Screw it! I finally bought a Wii U

Finally found some time to set up my WiiU........

Currently charging my Gamepad, waiting to fire up the system. Would I just be able to turn it on and sync my Wiimote+ to get things started or do I need the Gamepad? I know I could use the Gamepad right now to get things going, but I'd rather charge it 100% first (unless that's not really important?)

So I've got....

MK8, Pikmin 3, NSMBU, Nintendoland

Nunchuk + wiimote for Pikmin 3, I know. Is the Wiimote+ necessary? I've just got one and am curious about multiplayer...
Wiimote for NSMBU? Same as NSMBWii, I'm guessing.
What about MK8? I heard the Gamepad isn't great for it...... but I'm not keep on plunking down $50 for a Pro Controller right now
Nunchuk + Wiimotes fine for Nintendoland?

Stoked!

As a new Wii U owner, I would just like to point out how fucking dumb it is I cant use the gamepad to play original Wii games. Just rebought Xenoblade (originally had an EU version) and now I need to set up a sensor, and also get a wii remote plus a controller. Fucking stupid.

At least you can play it...

Jumped back into Wii U tonight.

Snagged a Mario + Luigi U bundle and MK8.

Gonna get Pikmin 3 on the download promo for my wife, get WWHD for me, snag some VC stuff and I'll be set.

How good is Tropical Freeze?

Tropical Freeze is great and the soundtrack is godly. A must buy.

I don't know whether I should buy the Zelda bundle or wait to see if they make a Smash bundle. My backlog is already huge, and I don't know if I should add to it.

My waifu loves DKC (had all 3 on SNES before I met her) so that's already a buy I forgot to mention, lol

If you can find a MK8 bundle you could get Wind Waker free for registering the game on Club Nintendo. Comes with a controller too.

Is there an account system yet like xbox/playstation?

I know I'm going to be purchasing a lot of VC games If i ever bought a wii u, but I dont want them to be lost forever if my HDD stuffs up -.-

... you can redownload purchases if that's what you're asking. If your system craps out or whatever, Nintendo can transfer purchases over if you give them a call. Not the best solution, certainly, and it's certainly not as simple as XBL or PSN, but your purchases are tied to an account.

Yes there's an account system. If your HDD dies you can just re-download the games on another one.
But if your Wii U dies, you have to call Nintendo.
Accounts are bound to the console, although they did say they were going to change it one day.

edit: beaten

Help!

On another note, charging the Gamepad took almost 4 hours, not 2.5. And now this System Update is taking an eternity.

I miss the days when you could just plug the thing in, throw in a cartridge and start playing....

yes i realize why that is no longer an option

Welp, I might cave in and buy a wii-u. Are there any deals out there? I was thinking of going used.

Quoting a post of mine from another thread:

Refurb Wii U w/ Nintendo Land and 1 year warranty = 200
Refurb Wii remote + nunchuck w/ 90 day warranty = 20
Mario Kart 8 @ target with $15 off after a $1 pre-order = 46 (or 48 at walmart.com/amazon)
Wind Waker/Pikmin 3/NSMBU/Wii Party U = free

$266

Throw in Zombi U for $10 at best buy, and you have a system with 2 controllers and 4 games for $276 plus tax and $5 total shipping for the console and wiimote.

Well as someone who bought the system day 1, the updates are WELL worth it.

Should be $100 cheaper and include a pro controller

I'm very impressed by this 5.0 update. Much quicker between menus and I love the quick launch option.
Miiverse booting still a little slow but everything is generally miles better then we had it at launch.

Indeed. I love just being able to boot up to the internet browser to watch youtube on my tv or just on the gamepad. Which should be the ONLY way to watch youtube on the Wii U. The app is just horrible.

Gamepad is great for NSMBU and MK8. Basically when you hear people say "omg pro controller so goood" gamepad is basically the same thing but with a screen on it.
Nunchuck+wiimotes are genrally the default option for multiplayer. Motionplus isn't required for Pikmin 3 iirc but is for some parts of nintendo land.

You don't need the gamepad to be fully charged at all. You do need the gamepad to set up the system though. Synching it is one of the first things you do.

Wiimote+ is not necessary for Pikmin 3 but it's the best way to play it (while simultaneously using a gamepad). You can play it with Gamecube-style controls just using the Gamepad also, but it doesn't work quite as well.

I'm pretty sure that all controllers that work on Wii U work for NSMBU. Gamepad, Wiimote, Wii Classic Controller, or Wii U Pro controller.

Gamepad works for MK8, you don't need a Pro. Keep in mind that Pro Controllers literally have the exact same buttons in the exact same positions as the Gamepad. The big differences are feel (it's smaller and slightly more comfortable) and battery life (it lasts months).

All games in Nintendoland are playable with a Wiimote + Nunchuk and the Gamepad. Most games don't even need a Wiimote + Nunchuk, but a few do.

You're right. They should have just programmed those games to support the GamePad when they came out 7 years ago.

You do realize it's the games that have to support different types of controllers, not just the hardware/OS?

All new Wii U owners should give Lego City Undercover a try. Pure fun. Was nothing like past Lego games I played.

I made the misstake to play lego city U as my first lego game. I cant stand the other lego games after that. It sucks since my son loooooves every lego game and wants to coop :p

I picked up my Wii U today, because i have too much money and too little impulse control.

Got Pikmin, Mario Kart 8, Wind Waker HD and Nintendoland + Premium for maybe $450AUD, so not too bad.

Been playing Mario kart a lot of the afternoon, pretty fun, but the menus are kinda...iffy.

I never really had a Wii, so I look forward to catching up on some games I missed (Especially Radiant Dawn)

...Once I actually get a Wiimote XD

Setting up my WiiU still and it's prompting me to link my 3DS NNID to the WiiU (since I do want to have the accounts combined). But I don't actually have my 3DS on me. Does this mean I have to either wait until I get my 3DS back or set up my WiiU with a new NNID so that it will never be able to merge with my 3DS account?

If so, that's pretty stupid.

I don't believe you need to physically have your 3DS on you. You just need to use your login credentials. Not positive though since I made my own NNID on Wii U and then linked the 3DS to it once it became available as an option to do so. That said, when I did it...that's how it worked. I just had to login with my Wii U NNID and Password on my 3DS...don't know why it wouldn't work the same in reverse.

Alright, sounds good.

I guess I should buy a Pro controller for MK8 local multiplayer... otherwise 'Player 2' is stuck with a wiimote+nunchuk and that doesn't sound like a great option.

Wiimote+ and a Gamepad at the same time, eh? Looking forward to seeing how that works

That's the problem. The NNID is like 15 digits long and I don't have it recorded anywhere (apart from on my 3DS). So I think if I create a new NNID, I'll have one for each console and they won't be able to be synced.

Oh well.

I got a question, what exactly is included in New Super Luigi? Is it just the same single player from NSMBU but with harder levels that are slightly remixed?

I am buying a Wii U with 2 games, and one them has to be 3D World, so i am trying to find out if i should go for the Wii U + New Super Mario + New Super Luigi or the MK8 pack, or just buy Tropical Freeze, which i also want

It works pretty well actually. You use the Wiimote+ and Nunchuk for primary controls and the Gamepad for overviewing the map and directing the Captains you aren't controlling, and monitoring them. I recommend setting up the Gamepad either on the stand in front of you or on your lap. I think Monster Hunter 3U also uses a Pro Controller + Gamepad control setup. The idea of using the Gamepad as a secondary interface while primarily using a different controller is definitely something that should be explored more.

Oh well.

My NNID is only like 6 characters long. Are you sure you aren't confusing it with your 3DS friend code? (Unless you intentionally created a 15 character long NNID you don't remember???)

Anyways, yes, if you use a different NNID on Wii U from 3DS you can't sync the accounts...because you aren't using the same account.

In my opinion go with Tropical Freeze. You don't really want Mario overload, do you?

They are not "slightly remixed". They're new, shorter and harder levels using the same world map and themes.

I said 15 because when the WiiU asks me to enter my NNID there are 15 spaces (or thereabouts). But maybe it allows up to 15.... or something.

I get that. My objection is more toward the fact that you can't afterwards change the NNID that is attached to a system. Or maybe you can. But the instructions certainly imply that you can't.

I just don't remember it. I registered it and haven't really used my 3DS since. And if I do remember it, I don't remember my password. Either way the info I've tried has been incorrect, but Nintendo doesn't specify which part is incorrect.

Apologies for the incredibly tedious conversation

Is there really no way to completely turn off the Game Pad? This thing's battery drains pretty fast even with the screen off, and I don't want to charge it repeatedly just to be able to play MK8 with a Wii Remote and Nunchuck... I read about going out of range or something, but that's not an option in my Parisian apartment. Is it such an integral part of the Wii U? I thought it had no processing or communications functions, which explains why it's so light...

Try and log into Miiverse. It will let you go through the normal forgot my username or forgot my password deal.

Your NNID can be up to 16 characters I believe. It is basically your username, it should not just be a string of numbers. Keep in mind, if you haven't used your 3DS to go online since December then it will not have a NNID as that is when they were added to the system. You -can- unlink a NNID from a 3DS and attach it to a new one, but you need to have the system to do that (or call Nintendo in event of a theft). If you've created a NNID on 3DS all of your digital purchases are attached to that account. If you do not yet have a NNID on 3DS you can make one on Wii U, and then later associate the 3DS with your Wii U NNID, which would then tie your purchases and wallet to the NNID.

If you go to the eShop on your 3DS it displays your NNID when you enter it.

You can also retrieve your NNID if you remember the e-mail you registered with via here:

There is no way to completely turn off the Gamepad while the system is on. You can turn off the screen display in settings though. The Pad is designed to be always on. You can leave it charging 24/7 if you want, it is a myth that it will hurt the battery somehow. The charging cradle is designed for this very reason. You are supposed to drop it there when you aren't using the system so it's always ready when you want to play next.

The cradle/stand is really handy for charging.

More obstacles came up when I tried those options.

Anyhow I somehow got through without creating/linking a NNID. I'll try tomorrow once I get my hands on my 3DS.

Thanks for helping

To those here, I believe Pikmin 3 had an update that allows you to play with a stylus on the GamePad. I haven't tried it myself, but it seems folks like it. At the very least it sounds better than using the GC style controls on the GamePad. I still think the Wiimote & Nunchuck + GamePad for the map is still probably the best option though.

i just got a wii u and have a few questions.

-if I transfer my stuff from my wii to the wiiU does it wipe everything from the original system? What about my save files for disc games do those get wiped or cloned?

-is it possible to control my wii purchased snes games with the wiiU pad? I always used gamecube controllers and since wiiU doesn't have those ports...

-how durable is the screen on the game pad? is it like the DS screens where you get swirls and micro scratches pretty fast?

If you perform the Wii > Wii U transfer EVERYTHING goes. That means all VC/WiiWare purchases and your purchase history AND all of your game saves. That includes saves for disc games, yes. Once the transfer is complete all of that will be on the Wii U and will NOT be on the Wii any longer.

Currently games in Wii mode can be played on the Gamepad screen, but not using the Gamepad buttons. What that means is that you can use the Gamepad as a screen, but you still need a separate controller to actually control a game. When you go to Wii Mode the Wii U essentially becomes a Wii. No Wii U only controllers work on it. That means no input via the Gamepad and no Wii U Pro controllers. If you were using a Gamecube controller before that means you will now need a Wii Classic Controller OR you can pay the $1 upgrade charge to transfer your Wii game from the "Wii Mode" to your Wii U proper (provided it is available in the Wii U eShop). However, Nintendo did just announced a Gamecube controller adapter for the system, so it is possible Gamecube controllers will still be usable via these on Wii mode once they release...but that is not yet confirmed.

I personally find the Gamepad screen very durable, much moreso than the DS or 3DS touch screens.

thanks. that kinda sucks about the virtual console controls. are all wii vc games available for the wiiu $1 upgrade? my main concern is actraiser.

Just a reminder (at least to PAL Gaffers). Brain Training is free on eShop (at least Wii U) until early July or something so go pick it up while it's hot!

The game has to be on the Wii U eShop to be eligible for the upgrade. As long as it is on the eShop, you can perform the upgrade to a game you own via Wii Mode.

This is the current list of Virtual Console games on the eShop:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Virtual_Console_games_for_Wii_U_(North_America)

Unfortunately, Actraiser is not yet on there. They are constantly adding more games though, so it's hard to know when it would show up.

Are the power supplies (main and the gamepad charger) that come with the NA version of the WiiU are universal (100-240V) or US only (110V)?

Yes, the power supply that come with NA wiiU is universal 110-240v

I bought Mario Kart 8 and I'm hesitating between Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101.

Both are games I'd rather have on physical format but they're the only ones I'm interested in / don't already have.

I played the W101 demo and it didn't convince me, but demos aren't necessarily repressentative of the final game's quality.
I never played Pikmin but I've rarely been disappointed by a Nintendo game.

Decisions, decisions. What should I get ?

Can you upgrade the amount of storage your Wii U has? There only seems to be 8GB and 32GB versions, doesn't sound very much if you buy digital.

Wonderful 101 is better and longer. The demo is not representative of the full game.

Pikmin 3 is still good too.

You can use external Hard Drives on Wii U.
