Shawn Elliott Leaves 1UP, Joins Game Development

What's "Gaming Age?"

The progenitor of NeoGAF. I wouldn't give a history lesson (because that'd be boring as hell), but Gaming Age was a gaming site that had a forum (GAF). GAF eventually became separate entirely from Gaming Age.

Check his join date, dood. ;)

Shawn Elliot was one of the most funny, thoughtful, and insightful writers that 1Up had. More than that, I think he was somewhat of an inspiration to all of us post-college ne'er-do-wells. He worked at some shitty grocery store even with a Bachelor's Degree and went on to a job most gamers can only dream of. For those listeners with liberal arts degrees slumming in restaurant/service industry jobs, he showed us all that our hopes and aspirations might still eventually be fulfilled.

He will be missed. Badly.

"So first thing, I have to apologize...I posted a blog today....and I probably shouldn't have. It said I was leaving.... and I'm not, that was just more a dumb joke that wasn't really funny to anyone but myself. I've cried wolf so many times now that I understand if people can't forgive me...."

WTF? I'm assuming that later in the show he confirms that it's real or something. Otherwise this is a pretty nasty and selfish prank.

people who r getting GFW 9-17 on Itunes:
its not appearing on my subscription, but when I searched the store for GFW its in there

And 1upFM is the new future hope. Go Kids Table!

Jeff Green's approval fuels us.

On topic: I said it about Jeff in my 1UP blog last week, and I'll repeat it about Shawn now: I'm going to miss the fuck out of him around the office. If Jeff was the first person in this industry that I looked up to, Shawn was easily the second. Every time I listened to a new episode of GFW Radio (and I listened to *all of them*), I found myself alternating between louder-than-necessary laughter that would get me "WTF" glares from my girlfriend and long, thoughtful pauses to consider some of the subjects Shawn brought to light. And within weeks of arriving at 1UP for my job, Shawn quickly became someone I knew I could talk to about stuff, someone who would always tell me the truth about how things operated and who would also hold me and anyone else accountable for doing the right thing.

As far as videogames and games journalism are concerned, no one has ever made me think more than Shawn, and even though he won't be a weekly fixture on my iTunes/daily presence in the office, I hope I never lose that.

Thanks yeah -- 2K Boston affiliation confirmed in the podcast.

It's a shame there's no video for this.

Shawn and Robert -- I think I read your Best Buy games catalog :)

wasnt going to post shawn ruminations because of the drama in this thread but to you and jeff both, thank you so much. From a listener's perspective, every time I listened to the 5 of you talk, it really was clear that you gave every ounce of credit to your listeners, and in return I believe you have a very many people's respect, including mine. I really dont look at the world quite the same way after hearing the way that you see it.

congrats on the new position.

We all love you FartOfWar and wish you the best of luck.

And this is coming from a console fanboy - But either way, you had a knack for sizing things up, asking the right questions, and injecting your own opinions with style and grace.

Here's hoping somebody listens.

Where's Ryans kick ass job?

awwwww bless, I hope he's ok, it's a real bummer when work collogues that have become good friends move onto new jobs, especially when that friendship has been forged over so many years, I remember when a good friend of mine that I worked with for over 10 years in the same company moved onto a better job, I was ultimately happy for him but very sad at the same time, you get over it but it's a real bummer, and sometimes wakeup a call.

No more Brodeos makes me feel sad but that knowing that they both moved into Associate Producer roles at AAA studios makes me feel better.

Someone needs to get onto compiling the "best of" Brodeos. I know there's already 2 good ones, but now they need to finish the series!

The Brodeo was something that I was always, ALWAYS excited for when I downloaded it. It's sad to have seen Jeff and Shawn leave within a week of each other, both guys really made you think. Hopefully the GFW tradition can be continued somehow via podcast.

Good luck to Shawn. Curious to see what it is he is leaving for. As in "what game".

1UP is one of the few publications, online or otherwise, where I have naturally "gotten to know" the people. I hope to see even more excellent individuals appear in one form or another up at 1UP. Can't think of any other places than 1UP where so many people of retarded greatness appear.

And Shawn: Send me a message about what you are working on now. Wont tell, I promise. :lol

This was inevitable. Good luck Shawn.

Third post in and it sums it up perfectly.

I just couldn't see Shawn staying with a Jeff Green-less GFW.

A shame but I suspect this will be something we'll see more of in the next year or so.

All the best for the future and hopefully we'll still hear from him from time to time.

Kudos Shawn.

Godspeed Shawn, don't be a stranger, but with that big mouth of yours not even a contract would stop you from viraling your game ;) (Or Bish if he still functions..)

Now someone snatch up Ryan ffs!

Damn this was true? Good luck with the move Shawn. 2K Boston are a great developer. You will be missed. Any chance of you doing a podcast with Ken Levine?

Thanks man. Sorry for just hopping in here out of nowhere -- I don't get to post that much anymore, unfortunately, just because work keeps me so damn busy. But I love this place. Just like I love 1UP. And it pisses me off to hop on here tonight and seeing people making uninformed comments like that. Yeah, yeah, I should know better -- this is what message boards are all about. But I expect better from this one.

Shawn has an awesome opportunity -- one that he'd be stupid to turn down. Period. All these other comments are just disrespectful to the other people at 1UP. And I see a lot of potential Shawn Elliotts in training -- it'd be a shame for them to get discouraged now.

I definitely understood your post, and I think it's a great opportunity for Jeff and Shawn to move on to great careers. Who can blame them when they're given that kind of opportunity. And obviously the ones that went before like Bryan, Luke, Crispin, etc. They all seemed to enjoy their time at 1UP and made a career change. Good for them.

I think it just says something about the talent that you guys get at 1UP and how fun your podcasts are that people get so upset if people leave. But yeah, there are some new up and comers that are pretty entertaining (Nick Suttner being one). Now if or when Shane or Garnett leave that will really mark the end of an era for me.
