Screen Digest: "Nintendo behind the next gen curve; isolated from market"

Doomed.

Research firm Screen Digest has suggested that Nintendo is behind the curve in a number of fields when it comes to next generation consoles.

While Wii U was first to market, senior principal analyst and head of games at Screen Digest Piers Harding-Rolls expects the next generation Xbox to launch this year, with PS4 following in 2014, and believes Nintendo will be playing catch up in a number of areas.

He told Edge: "We believe Nintendo looks increasingly isolated in the market. It does not have the luxury of a wider device ecosystem play such as Sony, Apple or Microsoft and it is behind the curve in its online and cloud content strategies.

"We would like to see Nintendo be more aggressive in 'hinging' off its devices using its online platform - Nintendo Network - onto third-party devices as Microsoft is starting to do with Xbox Smartglass and Sony is doing with PlayStation Mobile
.

"Neither of these solutions is significant at present but it does show that these companies are willing to engage users on the most popular third-party connected devices to drive relevance for their own products."

Harding-Rolls also expects Microsoft and Sony to more widely adopt subsidized pricing models for new hardware. "This will keep the platforms relatively competitive," he said. "Nintendo will be late to adopt a subsidized pricing strategy but could be forced to examine it if Microsoft and Sony push forward with it."

"Nintendo is DOOOOMED!"

Where have I heard that one before...

Eight years ago: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_1/6-The-Contrarian

When gamers talk about how gaming is everywhere, how game culture has permeated everything, they miss this lesson. The success of our hobby is the jackboot sheathing the downward-driving foot of global commerce, and the snapping neck beneath its heel is innovation.

This is why Nintendo is doomed.

Okay, not entirely. Nintendo's hardware is doomed. The Game Boy? Drowning. Gamecube? Buried. Revolution? Dead on arrival. Sony and Microsoft have begun the process of cleaning their clock, and there's just a bit of dust on the minute hand still left to go.

The thing about Nintendo that keeps me awake at night is that they've always innovated. When they made the leap to 3D with Mario 64, they designed the controller to fit the game. Shigeru Miyamoto understood that camera control was the single biggest challenge of 3D gaming, and he wanted a controller that would support his camera solution. He was spot on: nine years later, games still routinely ship with crappy camera controls. It's not because the developers are lazy; it's because cameras are hard. Miyamoto and his colleagues at Nintendo realized this and they didn't screw around. They built the platform to support the game.

I thought that was established this gen. Sony and MS are pretty much just competing against themselves now while Nintendo is in its own independent market. Valve/Steambox will be stepping in next-gen to fill that 3rd competitor hole left by Nintendo.

How many endless years will we have analysts tell us how Nintendo needs to "conform to the market" before they realize that Nintendo is its own market.

This is not established at all, and is a pretty ridiculous comment by and large.

Nothing of the sort was established.

Aaaaaamazing.

It sounds familiar...doesn't it...

2005:

Nintendo's hardware is doomed. The Game Boy? Drowning. Gamecube? Buried. Revolution? Dead on arrival. Sony and Microsoft have begun the process of cleaning their clock, and there's just a bit of dust on the minute hand still left to go.

2013:

Nintendo's hardware is doomed. The 3DS? Drowning. Wii? Buried. Wii U? Dead on arrival. Sony and Microsoft have begun the process of cleaning their clock, and there's just a bit of dust on the minute hand still left to go.

If there's one thing I've learnt over the years, it's that you can't predict Nintendo's performance.

The article makes some good points, but it's nothing we haven't heard before...

Our site isn't getting enough hits, time for another Nintendo is doomed article

You don't understand!

Apple is doomed! They've peaked and now they're doomed!

Microsoft is doomed! Windows 8 is an utter failure and they're going bankrupt!

Sony is doomed! No one is buying their TVs!

Nintendo is doomed! Wii U and 3DS are failures!

Everyone is doomed!

For real though it's starting to drive me batty.

"Nintendo is failing because they haven't implemented [______] that Competing Console B has implemented."

Why do all the machines need to be the same? Why must there be feature parity, why must they have similar goals, why must they shoot for similar markets? Who came up with the RULE that "the market" is a homogenous thing that must be approached by all comers in the same fashion and from the same direction? Just because one machine does something cool, why do all of the other machines HAVE TO DO IT OH GOD OH MAN better do it, better do the same thing all over the place. Better have three identical machines, because choice is bad, and different methods are stupid.

Why can't a Nintendo console just be a thing, and a Sony console be a thing, and a Microsoft console be a thing, and they are things, and we buy them.

We have Nintendo Directs all the time. The gaming media hardly ever bat an eyelid. What is it about this one that has everyone so up in arms that they feel compelled to come crawling out of the woodwork proclaiming nonsense?

The mayans were right, they just got the dates wrong.

Nintendo - the only company doomed twice a week. Is it just me or is it strange how many bad arcticles pop up just right after a more than decent Nintendo direct? Butt hurt journalists because Nintendo cut them out or some doritos involved?

Nah.. maybe just the good old Nintendo is doomed song.
