SCEA: PS3 Supply May Be "Tight" In Coming Months

They're selling them for $369.95. :lol

some people are doing 250GB's for $500, even saw one for 599 :lol

whenever they get restock, we will pics of mountains of them everywhere :D

So I was informed that my 80GB phat is showing symptoms of an incoming YLOD (Heavy Rain's graphics acting weird). I honestly don't believe it, but who knows. I was looking at stores where I could trade my phat for a slim while its in good condition, but goddamn, its running dry everywhere. Gamestop and Gamecrazy are out of stock, called them this morning. They don't know when the new stock is coming in.

I honestly don't want to sell my phat on Ebay even though I can get pretty good deals. Reason is because I don't wanna sell a potentially faulty system to some dude who is willing to fork out $350 for it. Gamestop said they can only trade about $130 for store-credit. What do you guys suggest I do?

Heavy Rain seems to be a buggy game so I suggest you do nothing. If it breaks I'd contact Sony and pay $150 for a refurbished slim.

Thanks for the advice. Are refurbed Slims reliable?

Edit: I was thinking maybe take the $130 trade value from Gamestop and buy the brand new 120GB slim for $20 more rather than pay $150 for the refurb deal from Sony. But the problem is Gamestop's stock is unreliable.

Its all moot though, because like you said Heavy Rain is glitchy. But I'm trying to be careful.

So what's the deal with the shortage? Is Sony clearing the decks for a new SKU, or a better value proposition at $299?

I got a friend who's looking to take the plunge, but there are no PS3s anywhere!

Finally picked my PS3 up 3 days ago. I recommend looking into the smaller stores. I called up a K-mart about 20 minutes away. They had one shipped to them Wednesday night.
Picked up Uncharted 2, good stuff. What else do I need to get?

it would be pretty stupid for this to be anything other than Sony underestimating demand. Sure, it takes time to ramp up production, but to purposefully hold back consoles right as some huge games release is goddamn insane.

I think Sony said something about PS3 being cheaper to produce in March. Maybe they had some major changes manufacturing it and this is why they had this delay shipping (and will sell it at the same price).

I think Sony didn't understimated demand, since as I remember they aren't going to reach their stimated FY sales, nope?

I know you're probably joking, but in regards to bundling, if they added a wireless device then I assume that it would show up in the FCC documents, since the point of the filing is to show compliance with laws governing wireless communications.

They were on a pace to exceed the estimate. I guess it depends on just how low supply has been this month, and how widespread the shortages have been. Seems like it's a US-only phenomenon. If so, they'll likely make the number anyway.

It'd be nice if some video game journalist would pick up the phone and ask SCEA what the deal is. I guess that's too much to expect.

Uhhhh, what the fuck is this shit? Does Amazon just defer to the resellers if they're out of stock for a set amount of time or something? That's a $70 premium, what the shit?

Yep, same here in germany. Last week i first thought "wtf 355€ for a PS3 from Amazon?" until i saw the "sold from XXXX". Now they are back in stock and are back to 289€

so yeah... 92648 SoCal, gamestops are out of 120 GB and 250GB units... there are some left 90 miles away. And there is an single gamestop with 250GB 20 miles away (i think their search shows 100 mile radius which is >100 gamestops).

unless something happens really fast, sony is so screwed...

Amazon updated my expected arrival date from March 19 - April 28 to March 8. So I guess they are expecting a shipment at the end of the week.

Argh, how annoying. I have $200+ of GameStop credit, and was looking to buy a PS3, but no GameStop within 100 miles has any... Ugh, talk about bad timing.

This is too funny. I didn't believe this story when it first came out. I also didn't believe my friend today when he told me he's been calling all over the place for a ps3 and can't find one. I (we) live in philadelphia, obviously there is no shortage of stores that normally carry consoles but apparently he can't find one anywhere. I still have my doubts that he's tried calling everywhere but I guess this thread does give his story a little more cred.

edit: at work and left out a word

Is this an actual shortage or just much higher demand than usual? In January there were some reports of shortages but the PS3 still sold about the same amount as the 360. Are those numbers going to go down dramatically in February, or is this just an increase in demand?

i don't know if this has anything to do with their supply issues, and the new product codes that we saw recently, but my friends 60gb crapped out on him, and he had an interesting conversation with sony on the phone. they basically told him he could pay them about $30 less if he just gets a 120gb slim shipped to him instead of getting his 60gb repaired. ($150 + shipping + tax)

said they seemed a bit aggressive on the phone with the offer. like they were hoping to not have to keep a phat out in the wild.

Don't know if this has been mentioned in this thread but I heard rumors (via folks I work with in retail) that there's been some sort of labor dispute in China that's impacted PS3 production and caused supply issues. Supposedly said dispute is now cleared up and the little black beauties are now rolling off the assembly line again so hopefully everyone will have them back in stock again soon.

I know that my store used to keep several dozen of the things on hand at all times before Christmas but since the new year hit we've been lucky to get a handful in a shipment and of course those are gone the day we get them. If the same thing is going on in multiple regions (and it sounds like it is) then Sony probably lost alot of money this month in hardware sales.

They've been offering this for a while now. I think it has to do more with them not wanting to keep super old parts in stock to keep fixing the old fat units. Plus, the clock works fine in the slim.

Well, Sony had the ball in their court, they had to do something.

Either way, more stock should be pushed into stores end of this week, beginning of next for GoW3/FFXIII from what retailers are saying.

seems like there was big restock, lots of gamestops have 120 GB now... 250gb is out though ;-)

Amazon still has it too... guess all that doom and gloom was for nothing, eh?

My friend called around to pretty much every electronics store in DE yesterday--none to be found. Not 120 GB, not 250 GB, not even some left over fatties. I'm hoping for a restock sometime around the launch of GOW3, so I can use some various giftcards I've been hoarding, and then I won't have to have it shipped.

My friend though seems more desperate than I am--he's ready to drive into PA and pay tax just to get it this week. :lol

A sentient "fat" PS3 was sent back to 1999 to begin production of the PS3 Slim that continued for a little under a decade so supplies are never again strained.

Don't know if it's just my area but the shortage has only gotten worse recently. I've called every Best Buy, Gamestop, etc within a 50 mile radius and nobody has it nor do they have any idea when they'll get any. From what some have said they havent gotten any shipments in weeks so it seems like a production issue to me.

No major online stores have it either except for Amazon which is through some third party merchant. Damnit, as soon as I'm in the market for the thing they have to disappear. Pretty bad timing with The Show, FF13 and God of War all coming out around the same time. Yikes.
