Scalebound Gameplay Demo [extended IGN First demo in OP]

What game does Scalebound most remind you of?

I feel there is depth to the combat, but the character in the demo is leveled up too high so he kills everything in a hit or two. So not really worried about that.

I'm surprised they didn't show any gameplay where the player is riding the dragon, just on-foot the entire time. Hopefully there's some of that.

Game looks like very fun overall though, I just hope Kamiya's contract with MS has a clause that specifically bans him from including pace-killing, shitty-ass minigames anywhere in the campaign.

Gameplay looked great to me. Bet it's faster once it's an actual finished product. But the dragon looked amazing and it seems you can grapple to monsters backs to deal damage. And four player coop, excellent. What Dragons Dogma should have been day one (I still greatly enjoyed DD).

Should be great.

I thought it was underwhelming when it was on stage. Checked out the IGN extended demo and thought it looked quite a bit better.

I'm not blown away but it looks cool.

I accept the general idea that it's not quite "fair" to criticize a lot of things if it's pre-alpha, but realistically I'm looking at how poor the framerate is, the fact that it's an open world and trying for fidelity -- I would just be genuinely shocked if this was a stable 30 at retail. I'm expecting 20-25 fps.

This is Kamiya's dream game. I doubt that he'll let it release under 30.

This felt like an anti Platinum game in some ways to me.

Great looking environments (but rather uninspired)
Extremely boring looking gameplay/combat

I just don't get it.

Oh and the main character is awful..try hard much?

Nah, not buying it.

If the gameplay's great and innovative, then they didn't show it in this trailer. I hope I'm wrong.

Caucasian girl with dreadlocks? Red haired? I mean so natural...

Don't get me wrong I know what you mean and I agree to some extend, but then they should have make an african woman, that would've been ballsy indeed.

This way it seems they were going for it and at some point they were.... you know what paint it white, because focus group.

How is she caucasian? The dreadlocks probably has some culture reason behind it, she is from a supposedly primitive tribe after all. But I wasn't saying ''natural'' in the sense that you mentioned anyways. Actually, that is irrelevant to my point, which is: she is a non-stereotyped female character with a natural body and a unique beauty. That is the point. She is unique, easily recognizable and cool. That is a good character design.

I'm just rolling my eyes at these people saying she is ugly. I mean... opinions and all, but I found it pretty sad to see such opinions when discussing such a well-designed character like that. Well... I guess I'm getting off-topic, sorry.

Looks great to me, and I see that Microsoft has helped them add some western touches that should help it sell much better than most Platinum games.

There has to be some middle ground between "too quirky main character" and "super obnoxious fucking asshole main character".. There HAS to be...

Anti-platinum. I hate how yall accustomed platinum to making only certain games. Damn if they make something different.

edit: wtf Horizon vs scalebound here we go

If I can't fly to locations which let me play platforming and 3D shmup sidequests then I'm handing in my Kamiya fan-card.

You'll have to claw it from my dead hands.

I'm curious what you mean by "western touches", if you care to elaborate.

To me, the game looks like something any of a dozen middle-tier developers could make. Platinum has a gift to give things a certain style and humor, and this trailer showed none of it.

Fucks sake, are we really posting up pictures of the main character of Horizon to argue a point in a Scalebound thread?

People really just cant help themselves anymore.

Sweet. Use the PM feature.

She is a well-designed character other than the face. Cheers.

Am I in the wrong thread here?

They must have given Platinum a CRAZY budget for this one. I wasn't expecting that seamless gameplay transition at all, or an open world, or an RPG. Probably their biggest title to date.

It does seem focus group tested to be more palatable to the West but I suppose thats not surprising for this project.

Well that was certainly different :P I didn't care much for the demo until the end. The combat seemed so un-platinum, and a bunch of it sort of seemed like a disjointed hodgepodge of elements (whats with the headphones lol), but what they showed, with the promise of multiple players seems pretty cool to me. I'll be looking forward to more videos.

Yup I agree, this game isn't even in the same league as Horizon. Seriously, comparing an American dude bro with beats headphones around his neck on a dragon to Horizon is embarrassing.

Can we get back on topic and stop comparing Scalebound to Horizon?

Scalebound still looks great!

You are misunderstanding something here it seems. Platinum has done different games before too, that's a non issue. My remark was regarding very specific aspects of the game, not about the game itself. I have wanted them to be better at environment/atmosphere/characters so I'm glad there's some improvement made at least on some of them with this game. but the gameplay looks very very boring to me. Hence my anti platinum comment was made. Because if nothing else their combat has always felt exciting to me.

Who knows maybe in the future it can change my mind.

First they announced it too early, now they are showing it too early. Dear beelzebub that framerate was rought beyond all hell. D: So a mid-to-late 2017 for this?

Guys, I'm not comparing Horizon to Scalebound... Jesus. There is a context to that conversation.

I know it was off-topic, but it is inevitable that discussions about character designs ends up with comparasions, sorry.

Looks interesting. I mean in the first 30 seconds we got dragons, a W101 reference, and The Prodigy blasting in the background during a fight.

It's not like Platinum has to exclusively do stylish character action games, and I did enjoy what I saw in the trailer but there is a lot of room for improvement.

I can't get over how the main protagonist looks and acts. I don't know how he manages to look both so dudebro yet also so forgettable.

Pretty cool to see Scalebound and Horizon being thrown into the conversation together. Most people didn't see Scalebound's genre coming. The more large scale action RPGs the better, IMO.

Looks meh, especially from Platinum.
It could improve however, so I hope it does.

We know nothing of other environments, enemies, boss battles, how combat evolves or even how deep the mechanics of the game go. Seems a bit silly to say ''it needs to improve'' when for all we know this could be a tutorial level.

I prefer Scalebound :)
hype meter up.

The continual discussion of framerate is mortifying.
Fixed. It's pre-alpha. FFS.

If Kamiya had come out and announced, "Final game will run at, oh, I don't know, about 22-28 fps," then we'd have a point for discussion. As it is, Gamescom 2016 might be a more appropriate time for that debate.
