Screw it! I finally bought a Wii U

I just managed to snag a Wii U premium with the ZombiU bundle (with the Pro controller) for a good price brand new from eBay. I kept thinking should I? Shouldn't I? to all the recent deals/bundles that have recently been going around but I ended up deciding too late since all the good deals are now back to normal. When I saw the eBay listing I decided screw it lets just buy one. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze has been tempting me with its soundtrack and speed-run videos and there's quite a few games I've been wanting to play.

Zombi-U-bundle.jpg

The upcoming titles like Smash Bros. Mario Kart 8 etc. that sealed the deal for me. Now what I want to know is.. as a new Wii U owner what do I need?

I'm quite protective of my consoles so does the Gamepad need a case? Which screen protector is best? Should I pick up a Wiimote+? High-capacity battery?.. I've got ZombiU obviously, and I also got Windwaker HD as well as Rayman Legends. Super Mario 3D world and DKC:TF will be bought soon. What am I missing? What eShop titles are worth the time? How do I go about linking my 3DS XL if that is even a thing? Is there a GAF friend code doc?

I'm excited to finally jump back onto a Nintendo home console.. Now just gimme a Pokemon MMO!

You sir just got the best next gen console for now. Mario, donkey Kong. Wonderful 101. Mario kart coming. Awesome sauce

Yea, WiiU 32Gb + Nintendo Land is 199€ in my country's GAME, which means I don't have much of a choice but to finally buy it!
And MK8 release date is close, so... Yea

My collection:

Zombi U (you already have it, great game)
Pikmin 3 (recommended, a bit short though)
New Super Mario Bros. U (the best NSMB game)
New Super Luigi U (a good challenge, but a bit short)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution DC (great game with good use of the game pad. Might get a bit repeatative in the end)
Lego City Undercover (I'm currently playing and seems to be great fun, except the load times)
Mass Effect 3: SE (great game)
Splinter Cell: Blacklist (haven't played it)
Nintendo Land (fun minigame collection. Decent amount of single player content, so doesn't require friends to play with)

And I have yet to buy some great games like Assassin's Creed IV, Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong: TF. And more upcoming games like Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros. 4, X, Watch Dogs.

eshop:
Toki Tori (great and challenging puzzle game)
Toki Tori 2+ (another great and challenging puzzle game. Kind of like open world design instead of levels like in Toki Tori 1)
Trine 2: DC (great game with somewhat faulty physics/controls)
Knytt Underground (haven't played yet)
D&D: Chronicles of Mystara (haven't played much yet. Pretty difficult beat'em up it seems)

I'm also interested in games like UnEpic and NES Remix and many upcoming games like Shovel Knight and NES Remix 2.

VC:
Super Mario World (classic)
Super Metroid (another classic)
Donkey Kong (got it for 30c, barely worth even that)

And I really should buy Earthbound at some point!

Hope this helps to choose some games :)

First-party:

Nintendo Land
DKC Tropical Freeze
Pikmin 3
Super Mario 3D World

Probably in that order. NSMBU if you loved or haven't played NSMBWii. (Not because it's bad, just because it's not that special and you'd have to buy it standalone.)

Third-party:

Nano Assault NEO (eShop)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut (only if you never played the original)
Darksiders II (again, only if you never played it)

Can't really strongly recommend anything else.

Other stuff that I enjoyed:

Lego City Undercover
Mass Effect 3 SE
The Wonderful 101 (like somebody else said, try the demo before you buy; be prepared to not have any idea what's going on, and give it a few tries and see if you can get the hang of it)

OP, buy this

Its cheap, the screen protector will spare your screen from unintentional scratches and you will LOVE the fat stylus :)

I already ordered the Hori one but the stylus looks handy, is it sold separately? I guess not?

Congrats, BraXzy! Enjoy it. I had thought you already had one. Should be neat to play Shovel Knight on there!

I've wanted one for a good while. It's funny because I double dipped on Shovel Knight during the Kickstarter for 3DS and PC but I think I'd rather have one of those on Wii U.. I doubt I can change the picks now though.

Smooth move OP. I have to admit I'm considering trading my 360 in for Wii U for my son (X1 owner already). I grew up on Mario, Zelda and DK. I'd like my son to have those sorts of experiences too. Any idea what EB games trade in a Slim 250Gb for these days?

I don't know what value trade-ins have in the US but here in the UK the main game shop only gives $80 for it so I doubt it'd be far from that? Might be worth holding onto. Titanfall could hold you out till Halo 5 comes out if you choose to trade it!

actually dreamt I bought a Wii last night, I was walking at the mall and they had this box. Wii U 94$ NEW!!. I bought it and it sat in my house unopened.

If you approach it for what it is - a Nintendo first party box - it's a fun little console with some enjoyable games. I have had tons of fun with New Super Mario Bros U and Pikmin 3.

I already have an Xbox One, and not to knock the Wii U but I doubt I'll buy any third party game on it besides Rayman which was made for it. I definitely picked it up with the intention of mainly going First Party because the quality of it is great.

I've not looked into Pikmin, I never played a previous one so I'll look to see what the fuss is about :)

Ahaha, I can actually say I just bought a WIii U too. In fact, it's out for delivery right now! :D

I was just in another thread talking about how I wanted a PS4, but I felt like it was just a 'hype' thing. Still on that edge tho. -__-||

Anyone who says Wii U has no games is either trolling or just doesn't like Nintendo games.

Yeah, it's funny all the hate Wii U gets when as it stands it's currently the cheapest next-gen system with the biggest and most worthwhile catalog. But hey, no accounting for taste, I suppose.

It hasn't enough pixels and no x86 so it obviously can't be a good system, because tech is everything didn't you hear.

I love my WiiU, and will ride it out till the bitter end. Too many great games on it already, and many to come.

Nobody says that. It's a fabrication formed in your mind through your own personal biases.

A new generation IS, however, normally marked by a big tech jump from what we experienced before. A lot of gamers also care about the tech side (that's NOT to say tech is all they care about), so it's important. The Wii U is not a noticable jump up from what we experienced last generation, so it's what knock against the system.

Not trying to bash, but can someone please explain why everyone is quick to recommend Wonderful101? Personally, I believe some other games are more of a must play, unique to Nintendo consoles.

I find it bizarre, too. It's a very niche game (and has the sales to back that up). I don't know why somebody would just blindly recommend it to ANYBODY when its appeal is so small. To the people that like it, they love it, but it doesn't have broad appeal like SM3DW and DKC:TF.

I don't wanna hijack the thread or anything... but to your point - I've seen people here on GAF say exactly that. "It's 8 year old hardware", "The games look the same as the Wii", etc. Which is also basically what you just said. Go back and look at comparison shots of Wind Waker to WWHD, or NSMBWii compared to NSMBU, it's a ridiculously noticeable jump in quality, not to mention incredible looking games like Pikmin 3, which, in my opinion, rivals anything on the other two new systems. Whether you're one of them, there are people who will are simply in denial about the high quality of Wii U graphics in spite of the tangible evidence thereof. It's strictly a mindset issue and it's a shame those people are missing out on fun experiences.

Good job OP. This has by far the best exclusive lineup of the three newer consoles so far, and that's the best reason to get a Nintendo console anyway. My suggestion is W101, SM3DW, and Pikmin 3

Get some of that MonHun3u
Git sum Wonderful 101

AW YEAH VIDEO GAMES

You already have zombiu which is fucking awesome! I really enjoyed that game a lot, the sheer amount of tension you get from playing it is insane, it's the best survival horror game made in the last 8 years by far.

Are you seriously trying to imply that the WiiU isn't being ridiculed and it's games trivialized by using these points? Come on now.

Of course my example was meant to ridicule these opinions.

Because if you go through the first phase of finding out what to do (and to be quite honest the game isn't even that convoluted, apart from having to learn how to control the mob instead of a single character), it is probably one of the most amazingly rewarding, fun and unique experiences ever to be made available in any game console since forever. It is not hard to understand why people would recommend something they love, even though the mainstream, instant reward gamer might turn it away at first.

Kamiya and Platinum Games know their stuff.

Find me one person that said Wii U can't be a good system because it's tech is years behind, or that tech is all that matters. Now, I also didn't remotely say "the games look as good as the Wii." I said that the visuals we have with Wii U are not unlike that which we got last gen (360 and PS3). Nintendo can use clever tricks and great art to make their games look good, but look at any multiplatform title and you'll find that, not only does the Wii U version not look as good as the 360/PS3 versions, but it often is the worst version! That's an issue.

About Pikmin 3, it has it's moments that look fantastic, but for the most part, during normal gameplay, I didn't find it to be that great looking (stopped playing it after a couple of hours but hoping to get back into it soon). It also doesn't help that it's 720p which doesn't look great on my TV.

Wii U is ridiculed because it's specs are many many years behind the competition. But that isn't all that matters, and it isn't all they care about. You sounded mad that people are insulting the Wii U, and tried to make those detractors look worse to take your anger out.

I say approach Wonderful 101 with caution. Play the demo, do your research. Find out what some people loved about it and what others didn't and make your own decision. I know there's a lot of passionate love for that game, and I was excited for it too before it came out. Then, I found it to be one of the most disappointing, frustrating, broken messes of a game I've ever played. I'm not saying to not buy it, I just recommend you to do your homework on that one.

If you want guaranteed home runs, I think Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is the best 2D platformer that Nintendo's made since the Super NES. Rayman Legends is another excellent 2D platformer, if you're into that genre. Besides that, I'd say Pikmin 3 and Super Mario 3D World are your other must-buys.

If you haven't played them yet on another system, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Batman: Arkham City are all great pickups.

Agree 100%. It's a very niche game, and has a bunch of passionate fans that over-recommend it as they want it to sell more so more similar games get made.

It's not my cup of tea at all. I don't like beat em ups or combo based action games at all, and I'm just not really into skill based games period aside from platformers.

I have the New Mario games, Mario 3D World, and Rayman Legends is in the mail. I was considering getting DK, but heard it was really hard and I mostly use the Wii U to play games with my kindergartner. If it's too hard, I was thinking about getting Windwaker because I've never played it.

Personally I'd advise against W101. It's not that it's a bad game, but it's a very peculiar title that most people will find to be utterly confusing or even too crazy.

From my point it's great moments come when you are interested in learning the combos, but given how hard the game is, I found it to give me little rewards outside of a few funny moments. Haven't brought myself to finish it, and I doubt I'll ever do.

The games I'd recommend are:

Zombi U
Deus Ex HR
Nintendoland
Wii Party U
Rayman Legends
Donkey Kong Country TF
Wii Sports Club
Trine2
Nano Assault Neo
Little Inferno

Maybe you should follow your own advice. Or perhaps you just have a funny definition of "broken".

The next time I get my ass kicked in MvC3, I'll make sure to use your excuse. Thanks!

Trine 2 from the eShop is well worth getting also Pikmin 3, DK-TF & Mario 3D, NFS-MWU is also pretty good.

W101 is good but the demo is quite different to the actual game, yes you MUST play the demo to see what you think of it, but the actual game does play a little differently.

Nothing about the game is broken, in fact it's the complete opposite, every element is finely crafted and tuned to perfection.
You just need practice.

I think it's much more useful to watch that youtube technique tutorials. Those at least motivated me to learn the games mechanics.

I know what you mean, when i played the demo i thought "this is great!" when the game arrived on day one i put the disc in my WiiU & something was different.

I'm not saying it's a bad game, far from it, it's a very good game, but it's one of those where the demo isn't entirely representative of the game.

Dude, there is absolutely nothing broken about that game. Rather, there is a steep learning curve, and a lot of depth. Of course, this fact makes the game all the more rewarding when you become adept with its systems and are able to master them.

The game is HARD, and if you don't have the patience for that then there won't be all that much there for you. I know why a lot of people didn't like the game when they tried to play it, but for those of us who like mastering complex gameplay systems, there's hardly anything better (basically just MonHun).

The only demo entirely representative - price included - of its game is Ground Zero. The 101 one is just a quick and partial look, not the whole thing.

Allow me to quote myself:

These are all serious contenders for my top 10 games of the year (and includes my current GotY):

New Super Mario Bros U / New Super Luigi U

Super Mario 3D World

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

Pikmin 3

The Wonderful 101

I recommend all of them. I'll give some tips on which to choose if you are not a rich fuck:

MH3U and TW101 both are demanding games that require patiently learning controls without much hand-holding from the game, but I think are the most satisfying in terms of combat design. MH3U is also an expansion of MH3 and the online is likely slowing down and that may be one its main appeal. TW101 has couch co-op challenges (unlike MH3, MH3U has no couch multiplayer).

Pikmin 3, if you are new to the series, is a twist to RTS and involves a lot of micromanagement and multi-tasking. Best played with wiimote+nunchuck with additional help with gamepad. With the right controls it is intuitive, but still has a learning curve. Probably the best couch multiplayer game on the Wii U. May seem too short/easy if you are not into extra challenges or don't push for decent performance in the campaign.

New Super Mario U and its expansion are probably some of the best 2D Mario ever (especially when taken together). If you like 2D Mario and are not burned on the "New" franchise, it is an easy buy.

Super Mario 3D World is the safest buy, disappointment with it is probably rare. Works really well as a couch multiplayer.

Also, Nintendoland is a fantastic game to bring out when company (especially game-naive kids) comes over (Pikmin and TW101 both are little advanced, though SM3DW probably works just as well).

I haven't played it, but Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze also looks pretty promising. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is also a great game, but I would only get that on the Wii U if you can't get it on PC. It is pretty feature complete, has a bigger roster, and looks amazing on PC.

EDIT: Splinter Cell: Blacklist is also another outstanding game, but again, I would get it on PC if you can, especially if you have any interest in doing the multiplayer stuff (though unlike S&ASRT I'm sure PS3/360 are as not much of a downgrade from PC and their multiplayer works better than Wii U's).

If you like these kind of games, the Wii U is definitely worthwhile.

Go into 3D World with low expectations.

Haha, your obsession with this game has consumed you completely. But, yeah, never hurts to go into a game with lowered expectations I suppose. At the time one should be able to admit when their own opinion is the great minority when giving advice to other people who may or may not feel the same way.

Funnily enough my Wii U purchase has pushed me to upgrade my TV bench or whatever you want to call it
KuGsj.gif

My current one is pretty crappy and I've been meaning to find a new one. I spotted a pretty good one at Ikea which looks kinda like this:

Only the doors aren't glass and there is only three of them. Oh and they leave the top hole open (with no back) so I can put my consoles in them. That way I can set up my Xbox One and Wii U as well as my 360 which I had to put in a cupboard.
