Screen going black when using PS3

Recently, my screen has gone black twice while using my PS3. Both have happened while playing Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete. Well, the first time was obviously during the game, the second, not so sure about.

It first happened about 5 days ago and right in the middle of a battle, the screen just went black. The sound was fine, but no matter what I did, I couldn’t exit out of the game. I tried hitting the Playstation button and it did go silent as in indicating it registered, but I couldn’t see the menu that would pop up from hitting the button.

It happened again last night. I was just finishing Lunar 2 and hit the Playstation button to quit the game. After selecting “Quit game”, instead of taking me to my PS3 desktop, the screen went black again.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? And has this happened to anyone else? If so, what was the eventual diagnosis and what was done to fix it?

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have had a black screen happen a couple of times when transitioning from the XMB to a game. I assumed it had to do with HDMI handshaking and I just turned the TV off and back on again and everything was fine.

Try limiting your resolution to 720p/1080i. My brother bought a cheap HDMI cable which acts all sorts of crazy @ 1080p, yet functions fine with any other resolution.

Check to make sure you HDMI is fit snuggly, I know it sounds like an easy fix, but it has happened to me on more than one occasion. Also, be careful with that plug because if you unplug the system a lot the HDMI slot can widen and cause it to not sit tightly.

So are guys saying it could be a loose cable? :lol

Thing is the system boots up again when I have to shut it down. Wouldn’t the screen remain black if the cable was loose? And I am using HDMI.

Either yes loose or just a shitty HDMI cable. I have a pretty decent one that i bought a while back and when I switch back and forth between VGA and HDMI on my monitor sometimes it'll flicker so I have to turn off my monitor and turn it back on. Actually, I need a new HDMI cable, what a good cheap one? =P

This happened to me after LittleBigPlanet's release and I stressed my PS3 a lot playing it nonstop for a week or two, eventually it started turning white too. PS3 died a couple days later (60gb). Had to send it in for repair. I would advise that you back up your data.

This used to happen with Resistance FoM all the time when loadign the game up, all I had to do was turn the power to the TV off and turn it back on and all was good. I even found that just changing the input and going back worked. I don't even have the problem anymore, I think my Samsung realized it was made to be married to my PS3 and now they are deeply in love.:D

Ugh. Don’t tell me that. And I can’t even back up my PS3 saves.

I will try the other suggestions. If it happens again I’ll push the HDMI cable in and see if it gives me my screen back. If it does, I know it’s the connection or a bad cable. I’ll also try the changing input and turning off tv trick. Problem is if that does work, still doesn’t tell me what’s wrong.

some tvs have problems with hdmi handshakes. i remember when my dad got his samsung, it would go black all the time with his hd receiver. i'm sure other manufactures have this issues as well.

Does your TV have a "Game Mode" setting for the HDMI input you are using? If so, change the settings on the TV for that input. I think that's what I did to ultimately fix it.

No, don't have a Game Mode. My tv is a 60" Sony SXRD.

As for the handshake issue, wouldn’t that be something that plagues you from when you purchased the tv? Like I said, I’ve had the tv for about 2 ½ years now and have not had this issue until just now.
