Screw it! I finally bought a Wii U

EDIT: WARNING ABOUT THE W101 DEMO: IT ISN'T AT ALL REFLECTIVE OF WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO JUMP INTO THE PRODUCT. Starting up the game was a smooth, fun experience. Playing the demo was confusing nonsense.

Listen to all the people telling you to investigate the wii library. So much good stuff. Go find that "150 wii games and I want more!" thread and browse. Keep an open mind. It was an absolutely wonderful console.

The Wonderful 101

Yep definitely.

Also check out Pikmin 3 (one of my favorite games of last year), Monster hunter 3 ultimate (if you don't mind hunt, loot, and grind type games), and Nintendo Land if you got people to co-op with. If you like Musou games, warriors orochi 3 hyper is pretty good.

Edit: Oh yeah, if you haven't checked out the Wii library, please do so. There's so many great games on the Wii.

Welcome to the team, dont be afraid to buy 3rd party games for it.

Exclusive 3rd party games like the ones people have listed are great. Only way to play some unique games. But I would stay away from multi-platform games. I got burned by getting Batman: Arkham Origins.

I got a Hori screen protector for my GamePad. I'd recommend it.

Also, NSMBU and 3D World are worth playing.

A screen protector is nice and easy to put on. You don't even notice it. I loved NSMBU, but after 3D World, not sure I could go back!

Local multiplayer in Nintendoland is absolutely godly. If local multiplayer is a part of your life at all, buy that game.

I always hear this but I never really see it in action. The first time a bunch of people are exposed to Nintendoland, things are great. Luigi's Mansion and Mario Chase are instantly fun. And if you have some more videogame savvy folks, co-op Legend of Zelda is great. But I've never had someone want to play those games at a subsequent get together.

Welcome to our small family.

I suggest Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Earthbound, Toki Tori 2+, Wonderful 101, Super Mario 3D World, DK: Tropical Freeze, and many others I probably missed.

Not my experience. All have been good for multiple events with repeated guests for me, and the multiple-game-sequence thingy added new life when we finally noticed it as well.

Come on - why would you do this?
;)

(Welcome to the club - I got mine when Rakuten/eBay were selling the NSMBU bundles for $249. I strongly recommend Super Mario 3D World, as does everyone else. I haven't played Wonderful 101 myself, but it seems to be a popular choice too. Either way, enjoy what's out there, but don't expect a whole lot more.)

As for Wonderful 101, does it have a demo on the eShop? Whilst it does look really cool I'm not sure it would be for me but I haven't had a proper look at it.

It does have a demo, but it's not a game that demos very well. The demo just drops you into the first chapter with no context, and finishes halfway through.

The game takes quite a while to 'click', and it's not going to by playing the demo.

And apart from that, the over the top cutscenes and QTE's and the dialog etc is like half of what makes the game so amazing, the demo doesn't show that at all.

Don't be afraid to try the W101 demo several times, it's a good game but not everyone like it.
I finished it but not at 100% and loved my time playing this game <3

Yes it's a brilliant game if only I could get something other than consolation prizes...but I'm still on my first play through.

Wonderful 101 and Monster Hunter I my most played Wii U games. Zombi U is great but it's scary and it stressed me too much to finish.

Skippable cutscenes in W101 won my heart.

Good decision, it's a great console! As for game recommendations...

Retail (also on eShop) - Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D World, The Wind Waker HD, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Sonic Lost World, New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, Rayman Legends, Nintendo Land

eShop - Mutant Mudds Deluxe (also on PS3), NES Remix, Nano Assault Neo, Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien (also on other platforms), Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition

Virtual Console - You probably already know what you want here (not that the selection is very wide), but don't forget that EarthBound is on the Wii U VC!

Also, definitely go back and investigate/play any of the amazing Wii titles you might have missed!

Like I said earlier, there is a demo, but it's not the most self-explanatory thing out there. This video personally sold me on giving the demo a try and eventually buying the game.

It's good to hear that there is a demo. I just watched a decent gameplay vid and my interest went from tepid to LETS HAVE SOME! So the demo will probably sell me fully.

I definitely won't cast ZombiU aside I would have picked it up had it not been bundled in anyway. It looks like a great game even though I know it is said to have flaws.

Personally I have never been able to get into Monster Hunter games, I tried the 3DS version of 3 but still wasn't a fan. I'll keep an open mind if there is a demo however.

I know that a screen protector isn't necessary but I definitely want one so does anyone have any suggestions? Is the official one alright or what about the Hori whatsit?

That's great. People harp on the WiiU and yes, it does have some issues but when the games are good, the GAMES ARE GOOD. I recommend Wonderful 101, Mario Bros WiiU, Mario 3-D and Lego Undercover. All great games however, Lego has some serious load times. MK8 is on the horizon and is looking to be out of this world good.

The demo has had mixed responses. Some say it's too much too soon and they felt overwhelmed so they passed, others gave it a shot and it cemented their decision to buy.

I was among the latter, so I say try the demo and fiddle with the buttons so you can see what your guys can do and use the control stick to make your morphs. First try I had no idea what I was doing and got the lowest rank possible. I tried it a second time and easily got a gold as everything clicked.

It's one of those games where the frustration comes at myself because I goofed. Every enemy attack and situation has a tell and appropriate response, and the game is learning what those are and becoming stylish as hell when doing them.

The ZombiU bundle includes a digital copy of Nintendoland so you won't need to buy that. They're both really solid titles. ZombiU is actual survival horror and has an awesome local 2p mode. Nintendoland may consist of minigames but they have a lot of depth, both for 1p and multiplayer.

My favourite Wii U games:
Tropical Freeze
3D World
Wonderful 101
Pikmin 3
Wind Waker HD
NSMBU/NSLU

Wii U may not have a lot of games but the few it does are amongst the best in their class.

I just managed to snag a Wii U premium with the ZombiU bundle (with the Pro controller) for a good price brand new from eBay. I kept thinking should I? Shouldn't I? to all the recent deals/bundles that have recently been going around but I ended up deciding too late since all the good deals are now back to normal. When I saw the eBay listing I decided screw it lets just buy one. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze has been tempting me with its soundtrack and speed-run videos and there's quite a few games I've been wanting to play.

Zombi-U-bundle.jpg

The upcoming titles like Smash Bros. Mario Kart 8 etc. that sealed the deal for me. Now what I want to know is.. as a new Wii U owner what do I need?

I'm quite protective of my consoles so does the Gamepad need a case? Which screen protector is best? Should I pick up a Wiimote+? High-capacity battery?.. I've got ZombiU obviously, and I also got Windwaker HD as well as Rayman Legends. Super Mario 3D world and DKC:TF will be bought soon. What am I missing? What eShop titles are worth the time? How do I go about linking my 3DS XL if that is even a thing? Is there a GAF friend code doc?

I'm excited to finally jump back onto a Nintendo home console.. Now just gimme a Pokemon MMO!

I have had my wii u for about 3 months and you basically just listed my game collection, all of those games are great. I also have W101 and MH3U which are solid, yet niche, titles. I also still want to pick up Pikmin 3 and NSMBU as well as Deus Ex: HR.

As far as the future goes... In addition to what you listed; X, Bayonetta 2 and the Zelda beat-em-up should all be released within the year.

I'm on the edge of getting one myself, all i'm waiting for is a decent price for both the console and 3D World.
I mean, with the likes of Smash Bro's and Mario Kart on the horizon, it'd be rude not to get one.

Welcome!

Get:
Wonderful 101
Super Mario 3D World
Pikmin 3
Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze

If you want an amazing game with online multiplayer there's Monster Hunter!

Yes to the demo, its also on most Wii U kiosks in stores. Wonderful 101 really isn't complicated, think of it as a top down action game where you draw simple shapes (touchscreen or right stick, I prefer right stick) to change into different weapons. It takes a while to get used to dodging, parrying, and comboing everything in sight with multiple weapons simultaneous but you get used to the motions after an hour or two.. A must if you're a fan of action games like DMC, Bayonetta, MGR, etc.

Like most Wii U exclusives, Wonderful 101 also has local multiplayer (upto 4p in W101)

If you play COD, do yourself a favor and play with the wiimote pointer controls.
Be sure to go thru the controller settings (dead boxs, speeds, sensitivities, etc)

Crap, dude. I guess you missed the PS4 back at amazon thread, huh?

Just kidding. Love my PS4, but love the Wii U too. ZombiU is a great game -- I wish Ubi could justify a sequel.

Welcome to the club.

I need to do this.

I basically stay 1st/2nd party with mine. Got Tekken Tag Tournament 2 because of the additions and the fact that it's like $10.

Have more(Physical) games for that now than my 360 and PS4.

Welcome to the club! It's a club where cool people who know their gaming hang out, so well done :)

My recommendations:

Nintendoland
NSMBU / NSLU
Wonderful 101
Pikmin 3
Lego City
Sonic Racing
Tropical Freeze
SM3DW

Eshop:
Toki Tori 2+
Trine 2
Castlestorm
NES Remix
BIT TRIP 2
Kung Fu Rabbit
Knytt Underground

Welcome...to desert of the real.

I'd recommend TW101, Lego City Undercover and Pikmin 3.

On eShop, if you haven't played them: Little Inferno, The Cave, Runner 2 and Trine 2 are great versions of each game. Nano Assault Neo is also an awesome exclusive indy title.

Official screen protector pack is fine. Comes with a decent cloth too.

I'd get a Wiimote+ if I were you, and a battery expansion for the GamePad will pay for itself with lengthy ZombiU sessions.

Have fun!

Edit: Oh yeah and Deus Ex HR: DC is definitely worth a double dip. It's a terrific port.

Off-tv is neat but hardly worth double-dipping for.

well it's not out yet so it was just a heads up in case he wanted to single-dip on the Wii U. I've seen a lot of people say they do most of their VC/eShop gaming on the Upad so it was just something to consider.

my last name is not Costanza

*cracks open my amazon "whenever I get a wiiu or next nintendo console" wishlist*

the must haves

Mario Kart 8
Smash Bros
DK: Tropical Freeze
Bayonetta
Wonderful 101
ZombiU
Pikmin 3
New! Super Mario Bros and New Luigi add-on

That's about it. I still haven't seen much about X to get a good feeling out of it and we know nothing of FExSMT but that would no doubt be excellent.

No 3D World?

Yes! W101 demo is not indicative of the actual game.

Super Mario 3D World
Nintendoland ( if you play with friends a lot, three friends and beers and good time guaranteed)
Windwaker HD
Deus Ex: HR ( if you haven't already played it, awesome gamepad use)
Rayman Legends

I don't know what territory you are in, but Amazon US has a lot of Wii U games for fairly cheap. (Pretty sure someone has said this.)

Super Mario 3D World and Wonderful 101 are two of the best games I've played last year.

Playing Donkey Kong right now, and it's pretty great too!

The Wonderful 101 is a game you should get if you love action-heavy titles that reward exploration of skill, combat and attentiveness, with rich amounts of replay value, bonus content, challenges and areas for you to find and explore. It's a game that pushes you to your limit but makes you feel on top of the world, and is one of the most incredible adventures, story and location-wise, in recent history. If you've ever seen Gurren Lagann, this game is the closest thing you'll get to ever playing a game that feels like that show; from the humble beginnings to the bombastic endings. It may not be a Nintendo IP in the purest sense, but for something that was made for Nintendo and belongs to them it easily has the thought poured into it to be sitting among the big leagues. Personally, my favorite game of 2013.

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is a platformer that is challenging but incredibly pleasant. It's a feast to the eyes and ears, with some of the most dynamic worlds that platforming has to offer. Everything is an exercise in your skill of mastering the physics and applying them to ever-evolving level exclusive gimmicks. It seems evident you're already going with this title, and I can't recommend it enough. It's a great choice. It honors it's legacy not just through subtle reflections on the times it came from but the times that lie ahead, and is practically a definitive sequel.

Super Mario 3D World is killer, and while it may be on the easy side it has an elevated level of charm to it. It takes all the best elements from all previous iterations of 3D Mario and combine them into what is almost a "best of". Making your first footsteps with Mario in a new definition is, as always, a joy to witness and control. The added characters also add some new twists to levels and add plentiful of variety. It is also a massive game, and if you are a completionist you will be sitting on it for quite some time.

Pikmin 3 is a pleasant-as-hell game. It's an enjoyable strategy game that really feels more about exploring the world and enjoying the spectacle of your labor. There's a sense of accomplishment to be had at the end of the day to see your resources utilized to that ever-so-satisfying food consumption.

Some other titles I can heartily recommend on the eShop and/or depending on your tastes are Earthbound (assuming you haven't played this marvelous game already), Nano Assault Neo, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, DX:HR Director's Cut and NES Remix.

I'm curious, how much was the bundle on eBay?

It was £190 which is how much the default premium pack was previously going for on Amazon so I got lucky!

I got a Hori screen protector for my GamePad. I'd recommend it.

I missed this, thanks for the suggestions I've ordered a pack :)

The ZombiU bundle includes a digital copy of Nintendoland so you won't need to buy that. They're both really solid titles.

I'm in the UK and as far as I know the Nintendoland digital pack-in is exclusive to the North American release?

The best motion gaming based platformer, Donkey Kong Crashcours, is in Nintendo Land. You should try it, Nintendo Land is not a party game, it's more arcade than party.

TW101 demo sold me. I had no clue what the hell I was doing, but it felt so "video game" unlike so much of the stuff we've seen over the past decade on the HD twins.

After you buy it, commit to blasting out unites on the right thumb stick. I was using the touch screen until chapter five or so. The touch screen is just too slow. The stick is more forgiving than I expected.

Good stuff man. We always welcome new Wii U owners.

There are also
  • Hori screen protector - Bought one since launch and I still see no scratches.
  • Wii U pro controller - Great controller
  • Mayflash Wii U USB PC adapter - If you also play on PC and want to use the awesome Wii U pro controller
  • Extended battery - For those extended gaming sessions
  • USB Hard drive and y cable - If you are a digital download kind of gamer(Tons of eshop games coming soon)
