Screw it! I finally bought a Wii U

Anecdotal but New Super Mario Bros U, Super Mario 3D World, Nintendo Land and Wii Sports Club (bowling/golf) have far and away had the most play time with friends. I wouldn't buy NSMBU and 3D World at the same time because they are quite big games but the others would go well together.

I came in to post TW101, but the first reply already covered that.

Instead I'd recommend you take advantage of the BC (presuming you never bought a Wii, like I never) and pick up Metroid Trilogy and Xenoblade Chronicles.

Exclusive 3rd party games like the ones people have listed are great. Only way to play some unique games. But I would stay away from multi-platform games. I got burned by getting Batman: Arkham Origins.

A screen protector is nice and easy to put on. You don't even notice it. I loved NSMBU, but after 3D World, not sure I could go back!

I always hear this but I never really see it in action. The first time a bunch of people are exposed to Nintendoland, things are great. Luigi's Mansion and Mario Chase are instantly fun. And if you have some more videogame savvy folks, co-op Legend of Zelda is great. But I've never had someone want to play those games at a subsequent get together.

I actually have arkham orgins, its kinda fucked up on all versions of it actually.

I'm in the UK and as far as I know the Nintendoland digital pack-in is exclusive to the North American release?

I believe so. I think the Zombi U pack in EU was the game + pro-controller in addition to the Wii U console and pad (and other premium extras).

Hori screen protector is on its way with another free amazon Prime trial.. they keep handing them out

Probably going to pull the trigger on DKC:TF since it's £32.99 on Amazon UK. I'm trying to find Super Mario 3D World for a similar price as opposed to the £40 found pretty much everywhere but no luck so far.

What set ups do people have in terms of local multiplayer? Obviously I'd have the gamepad, with the pro controller that is bundled in being player 2.. Two more pro controllers would be pretty costly on top of everything else. I'm not a digital guy yet so I doubt I'll need an external HDD thankfully.

as a new Wii U owner what do I need?

Zombi U
Lego City Undercover
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Nintendo Land
NSMB U and NSL U
Rayman Legends
Wonderful 101
Pikmin 3
Wind Waker HD
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
Super Mario 3D World
Lego Marvel
Some good eshop games out there also, like Runner 2 and soon Shovel Knight

Obviously, some games depend on your tastes. You may not want more NSMB. These are most of the top games, though. There are plenty of other good games as well, depending on whether you already have them or not or are interested at all, such as Tekken, Blacklist, CoD, Ass Creed, and so on.

Just got my NSMB + Luigi Bundle last week as well. I picked up W101 and Zombie U before I got the system due to fact that they might have been hard to find later on. They were also at a good price. Anyone have issues with the gamepad disconnecting every few minutes with the system? Mine is real close to my router ( Netgear WNDR4500 ) and I haven't tried moving it yet due to my furniture and time. It seemed fine the first night but other nights it's been pretty bad. Would using a USB LAN adapter help? Other than that, I love the way HD Nintendo games look on my TV compared to the Wii.

I'd grab two of the Wiimotes with Motion+ built in if possible.

The Wonderful 101 is a game you should get if you love action-heavy titles that reward exploration of skill, combat and attentiveness, with rich amounts of replay value, bonus content, challenges and areas for you to find and explore. It's a game that pushes you to your limit but makes you feel on top of the world, and is one of the most incredible adventures, story and location-wise, in recent history. If you've ever seen Gurren Lagann, this game is the closest thing you'll get to ever playing a game that feels like that show; from the humble beginnings to the bombastic endings. It may not be a Nintendo IP in the purest sense, but for something that was made for Nintendo and belongs to them it easily has the thought poured into it to be sitting among the big leagues. Personally, my favorite game of 2013.

This is such a good summary. Bravo.

Games I'd recommend for the system thus far.
WONDERFUL 101 (yes, it's a new IP and priority 1. Use the W101 OT to help you play)
Mario 3D World
DKC Tropical Freeze
Earthbound (on eShop)
Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed
Lego City Undercover
Sonic Lost World
Entire Wii Library

Eventually Get/Look Into
X
Bayonetta 2
Mario Kart 8
SSB

Pretty soon, you'll be looking for some toilet games, so I would recommend Zelda II and Renegade on the VC. Both hard as nails games, perfect for poop and play.

First up;

Earthbound if you haven't played it
Pikmin 3
Mario 3D

and i'm loving NBA 2K13 but you may as well play it on xbox or something as the pad offers nothing.

W101 is one hell of a game. It's similar to Kid Icarus in a lot of ways only not as sharp with its wit and design. However, the inventiveness, the heart, the pure adolescent joy that One Piece so constantly nails, it's ALL THERE.

Platinum's best game. Apologies to our girl Bayonetta.

This is the advice I would give as well. The backwards compatibility is a great feature. You do need the wii mote though, which aren't too expensive. As for wii u games. Try out some demos on the e-shop. Be sure to join club Nintendo and the digital deluxe program as well.

The ZombiU bundle includes a digital copy of Nintendoland so you won't need to buy that. They're both really solid titles. ZombiU is actual survival horror and has an awesome local 2p mode. Nintendoland may consist of minigames but they have a lot of depth, both for 1p and multiplayer.

My favourite Wii U games:
Tropical Freeze
3D World
Wonderful 101
Pikmin 3
Wind Waker HD
NSMBU/NSLU

Wii U may not have a lot of games but the few it does are amongst the best in their class.

quoted for truth. if only more people looked past it's flaws.

I don't have it fully disconnect but I'd say 50% of the time the signal to the gamepad is really choppy. I can't figure out what's interfering with it and it can happen within a metre of the console. I find moving away our iPhones might help but realistically that's probably not doing anything.

I can't say much that hasn't already been repeated.

Hori Screen protector for the tablet, make sure you beat ZombiU, Wonderful 101 is a must.

Keep a lookout for deals on the eShop cards, and with everyone saying Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, the Capcom online store has them on sale for $30 until March 23rd. I jumped on the same deal back in January, and it was worth every penny. Best Buy also tends to sell the eShop cards for a 10% or 20% discount (I can't remember which), but that only helps if you live in the states. Canada am cri.

Again, Pikmin 3, Deus Ex, Lego City, SM3DW, DKC:TF, and so much more.

For eShop games, DuckTales Remastered is also nostalgia overload, even if you barely remember the cartoon as was the case with me, that theme song is still stuck in my head (and I still can't beat the final level!) Nano Neo Assault is also fun, Trine 2 is good, keep an eye out for 90s Arcade Racer whenever that releases.

To be honest, I don't know if I can justify NES Remix at $15, to me it seems too steep of a price, maybe someone else can give a better opinion.

I have never been so hesitant to buy a Nintendo console than I am the Wii U. It's weird. I've owned them all, not counting portables. I don't normally game on portables.

Funnily enough I ordered a game or two last week just because I saw them at a good price and knew I'd pick the system up later down the line haha.

Nice. Not many unhappy Wii U owners out there but unfortunately the praise gets drowned out in a sea of unreasonable hate. So many people hate the thing for superficial reasons and like to see consoles as an 'investment', which I'll never understand. Why 'invest' when you can play here and now, for a fraction of the price?

I'm open to buying a PS4 or Xbone, but first there's gotta be an exclusive I'm interested in (I have a nice PC). All this 'investment' talk is for things that appreciate in value, not game consoles.

I really wish I could recommend W101, but I really didn't like the game. If you like Platinum, then it's probably a no brainer.

Super Mario 3D World is the best game on the console, and you should also get Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Wind Waker HD, and New Super Mario Bros. U.

I'm wondering this too. Some of the games already out, Smash Brothers, the upcoming Zelda and Metroid games. I'll end up getting one. Might wait for Christmas.

Glad to see that you got a Wii U! Hope you enjoy yourself with all the awesome games! If you like Pikmin on the Gamecube, you'll love Pikmin 3. Rayman Legends is a must have on the console (assuming you don't have it on another platform). A lot of other choices were recommended already.

I just managed to snag a Wii U premium with the ZombiU bundle (with the Pro controller) for a good price brand new from eBay. I kept thinking should I? Shouldn't I? to all the recent deals/bundles that have recently been going around but I ended up deciding too late since all the good deals are now back to normal. When I saw the eBay listing I decided screw it lets just buy one. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze has been tempting me with its soundtrack and speed-run videos and there's quite a few games I've been wanting to play.

Zombi-U-bundle.jpg

The upcoming titles like Smash Bros. Mario Kart 8 etc. that sealed the deal for me. Now what I want to know is.. as a new Wii U owner what do I need?

I'm quite protective of my consoles so does the Gamepad need a case? Which screen protector is best? Should I pick up a Wiimote+? High-capacity battery?.. I've got ZombiU obviously, and I also got Windwaker HD as well as Rayman Legends. Super Mario 3D world and DKC:TF will be bought soon. What am I missing? What eShop titles are worth the time? How do I go about linking my 3DS XL if that is even a thing? Is there a GAF friend code doc?

I'm excited to finally jump back onto a Nintendo home console.. Now just gimme a Pokemon MMO!

Congrats on the pick up!! It already has a nice library!

What are your plans? Local Multiplayer? Only SP? If you plan on local MP you need at least 2 wiimotes+

I really enjoyed Lego City, NSMBU/NSLU and ZombiU. I also enjoyed Black Ops 2 and AC 3 with the gamepad enhancements. Most of the time the gamepad is downplayed by those who don´t have the system, AC3´s implementation is rather simple, but having that map accessible all the time is really handy.

From the eshop I only have Nano Assault, Trine 2 and Little Inferno, all of which I enjoyed.

I have a confession to make. I need to pick up W101 and Pikmin 3 still, but DKC TF is my kind of game, so I will get that first.

I also plan to get Deus Ex HR, CoD Ghosts, Batman AC, AC 4 and NFSMWU.

I have a young brother and I'm sure my girlfriend will like stuff like Nintendoland so I'll probably need to get at least one. I'm guessing Nunchuks are needed alongside?

This is getting expensive :3

Most of nintendoland can be played without a nunchuk.

Congrats! Lots of good stuff out there. Though, i would definitely recommend getting a remote+ and a nunchuck. Better to have all of your bases covered. Also, definitely pick up LEGO City Undercover. Great game.

Just to get on to your actual questions:

--Protection? Looks like you've already answered the screen protector issue, but if you ever want to let your GamePad's balls swing free, I'd say go for it. Like you, I take care of my gaming stuff; all I need is a good microfiber towel and a little glass cleaner here and there and that thing shines.

--Wiimotes? Yes, absolutely. If you don't have any Wii Remotes lying around, get a Wii Remote+ or two. This answers your multiplayer question as well -- most games offer you the choice of many controllers. So with a GamePad, a Pro Controller and a Wii Remote+/Nunchuck combo, you'll be good for many games. And you're right -- don't go with third party controllers, you'll just get a headache. NoA offers refurbished Remote/Chuck combos for $20; not sure if there's a similar deal in the UK:

https://store.nintendo.com/webapp/w...atalogId=10001&storeId=10001&categoryId=70706

--Battery? You know, I think this issue is overblown. The Deluxe set you've got with comes with a snazzy charger/docking cradle. The GamePad battery is good for about 3-4 hours. Personally, it's rare for me to sit down and game for that long -- when I'm not playing, I just put the thing in the charger. It looks good, it's always charged. If you regularly play for 5 hours at a time, sure, the battery might be a good investment.

--Here's a tutorial for linking an existing 3DS account (Nintendo Network ID) to a new Wii U ID:

Might be back later with those game recommendations, but with your lineup, you're off to a very solid start. Enjoy it, man.

speaking of eshop titles: Never owned a 3ds. I see Resident Evil Revelations is available. Really like REmake, 2, & 4. Should I cop it?
I loved Resident Evil Revelations on the Wii U! Raid Mode is quite addictive, the main game is fun and actually creepy at times. I highly recommend it, but if you aren't sure, you could rent or borrow it.

The upcoming titles like Smash Bros. Mario Kart 8 etc. that sealed the deal for me. Now what I want to know is.. as a new Wii U owner what do I need?

What type of games do you like?

If you like Action games I'd recommend Wonderful 101, its great.

Platformers, stuff like Bit Trip Runner, 3D World, and Rayman.

If you also like these types of games, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate has a very helpful community and has lots of content.

Pikmin 3 is also a good game too, although its exact genre its hard to pinpoint exactly.

Because most people will recommend all the usual suspects, I say you should take a look at Most Wanted U.
Ignore the complaints of the PS360 release. This version has the DLC on disc, looks better and you can choose to jump to events and one-click to start driving any car you want.

Also, Deus Ex Directors Cut. Dat gamepad augmentation!!!
