never play it were it not VR. That kind of sums up the majority of my game experiences so far - would I really find this interesting were it not VR?

I bought Deer Hunter mainly for my dad but also because it was pretty highly rated for $5. Whoops. It's incredibly boring.

Smash Hit is the only thing that has made me sick.

Dreadhalls was too much for my poor little heart. Didn't get far into the demo because I don't enjoy jumpscares.

Temple Run VR.... eh.

Adventure TIme was quite nice but it was over in 20 minutes, far too simple and I felt burned.

Herobound is great and very much the 3D/2D Zelda mashup I've wanted from Nintendo

Land's End is also great, haven't beaten it because I've been trying to stretch it out.

Bandit Six: Whoops again! Also really boring. Those guns have ZERO feeling of force or power.

The Proton Pulse demo seemed ok but kinda unpolished.

Anshar Wars 1 seemed neat, need to play more.

Mortal Blitz VR Demo - AWFUL

Oculus Arcade was a pleasant surprise! Really cool but also very much a novelty. Not sure I would actually want to play those old games like that.

MOST IMPRESSIVE: Quake VR! Yup, the coolest thing I've played is an unofficial port of an ancient 90s PC FPS.

I also still have a bunch of other demos I've yet to get around to.

I'm going to buy more games this weekend. NEED HELP DECIDING! I don't want to get burned again, I need something with some meat. Not overly simple and of good length. Preferably not another sit n shoot! Here's what I'm eyeing:

Anshar Wars 2, Drift, Dead Secret, Omega Agent, Daydream Blue, Evil Robot Traffic Jam, Darknet, Bombsquad

I'd really appreciate some impressions or suggestions on these or any other games if you guys can share some. Especially regarding gameplay complexity and length and if you think the games would still be worth playing without the VR. Or would it even be the same game? I only have so much money! Thanks folks!

I have a Note 4, is there any limitations on what I expect my experience to be with the Innovator Edition vs a Note 5 with the Consumer Edition?

I just want to make sure I can expect to play all the games and apps everyone's enjoying.

I've had some overheating issues with my s6 as well. Even using my ceiling fan helps a lot.

So what's the best racing game to get for GearVR? I'm talking something like Driveclub in terms of controls, arcady but sim elements. Would love to read recommendations and impressions.

Some devs have made it a point to provide updates for their apps for Note 4 still, but generally ongoing support is going to be spotty for it unfortunately. Samsung is primarily focusing on the 2015 lineup of flagships for Gear at this point. There may be some workarounds here and there for certain titles but we've been seeing numerous reports of Note 4 users not being able to download certain newer apps.

The advantages of the note 4 innovator is less light leak into the headset, and from what I've read a somewhat sturdier build of the shell. Beyond that the experience is going to be on par with a note 5 consumer what with same panel/ppi etc.

Aside from vr kart racing I don't think there's any dedicated racing game with a realistic aesthetic similar to Driveclub's for Gear, though the ecosystem could certainly use one, would be a great addition to the library.

The bolded is interesting. Don't think I've seen anyone else say that. People have said it's not the best quality in the world and the Pro is better. But to call it garbage...I'm skeptical it's that bad. In fact, I've seen some pretty positive impressions of it.

That is absolutely shitty, but par the course for mobile apps and gaming I suppose.

This may be a curious question due to legality, but do those apps that cannot be downloaded run if sideloaded?

Omega Agent is a jetpacker's dream come true. Definitely need a controller though to shoot weapons and use turbo boost.

perfect! it's pretty much pilotwings VR...

my DS4 stopped pairing 20 seconds in and had me in a spin .... was shocked how dizzy i got before i had to rip off the headset ... so awesome.

will need to get me the steel series XL i think

Some can yes, such as the mobile vr game jam entries, but they all need to have a signature locked to your device afaik so that makes anything piracy related tricky. This site has a bunch of the .apks from the game jam that you can sideload:

I read a bit more about the Note 4 issue and it seems the lollipop update is what has been killing Oculus Home (the store and app launcher) for Note 4 innovator users, in addition to performance problems with apps, so you might be able to do a workaround if on kitkat.

Please do yourself a favor and change the settings to swivel chair mode in the options and say bye bye to dizzyness/nausea. :)

Flikr app is actually pretty great. I was mostly watching 360 videos previously. But the jump in resolution and not having to worry about bitrate turning my viewing experience into a blocky mess is actually making me like the 360 photos a good deal more than the videos.

I was pretty taken aback by the quality because I had read no real complaints. The analog sticks are very cheap, loose and flimsy, plasticky-feeling junk. N64-level. The plastic housing is pretty low-quality, you can see and feel it. The "triggers" are little squishy nubs with no throw. The over-all form factor was pretty unbalanced and uncomfortable. Not great at all for the palms and really bad weight distribution if you actually put your phone in the clip (the angle of which isn't really ideal for either the Hero or Pro). I don't have anything against Moga, this was my first time using their products, but the $20 difference in MSRP for the Pro means a massive leap in build quality and comfort, not to mention the battery goes from 1800 mAh to 2200 mAh. But again, if you are buying from Target it's $30 for the Hero and $34 for the Pro. Which is honestly much closer to what the MSRP should be for both. The Hero should not cost the same as a DS4 or XB1 pad and the Pro certainly shouldn't be $80, that's insane.

So this thing launches in Canada today. I've heard a rumor that it won't work until an update gets pushed through by the Canadian Telecoms. Anyone know if this is true, or can I just buy one and plug and play?

Yeah, I haven't tried flickr yet but Oculus Photos has been one of my favorite experiences for that very reason. 360 video is just way too low res and compressed. The photos are so clear and sharp by comparison that it's much more impressive, especially if they are 3D photos vs the usually 2D video. The Cirque du Soleil Kurios Cabinet video was excellent though, one of the best I've seen.

Once you plug it in, the phone downloads the Oculus packages so maybe that's what they were thinking. Nothing on the service provider side though.

Just got mine in the mail a few hours ago. Messed around with some of the intro videos and I have to say so far i'm impressed with the immersion. Only thing i've noticed that's a bit of an issue is there tends to be a very fine spot for total focus and in most cases anywhere above of below my viewing "horizon" tends to blur unless i look at it directly. So sometimes text below the line i'm reading is washed out of objects floating around on either sides of my fields of view have a halo around them...etc(could have also been the compression artifacts...). Might just be the s6e, gonna try a note 5 at work tomorrow and see if that makes a difference.

Hey I just want to say thanks.

Looks like the Lollipop issues have a workaround if you do a custom ROM, but I just don't think its a good idea to drop >$200 on the few Innovator Editions still floating around. Maybe one day Samsung will come around to make the Note 6 more my style of phone.

Does anyone want to type up some impressions of Soundscape? It seems like it would be my type of thing, but I haven't been able to find any opinions on it beyond the sounds being unpleasant (not sure if that is a reference to eventual cacophony of three people on sequencers or the actual timbre of he samples).

Well you can play by yourself if you ever want to. I found when I played with others everyone attempted to make it sound good. It reminded me of the old game Electroplankton on the DS, basically just a tool to mess around with music. The UI is simple but clean and the space you're in is interesting and well designed. I'd say it's definitely worth a few bucks.

Thanks forthe opinion. I loved Electroplankton and I'm curious about jamming with strangers in VR; I'll check it out.

Get Dead Secret guys. Those who love old school Resident Evil will love it.

The game is just all kinds of amazing. Atmosphere is freaky as heck.

We've been looking at its UI as inspiration for what we've been doing with the HTC Vive.
