And software sales are fine, it just doesn't sell as many as the 360, but who'd expect that, what with only 2/3 of the install base in the US.

So Sony advertiesed a 20 gig PS3 that never existed? They never made a 20 gig PS3?OldJadedGamer said:Why would Sony advertise a $499 20 gig unit and purposefully only make the $599 60 gig. They have done it before and if they are doing it now is up in the air. There have been wide reports of the 250gig's being in stock in many places while the 120 is the one that is limited. I'm not saying they are doing this now, but history does show them limiting stock of one item to push another in the recent past.
It now shows that they're using Target as their supplier for 120 GB's.darkwing said:is it just me or is Amazon showing like a 1 to 2 months wait for the 120GB model

Obviously Sony is having some sort of issue as short cutting your supply after your biggest holiday ever and during tax refund season is a move not even they would make. I don't know if it's hard drives (as has been suggested) or larger demand elsewhere in the world or what but at least in my neck of the woods there are no new PS3's.

Supply has a direct correlation to demand. Usu when supply is low it's because demand is high or is increasing on a rate that was not expected. Usually when hardware sales are significantly increasing due to a rise in demand you see some kind of rise in software sales, unless people are just using them to watch movies.

Why the shortage?

omg rite said:I haven't been keeping up with the thread but at the Best Buy I work at (and all surrounding ones), supply has definitely been tight on the 120 since maybe 2 weeks before Christmas. Sometimes on the 250, but not as much.
We get small shipments here and there. But to be honest, I don't see the demand being much more than the 360. They seem to sell at about the same rate when we have both. Either way, if it's like this across the country that's probably a big reason for 360 beating PS3 in January.
If Sony can't fix it or at least not let it get any worse than I've seen it in time for FFXIII and GoW3, I really have very little sympathy. It's hard to not notice that they finally seemed to become real competition for 360 this past fall and now they're saying that at a time when two of the most hyped games in the console's history are about to release, supply might be "tight"?
That's a royal fuck up.

real dirt-bag tactics if true, i wouldn't put it past them heh.itsgreen said:If they know they make less losses if they sell less units, and know they will be able to cut costs in 6 months.
I would say any company...
It makes perfect business sense to shorten supply, to limit your losses, while at the same time being able to say 'omfg we're a such a huge succes, sold out again!'.

Knowingly shorenting supply for no reason at all while having to sell 2.1 million units to make shipment goals? :lol
not knowing what 'tight' supply means? :lol
Constantly checking stores and shit to see if Sony is lying? :lol
Sigh.

Oh btw, I just checked the Best Buys around my area (Chicago) and 6 of them don't have any 250gb in stock. No, I'm not gonna check all the stores in Illinois, I'm not a psycho.

Anyway, not right thread, but close enough, hopefully someone can help.
For no reason whatsoever, my PS3 no longer registers me inserting discs. Games, Blu Ray discs, anything. The PS3 seems to be working fine, but I just can't get any disc I put in there to even register that it's in there let alone boot it. I can load PSN games fine. I have the older 40gig model. I suppose I recently updated the firmware.
Thoughts? Concerns? Fixes?? I really don't want to have to buy a new one!

Wait, no I don't, because you're one of the biggest Sony ass-kissers on this forum.

Sentry said:Just an update, thought it might be relevant to the thread (sorry if similar things have been posted). I went out to buy a new PS3 slim in spite of my previously YLOD PS3 60GB launch unit, and I could get my hands on one ANYWHERE. I went to a Target, a SUPER Target, BestBuy, Walmart, and even Toys'R'Us.. only place I didn't go is GameStop but i'll call tomorrow.
I have a friend at Target who'll call me when shipments arrive though, thankfully.

LOL, so now them being in stock = no one wants them. I'm stating that the "tight" inventory is location specific since they are widly available in my area. Quit being so defensive.
You know you can check this information in under a minute... if that long.
