Sega was amazing at naming consoles

Weird how you insist that "Sega CD" is somehow confusing, yet cite 3DS positively. The 3DS actually had a similar problem as the Wii U, where consumers couldn't always differentiate it from its predecessors. ("What's the difference between DS, DS Lite, DSi, 2DS, and 3DS?" "Can they play the same games?" etc.)

This is true. I admit the 3DS is a confusing name, but it does spell out the features. 3D. Dual Screens. 3DS. I don't know what else you'd call it. You could blame marketing and hardware designers for not differentiating it more from the DS.

It's still a better name than the Wii U.

Skipping school?
More along the line of "not good/idiot"

"Fare sega" is used for skipping school, but that probably change between different regions.
Being not good is either "sega" or "mezza sega", I've heard the second more often here.

Nintendo surprisingly has had a history of very good console names in comparison:

I don't think I could disagree more tbh. Nothing shouted " I NEED TO GET THIS" about the name Nintendo Entertainment System... hell, nobody would even call it that back then, it was just a Nintendo, because the full name sucked and was too much effort to even say.

Gameboy, DS and Gamecube were good. Super Nintendo (or SNES for a similar reason to the NES above), Nintendo 64, Gameboy XX (whichever subsequent model), all other DSes etc were horribly boring names that pretty much just read like Console Version 6.

Dreamcast is actually a very cool name , its actually a more Modern and mature name given at the time everyone was trying to make really "cool" like "x" box with its giant X on the system.

And yet all those consoles were outsold by the ones with less appealing names.

Lawl the insecurities..... Is sales figures the official Dick measuring rule of consoles/games these days.

You can't go for 1 page without someone bringing up sales.

They also had Game Gear and Nomad.

To me the Sega 'Nomad' was such a perfect name for a portable handheld system. Even with the way it would burn through batteries and how it had that not-so-great display it was pretty incredible to have my Genesis games on the go. Good times!

The name itself is cool, Dreamcast = broadcasting dreams. The imagery behind it was pretty good.

Someone needs to buy that name from Sega and reuse it.

lol wait, that's supposed to justify it? That's terrible! Like, it actually makes me laugh at how tacky that is.

"Wii" is not a bad name, but it ran against what people expected at the time; the entire Wii ran against what people expected at the time.

Just like the console itself, it turned out to make perfect sense.
And I forgot the Gameboy. Great name, too, same for the DS, but having multiple versions of the same closed proprietary hardware makes naming a tricky thing.

But Nintendo is generally good at naming it's add-ons and upgrades which are not, in any way, their own thing. Just look at the Wii U and how nobody would confuse that with a completely new console.

Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast are probably my favorite console names, and I only ever owned that last one. I liked that SEGA didn't follow a stereotypical "techy" electronics naming scheme with them.

Dreamcast had not just an awesome name, but also an awesome logo and general aesthetic. I miss the wide variety of colors they came in. :( The see-through ones were the best.

Agreed. "Dreamcast" is a pretty awesome name for a console.

From other manufacturers, I like "Xbox" personally. It has flair and it matched the console box too. However pairing it together like "Xbox One" sounds god awful.

"Gamecube" is cool too. Very distinct.

Even though I owned a Genesis and a 32x, I wanted to own a "Neptune" pretty bad.
Neptune was a pretty awesome name to me when I was 13 and it's still cool to me now.

I'm not crazy about Master System or SG-1000 or Sega CD or 32X or Game Gear.

The rest (afaik) had great names though. Genesis and Saturn are great. Nomad and Dreamcast are perfect. Pico is even a pretty good name I guess.

Couldn't agree more, the naming, logo and aesthetics of their systems were always spot on. I also loved the period where they were internally (and externally with Saturn) naming systems after planets, particularly Sega Mars (32X) and the ill-fated Sega Neptune.

PC Engine. X68000. Doesn't get any cooler than that. Master System, Mega Drive and Mark III are all pretty damn close, though.

Barring the Master System, which rubs me the wrong way for reasons I can't really articulate, I agree with you OP. Dreamcast is such a smooth sounding name. And their prior stuff (Genesis/Mega Drive and the like) was all endearingly rad.

While we're on the subject, I went from disliking the name Gamecube to loving it. It literally is what it is. It's a cube that plays games.

You would think I'd like Playstation for the same reason, but nope it sounds too much like workstation to me. Not really sexy.

As for Xbox, I think I laughed out loud the first time it was revealed because MS was trying so hard to be edgy with its branding. Although now that I think about it, I kind of like the sound of it. Xbox. Hm. Maybe this is a Gamecube situation all over again...

Well it's certainly better than their original name, "Service Games".

Dear god how did I never hear about this? I always thought it was a random japanese word. Mind blown.

Dreamcast is still the best name for a console yet, for my money. Perfect.

Yep. One of the best console names (if not the best) of all time.

Even the one time Sega used terminology related to gaming they did it better than Nintendo and Sony "Game Gear" vs "GameCube"

Come to think of it, Sony and Nintendo are TERRIBLE at naming consoles.

Love Sega console names, Genesis/Dreamcast/Saturn/Mega Drive all sounded so badass. "Revelation" would be the perfect name for a SEGA comeback console.
