Does the new model work with the Note 4?

That's weird that it doesn't. I have the Gear VR Innovator edition (1st test model) and it works great with it other than giving me overheating issues a lot.

Finally got around to playing Land's End. Got through 3 chapters, nice little puzzle game. Think my favorite app is still oculus video/social. Watched Twitch on a huge screen floating in the void while I laid in bed for the night.

Oculus social is a pretty amazing little app.

Kinda wish they'd have straight up chat rooms though - because watching stuff kinda detracts from conversation - the content that they feature is not all that compelling.

Best would be classic movies and new TV shows - but that's not gonna turn up for a while.

Content sharing would be pretty neat; you have netflix, so you can make a netflix social room - and others without netflix can still jump in.

Not sure if they can manage that though.

But the most amazing part of Oculus social is that it gives you a tantalizing taste of what VR is really going to be about.

You start talking to people, holding a conversation with them in VR - and you just completely forget about the physical reality that you're in.

Your brain just doesn't have the bandwidth to be concerned about small presence disruptors AND engage in social conversation.

The fact that you can look around and see what other people are looking around at is really compelling stuff. Such a simple thing - but seeing where people have their attention drawn is so important and lets us into their mind on a very intuitive and visceral manner that you can't really achieve any other way.

Also, once I experienced social, I kinda wanted everything else to be social in the same way. Been able to talk shit and share all sorts of VR content with other people in a social manner would be amazing.

Outside of social (which actually didn't work too well for me when I tried it - kept getting dropped from rooms, and other people were frequently been dropped too) - I'm really liking 360 media content.

The stereo stuff is especially cool. You can almost get a sense of presence from it as well.

It feels to me as though... your awareness of the physical space that you're in shrinks to the reach of your body... and beyond that, it just blends into the visual space.

Not so much like you're there there, but like you're observing this bubble of captured reality in a certain time and space.

It's like been a time travelling ghost!

VR is awesome like that.

So you can get cardboard working with Gear VR, which is a pretty nice bonus to content.

https://www.reddit.com/r/GearVR/comments/3c061s/cardboard_on_gear_vr_for_s6_easy_nonroot_solution/

By far my favourite cardboard content is... Google streetview. Actually, scatch that. Probably my favourite VR content period, to date.

You can literally travel around in an entire city through streetview, getting fairly decent sequential steps of 360 photospheres. And it's just... the best way of virtual travelling that's ever existed (to date).

You really get a sense of feel for a place when you step through a fully encompassing environment.

It's not presence - but you easily forget that you're whereever you are - and you start to get a feeling of the spatial relation of the city you're moving around in streetview.

If we could combine this sort of visit city functionality with social VR, it'd be an incredibly compelling experience.

And in a few short years, we'll be able to traverse in a fully 360 recreation of those cities... probably. Google is already working on (and has shown off) tech that extrapolates the 3D information between the multiple photosphere views of street view.

Just got this for my birthday.

I freaking love it. And to think that this device is just the beginning and only scratches the surface for future VR devices. I'm actually surprised how well stuff like Netflix and the social apps work very well with this. Did not except that.

My question however is the couple of overheating messages I would get. Is there a way to not make my phone overheat as fast?

Use a charger so it's not using battery, take off the cover, turn on do not disturb (while in VR) and set the brightness down to 3-5 range. Also close all other apps before launching.

Turn brightness down to about 3. Turn on Do Not Disturb mode. Turn off apps and bloatware before you start a session. I've heard turning Airplane mode on helps also. This should more than double the amount of playtime before your session ends completely from overheating.

Apologies if this is a stupid question but how do I turn off all apps and bloatware? Do you mean just simply swipe off anything that's active or does it involve me going into settings?

I use a free app called 360 Security. Its good at closing apps that run behind the scenes even ones that tend to secretly turn back on after you've already killed them. It also has a cooldown feature that brings temps down.

Oh sweet. I'll definitely try this.

Thanks very much guys. :D

Besides those social apps, what has been most of VRGaf's favorite apps so far?

Well, there's a button on the app switching menu that lets you close all the apps at once.

Land's End
EVE Gunjack
Titans of Space
MilkVR/Jaunt

These are the ones I greatly enjoyed. I also have 'Keep talking...' but I'm going to save that for when I'm with friends in a cabin in the woods over Christmas holiday.

Okayish to me: Drift, Ocean Rift, Smash Hit, Adventure Time.

Question for you guys when you get the heat message. Does sitting at the warning screen allow the temperature to drop? Does taking off the headset? Or do you have to close out occulus completely?

Anshar Wars
Omega Agent
Smash Hit
Adventure Time

These are amazing to play as well as show off to others and make them believe in VR ;)

Have all of them apart from Omega Agent, how queasy-ish is it? For reference my most motion sick game so far was temple run when you need to go to the sides to collect coins

Temple Run has always been known as the most vomit inducing title on GearVR. Havent even tried it because of that reputation. Omega Agent can be very disorienting if you dont play it in swivel chair mode.

It seems logical that the phone would cooldown when its only showing the warning screen but havent tried. The last time I got the warning screen I tapped touchpad to resume and was able to use it for another 45 minutes before it crashed finally and I was purposely using the most overheat inducing app (Kurios) to see how long it would last. The performance was stable throughout with no studders or framerate drops. Pretty impressive actually considering S6 can be finnicky with that.

Some of those Jaunt videos are pretty good, was surprised all of them are in 3d, just wish there was a way to download them for best quality. The three part Jack White performance at Red Rocks is fantastic, really really want to see more 180/360 3d videos produced of concerts with super close arrangements like they've done with this one. Feels incredibly intimate, seeing a guitarist in front of you doing all the chord changes with that fov is a helluva thing. I can imagine in a few years time once bandwidth capabilities are better streaming hq 3d concerts live to vr headsets, people buying "tickets" for the events too. Damn this shit is exciting.

There's a corny horror themed one called Black Mass that's pretty fun, good production values and clever use of scenery encompassing the 180 spectrum, just wish it was longer. Definitely much higher quality than Catatonic and for the most part it keeps you stationary which helps ground the experience and of course offset sickness. A definite recommend to those into video content.

It's such a bummer so much of the milk vr produced stuff is in 2d, like I get that its still immersive but 3d adds so much more in vr for video, leagues more of an impact than what it would produce on non vr displays. Either they just haven't invested in the equipment or there's a serious lack of understanding on the producers' part from some of these video mills. Jaunt and Felix & Paul need to spread the gospel, do a TED Talk or something.

I'm stuck in Dead Secret. Can I get some help?

I'm in the barn with the Machine but I can't turn it on. I put the calibrator thing on top and I have the hacksaw from the upper level. I can't interact with the electrical panel to the right of the machine, and though there's a chain holding the lower drawers together I can't seem to interact with it. What do I do?

Thanks.

I've been playing with it for the last few days and it's great I don't have a control yet because I don't want to pay ridiculous prices for one yet so mostly just trying to find anything controller free to use. Also never thought I'd have to pay for certain media since it's free almost every where else but now I have a trial period I paid for to check out the vr experience lol.

"Certain" media eh? Trial period you say?

It's something everyone with vr has to try at least once right? Could anyone recommend a good control that isn't to expensive? I've tried looking but everyone I find is expensive or I don't know if it's compatible.
I did moga power, think they are 38 on amazon, you use mode b and everything works perfect so far.

I've seen it, for me right now it's expensive haha guess I'll have to wait until after Christmas. Thanks for the suggestion.

Just a head up for science, KinkVR has free content for December for scientists who use this for science. Science!

Also for a controller I use a Red Samurai dual analog controller that I got from Gamestop. It's was like $20 and works fine.

Has anyone tried using a wii u pro controller with Android lately? I know back around 4.3 they stopped working, but maybe they work again?

I just have so many damn controllers, don't want to have to buy another one.

The Netflix app not supporting 3D movies on the VR is a massive oversight IMO. What a huge waste of potential. Especially seeing as the VR can play 3D movies natively.

There's a new social app called "vtime" in the concepts section that's getting a lot of positive feedback on r/gearvr, haven't tried it myself yet but apparently the environments are purported to be some of the best yet for mobile vr. There's a beach setting, space, one where you're suspended high up on a cliff face overlooking a drop, etc. Also, full body human avatars you can customize! Can invite friends, others, block users, seems a lot more fully featured than Oculus Social, though it doesn't seem as though there's media viewing options, it's a pure social experience. Curious to read others' impressions of it.

So I was due for a phone upgrade and picked up an S6 Edge, mostly because of the Gear VR. I've been waiting for VR for like 30 years and so far it's been pretty much everything I've hoped it would be. I'm SO blown away at the feeling of presence you get, just amazing stuff. I feel now more than ever that this is the future for some types of entertainment.

I hadn't experienced any of the Rift stuff so I wasn't sure how much the screen door effect would bother me and although i do notice it all the time it doesn't detract much from the experience. It reminds me of the old days of using CRT TVs/monitors and low resolutions. I know things will improve over time. In the end, this is the best reason for needing higher resolution screens and computers that can drive them.

The stuff I've tried so far:

Jurassic World Apatosaurus
Land's End
Gunjack
Anshar Wars 2
Bazaar
Cirque du Soleil (both of them)
Unity-chan
Colosse
Rose
NextVR
Netflix
Smash Hit
360 Videos and Pictures
I want a couple other games but need a controller.

Did I mention the porn? Holy crap, you can't go back to regular porn after this. I will say though that only 1 of the VR porn sites got it right, VRP. I tried 4 different sites and it's the only one that got the scale, camera position and FOV correct to really give you a sense of presence within the scene. Sometimes it was amazing how much it seemed like the girls were really there. The only thing detracting from that feeling was the screen door effect. Once you can have VR with 4k sharpness in however many years it will be incredible. NA was the worst of the 4 sites I tried, the girls looked like they were 20 feet tall.

The best thing about the GearVR is that it'll still be viable even after the other head sets come out because it's untethered. The 360 degree swivel chair games are loads of fun and you won't be able to do that with the Rift or Vive.

Of course the absolute BEST thing is I got absolutely NO motion sickness so far. That was my biggest fear since I get really bad nausea from FPS games on PC and consoles and even some 3rd person games if the camera is really moving a lot. I was really worried after so many years of waiting that I wouldn't even be able to use the technology at all. I did get the feeling of flying in some games which was awesome, by no motion sickness (yet) and I was able to use it for a few hours.

Overall I couldn't be happier, even though I'm really not a fan of Android, this makes it worth it.

Looks like Gear VR is in stock on Amazon, just in time for Christmas party..

Ordered one last night, should arrive on Thursday! I can't wait

Pretty sure no one is delivering you anything on Christmas day bruh.

Wait, Christmas is Friday. Edit: No one should have to be making deliveries on Christmas Eve lol.

I got Intugame VR working with the headset, and for the most part it works quite well. I am able to stream all my PC games directly to the headset, but there's a few tiny issues. First off if the picture quality is any higher than medium theres a fair bit of lag. Secodly it zooms in to the screen quite far and cuts off the corners of the game. I can mess about with the settings but not sure what they all mean.

I hope someone comes out with a good preset soon. Playing Outlast on this will be terrifying.

I became really curious about it when I received my headset. I ordered a subscription to the three sites that actually produce content for Gear VR (so I'd like to know what that 4th site is lol) and went wild. Initially it feels like you can't go back to normal pornography, but the people producing this stuff are really new at this and it shows.

My biggest gripe is that the stars don't know how to stay an appropriate distance from the camera. If they get too close it ruins the 3D effect. When you try to look up at them when they're too close it takes you out of the experience because it's only shot in 180 degrees and the borders of the video become visible. A lot of good videos were ruined from these issues.

I really like the eye contact they make, in fact, that's the best part to me. In order to make you feel like you're really there and involved the stars need to acknowledge the camera as the VR user's eyes. A lot of them look in the wrong direction or don't look at all. They also need to stop editing parts out. It ruins any kind of presence you can feel when you see the video fade to a new position.

VR pornography just suffers from a lot of the same issues with pornography in general though, it's not intimate. I think that's VRs best potential advantage over traditional stuff; the fact that it can alleviate that issue. With what we have now there's very little dialogue or story and the stars are obviously not directed correctly. It's nice to know the concept works well, but there's very little content that actually does it right imo. Cancelled all my subscriptions, maybe in time they'll figure it out.

got my edge plus yesterday, i cant wait for my gear vr to come in tomorrow!!

whats a must have game/app that i should try first??

Ordered this directly from Samsung about a week ago and it's still on backorder. I imagine it'll be that way for a while. However, I did use the $100 credit for activating Samsung Pay to order it, so there's that.
