SCEA: PS3 Supply May Be "Tight" In Coming Months

Now this is a reason for a low supply. If they changed components or manufacturers or something like that, it could have easily affected supply levels as there would have been a time it wasn't being made.

idk why they'd do that during such a crucial period, but it's definitely a more viable excuse than 'lolz, Sony is lying/doing it on purpose'.
Or the SKU simply implies a new color... Kratos branded ps3!

I work at a costco in nyc and we have plenty of ps3's in stock. We've had them in stock for a couple weeks. What's really hard to find is the wii. We haven't gotten a new shipment of wii's in over a month.

Another factor could be that Sony is getting ready to retool thier Fab. chains for a 45 nanometer RSX.
The process shrinks for RSX always seems to be a bout 8 to 10 months behind the process shrinks for Cell.
So we could see A reduced RSX at the end of summer.

I called GameStop and they said they've been out for a while, and already have 9 reserves on the system so even if shipments do come in they'll be put aside for reserved people.

I'm starting to get worried that my wait will be longer than a few days. :s

In the last few weeks, I only saw one 250GB PS3 at a Target. Every Target, Best Buy, GameStop, etc. in my area (and we have tons of stores too) have been sold out of PS3 consoles. Sometimes I see Wii consoles, but not often. 360 can be found pretty much anywhere. I believe the supply problems because I'd have to travel to a GameStop almost two hours away to find a 120GB PS3.

But then again, the median income in my area is a bit high (compared to national average).

Does this mean PS3 will be behind 360 again in NPD? Reports here make it sound like the PS3 is practically sold out.

It seems like it's getting worse. Amazon is out of stock on both the 120 and the 250, and only 1 Best Buy of the 6 in the DC area has 250s. Target appears to have removed all PS3 consoles from their website. What the hell is Sony doing?

I think the likely answer is that the Iranians are buying up PS3's to calculate trajectories and energy yields for their nuclear weapons.

We're all doomed either way.

I have a question to the people that waited until now to get a PS3: Was it because of lack of money? Because it's been six months from when the slim was introduced and it seems many people here don't have a PS3.

Well... on the bright side (for NPD fun), it's likely to crush the 360 when stock re-materialises. Backorders and pent up demand for the win!

I know jack about the tech side of things, but maybe this idea is supported by those new FCC filings?

Don't matter, I'm in an area where the median income is low and there's no 120's to be found.

I was watching a little justin.tv and saw some Heavy Rain gameplay and I was like.. Time to buy a PS3. Drive 5 minutes to my local Wal-mart, nothing, K-mart, nothing, Radioshack, nothing. What sort of bizzaro world is this where stores are out of PS3s? My best bet now if I want one is gamestop, and they only have a refurbished one. Y/n, gaf?

My 60GB launch unit PS3 broke down, so I eventually got the money to get it fixed (3 months) and then a month or so later sold it on craigslist... and now I want a slim.

Bad timing I suppose..

NO, just wait. You can always reserve one at your local GameStop so when they do get them they call and hold it for you. Sony better step this up soon or more problems on the way.

If GoW3 comes out and there are no PS3's on the shelves..

Yeah, I'm not far from D.C. either and can't find them. I once saw a shipment back in January of some, but never saw them again at Best Buy.

I only brought that up since some say they have no problems finding PS3 consoles (like if I travel to another area, it tends to be easier to find PS3 consoles).

I still remember thinking it was crazy how many 120GB PS3 consoles my Best Buy closests to me got it back in September (huge mountains) and they ended up completely selling out of them eventually.

I was shocked last week to hear an area Target employee telling a guy that they had been out of Slims for a while. He searched their database and could only find a single store with them in stock in the central PA region.

I was surprised by the convo because the system could be found all over the place in the days leading up to Christmas.

Maybe this is not total PR bs.

This is probably too close to being a conspiracy theory, but maybe they slowed the shipping rate so they could cause some build up of demand, then flood the market right before Heavy Rain, FFXIII, and/or GOW3 hit. Then they can say those games were responsible for a massive increase in sales.

That's assuming that the "system seller" narrative is good PR above and beyond normal sales figures.

Yup, my Targets are out too, at least two in the area that I know of.

i'm starting to think sony doesn't want to do a price cut on the current models and chose to wait for them to sell out and introduce the new slims with bigger hdd. if it is, fail on sony's part.

I'm going to start buying them up here in Canuckistan and flogging them to you poor USAers. There are shittons of 120gb slims in my neck of the woods.

I'm going to guess and say these new sku's are the arc packed in with the ps3. ;)
Isnt Arc supposed to come out during Fall season? Why would they kill sales for like 6 months or so just to bundle Arc in Sept or something?? Doesnt make sense.

if anyone is willing to travel to bosnia, we have shitload too... a bit expensive as well... >$499 after taxes :lol

So long as SCEA can supply those PS3s for Heavy Rain, Final Fantasy XIII and God of War III they're in the clear. If not, this shit is ridiculous.

I'm waiting for it to go down to around $200 where I live (Croatia). Currently it's at around $400. Since there are only so many PS3 games I really, really want (Uncharted 1 and 2, Valkyria Chronicles, Demon's Souls and The Last Guardian, which isn't even out yet), I don't mind waiting.

You seriously think they would pricecut something that was only price cut with the Slim re-release last fall and still hasn't quite broken even to manufacture yet? What the heck would the pricecut be at this point be? Five bucks?

I don't get this why prevent guaranteed sales for expected sales.

There's no conspiracy, people. The simplest and most likely reasons for PS3 shortages are: 1.) Unexpectedly high demand and 2.) Short supply of a critical part(s) for the Slim.

Do people really think Sony would purposely short-change the supply of PS3s just before GoW3 and Final Fantasy 13 hits? Also, they're on the cusp of reaching their 13 million PS3s target. Why would they sabotage themselves?

How does one search for local stock for target?[/QUOTE]
It seems they removed the listing, so I don't think you can anymore.

there was some restock at amazon (out again now) and gamestops (socal), so shipments might arrive before or maybe sony/stores are sending units in from other areas...

quite interesting to see how this drama/failure unfolds :D

We just got a couple of those old Uncharted bundles (160GB hard-drive). I'm not 100% sure if they're from Sony directly (don't think so) but god damn. I still don't believe that the situation is as grim as Sony makes it seem, other stores seem to have more than enough PS3 but I suppose they just don't sell that well around here.

Amazon again too... I wonder if SCE was just holding a bunch of stock to flood the channel for the March onslaught of games. All stores in my area within 20 miles have them as of this morning now and last week no one did when my brother went to get one.

Checked the gamestops around my area still no go.

Going to wait till March and see if any are in, so I can pick one up.

I am curious about the new design that is being manufactured.

You can always order off their site or walk into a store and reserve one. Or order off Amazon. No tax in most states.

They told me it was going to be two weeks if I reserve one.
I am probably going to try Amazon.

Thanks.
